GREAT BRITAIN: "It's a bit of a mystery!" Keir Starmer? What an expert is now puzzling over
The newly appointed British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced the immediate renewal of the country following the election victory of his Labour Party. "The work of change begins immediately," said Starmer in front of his new official residence at 10 Downing Street in London on Friday. The Labour leader, whose party won a historic victory in the parliamentary elections on Thursday, vowed to "rebuild" Britain in his first speech as head of government.
Shortly before, head of state King Charles III had appointed 61-year-old Starmer as the new Prime Minister and tasked him with forming a government. Before that, Charles had accepted the resignation of the previous Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak of the conservative Tories.
Labour won 412 seats in the election, significantly more than the 326 seats needed for an absolute majority in the House of Commons. The governing Tories only won 121 seats, the worst result in their history. Sunak announced his resignation as party leader.
