- I've always known car parts in New Zealand are expensive. It wasn't until I picked up a cheap Alfa Romeo that I found out just how silly some of these prices are.
In this video I compare what I paid for service parts from DIY Car Service Parts to what was available locally from Repco.
I don't mind paying slightly more for the convenience of buying locally but as you'll see from the comparison I'm happy to wait!
some of the prices shown changed by a few cents due to exchange rate stuff. They all seemed to be even cheaper than I paid!

Gotta love NZ prices!!! I serviced my X5 recently, $310 for a Ryco cabin filter, ended up going to the main dealer and paying $100 for a genuine BMW one. Normally import parts for the most part

Holy cow, that‘s expensive! I also heard that the rent for houses or apartments in NZ is also extremly expensive. So, the avarage salary must be quite high in New Zealand compared to the rest of the world, otherwise noone could affort a home or a car… Are tools also that expensive? Would be interesting to know the prices for tools of known brands from europe or the US in NZ.
Thanks for the inside, it‘s always interesting to know how things are handled in other areas of the world. That‘s one reason why I like watching videos from the US, NZ, AUS or other english speaking countries.

There is a bit of a housing price surge at the moment which is making it expensive to buy property and pushing rental prices up. Average NZ earnings aren't very high either. We're a small country a long way from anywhere.
You can get decent tools at reasonable prices. Not sure if any of the brands are available elsewhere, but ToolPro from Supercheap Auto works well for me.
I love watching videos from around the world for the same reason. Cheers

Just watched your parts price video & I agree. I bought the timing belt kit for doing my Alfa 156 from AliExpress for $53 to my home v $250 on “special” in NZ! Definitely getting ripped off!!

Based in Australia, I buy most of my parts from RockAuto in the USA. I would love to spend my money locally, but for God's sake, I do not want to pay triple and sometimes quadruple the price.
You have to figure on paying a few times what it's worth if you buy locally. No reason for it apart from greed

That is beyond ripoff, It's more like borderline criminal. You should order up and start selling, you could triple your money and still be the cheapest around.

Tell me about it! I get most of my stuff from either UK or US too. Never come across DIY Car Service Parts. Just took a look but seems you need to know the part numbers first, so a bit of work to cross reference what you need. Worth the effort though!
Even BNT aren't competitive
They do have a parts finder but it disappears when you change the currency from GBP 🤷♂️ I just find the parts then change to NZD
Must be me, but how do you put in your vehicle on the website? Before I could fill it in the selection box dissapeared. Also great video, didn't realize we were being taken for such a ride.

I've used them for years as The Green Spark Plug Co. They've expanded to do the whole service parts thing. Great service and range, definitely check them out

I have just serviced my car, total cost of air filter, oil filter, 5 litres of mid range oil, four NGK spark plugs & a new cambelt cost me £56.78 UK pounds, if I ordered them from New Zealand, they would have cost more than I could sell the car for!

How do the local parts stores survive at them prices . I ordered a case of 12 AC Delco oil filters for my truck , total landing cost from the USA at Rock Auto $73 At my local GM dealer $137 , exact same filters . Just does not make business sense when we all have access to the internet For me it's Rock Auto and Amazon. .
Trade pricing is a bit better but I don't know why people have put up with it for so long. Rockauto shipping gets here quicker than I can get stuff down from the North Island.
Amazon don't really exist here yet and I'm not sure what I feel about supporting the Bezos empire 🤣
I'm wondering the same thing Steve, they can't be selling too many parts at those prices... how can they afford to keep that business running? It's crazy. I seriously thought this video would be more like the store wants $8 for this filter and I was able to get it for $5 ...man was I wrong !

Wow, I'm in England and i thought i was getting ripped off, I have noticed prices here jumping up in the past 12 months, but they have to go a long long way before they get to your levels. Thank god for the good old t'internet eh, I will go have a look at your "go to DIY" website.

Holly crap Jonathon. My local parts store knows they have to compete with the internet. I can do okay on some parts but I recently had to buy a new axle for the Jeep Cherokee and they wanted $100 more than what I could get from Rock-auto. It definitely pays to shop around. It's good to see you post. Even ol' Thomas made a short video.

It's disgusting. I bought Italian (oem brembo) front discs and pads for my German car (Audi RS4) from California (eBay) for HALF THE NZ PRICE LANDED. Same part. It's disgusting. A few weeks ago I bought an off-brand Z06 LS7 throttle body for NZ$285 landed to replace my oem Audi one (bolt straight on, who knew?) and needed a throttle body gasket. NZ dealer said "they're backordered, 3 weeks, ex Singapore, already en-route". So I ordered one, and a week later added a genuine Audi gasket to the JHM order I had to place for the stupid papier mache (typical Audi) cooling pipe that fell apart when I looked at it. Didn't even ask Audi for a price, JHM make their own so you don't have to buy it with hoses on it! I also got an oem manufacturer air filter and oil filter and three sump plug gaskets in the same JHM ex-USA order and it not only arrived in exactly six days from ordering, but the whole order was NZ$160 LANDED, over a week before the NZ gasket arrived. That's the same as the NZ$129 + GST I paid for my last oem oil filter from NZ and it INCLUDED one. Worse still, Armstrongs in Wellington closed their service department weekends so now I'm just going to buy everything from America and have it waiting for me when I get home. IT'S A GERMAN CAR. WHY IS BUYING AND SHIPPING FROM AMERICA CHEAPER? :(

I went to repco last week and they sold me the wrong wheel bearing and u joint for a hilux after i gave them my rego number. So the mechanic pulled my axel out then the drive shaft out and got left with a huge bill from the mechanic cause he had to put it back together so could go back to repco and swap the parts and when I went back in they told me (people make mistakes) the chap at repco gave me 4wd products when mines a 2wd. This one mistake cost me double then what it should have. About $650. Absolutely clueless the people that work there.
With those prices (NZ) No wonder people don't change/replace all serviceable parts when due. It's going to be a case of Oil & Filter

were doing ok. but at those typical prices for servicing a car. I can't wait to win the Lottery 🤣🤣🤣

A lot of controversy about electric vehicles here, they've introduced a tax on vehicles used by farmers and builders so they offer discounts on Teslas etc for the wealthy folk 🤷♂️

That's crazy! There has to be a glitch in the matrix! I can't imagine they're selling any parts at that price... if they're not making money how could they even compete?

Prices are on the up here too with the worldwide lack of of supply. Doesn't tend to affect my end of the market 🤣

It's a shocker mate. Same for most parts. If it's a vehicle sold in the US you can get fantastic deals from Rockauto. Their shipping is crazy fast and cheap.
Can't get parts for older vehicles locally here in NZ, not sure its because of the big 'C' problem or what. I can understand a business re-strategizing its stocks to keep them flowing but does it hurt to keep just a few of everything, maybe 3, 5, 7 of the old parts on the shelves to keep those old vehicles running. Yeah, for me too its on line buys from overseas. Cheers!

Dread to think what a main dealer service would cost in NZ if the parts for diy are so expensive. Will never complain about the cost of parts here in the Uk
Again. Have you tried sourcing from the US? They always seem to have really cheap part prices, and good availability even for imported cars from Europe.
That little Holden Barina cost $700 for a basic service recently. So about £350 for an oil change from the main dealer.
I buy plenty from Rockauto. Works great if the car was released in the US like Audis etc, not so good for the Alfa
I just don't get it - NZ is probably 7 days by container ship from one of the worlds main automotive manufacturing regions. Should be dirt cheap to get parts. Instead you have to air freight them from England when a lot of the parts probably came here on the boat from Asia. 🤦♂️
Even from somewhere shitty like euro car parts I can get oil filters for £4 each and £5 a spark plug at sale.
Our parts are well travelled by the time they've gone from Asia to Europe and back to NZ. It has never made sense to me!
Bit misleading. Alpha Romeo is classed as an exotic. Price Holden ford or hap and the price levels out.
Not really, pretty standard. $45 for an oil filter for the Wife's Hyundai and same for my Golf. My little Audi they want $65 for the filter and that's a super common one that fits most of the range. All of these are $10 or less from a normal parts place 🤷♂️
Oil filter and six plugs for my vy holden was 140 for the plugs and 75 for the filter oil was 129 on special same with my ford one iridium spark plug was 120 and a single coil pack was 125.bought the plugs and coil packs from Ford Australia and was half the price!
Wow that's not too flash. I found that the Ford dealer was half the price for the oil filter on the Kuga I look after.
I service my Mondeo every year myself for about £70 with good quality oil and filter’s at NZ prices It would be unaffordable who’s paying those prices
I did the same with my Mondeo. Filters from the UK and Ford spec oil from the Morris oil distributor that happens to be in the next town over.

When you buy an Australian product you are not paying for the product alone you are contributing in the highest staff coast in the world coz any Australian staff coast more than 3 times an American or English staff it’s the same with the prices of computers and tv and everything that needs staff even the meat products Australian meat over seas are cheaper than in Australia coz the store staff salary are high and it takes more people to do the same job in Australia
You need to start a parts importing company .
I tried importing a few bits but didn't really sell any. People were suspicious that they were too cheap 🤷♂️

I'm in Canada and it's usually cheaper for me to order parts from rockauto in the US even when you figure duty and what not. Nothing like your comparison.
What would a jug of synthetic oil run in your part of the world? I get name brand synthetic for about $25 for 5 litres when it's on sale
Castrol Edge 5W40 is on special at the moment for $65 for 5 litres.
@@Badgertronix bit pricey. Around here a lot of people change their oil every 5k km even with synthetic,even if the service manual says 10k or something.

Incredible!!! What is the average salary for working man in N.Z.??? Here in Canada average worker $20---$25 dollars Canadian per hr.and your barely scraping by.In average household man and wife both work.I am fortunate to be retired.$64.00 for oil filter is hopeless!Guess we cant complain too much here.Good that you can shop on internet. $20 an hour is our new minimum wage, so probably similar incomes to Canada. If I couldn't buy online for cheap I'd probably skip oil changes too! Cheers

Could be worse - you could live in Brexit Britain. Britain is gradually using its stock of classic car parts, and getting stuff from the EU now takes weeks after Brexit. Before, it was 3 - 5 days. Now, stuff sits at customs for weeks. And that's before import checks are implemented in the UK.

@@Badgertronix they will - the UK is looking to join the TPP, which is bonkers and pointless but will help keep things moving.
About those sparkplugs, the Densos' are good, but you can also get Marelli plugs on line which would be so original to the Alfa Romeo. I saw the Marelli website about a year ago and they have a wide range to cover almost all vehicles.
