How to make an eye splice in a double braided polyester rope ?
A core-dependent rope (polyester of nylon core) takes approximately 30% of its breaking strength out of its cover. You need an eye splice of core and cover to keep maximum pulling force.

I used to do this in the Navy for the ships I was stationed on. Only I would have been doing this splice on 6 inch nylon mooring lines.
Also, I am realizing that I need to mount a cleat somewhere in my kitchen. Didn't realize that I didn't have one. The comment about needing a secure source to pull on is quite valid. Thanks again!
Excellent. I was able to succeed on the 2nd attempt. Once I got to the final step of pulling on the eyelet I didn't realize how much tension was needed. Once I increased the pull with the left hand while secured to a vise on work table, was able to milk the outer core and see it ingress into the stem of the wrap. Amazing to see it move. The entire piece is super tight and solid. Thanks for the demo. Oh, and thanks for not putting music in it. That would have driven me to drink. Awesome video.
I don't understand, how can it be solid ? Why does it not undo itself when you pull a heavy charge on the eye ?

Very clear and a very neat result. I see eyes like this in climbing lanyards on which a climber will be resting his weight. Can you tell me if such eyes can be made in climbing rope by the amateur and trusted? I would say that they are only for semi static loading in such cases, not dynamic loading, for instance in the case of a fall.

Not one of the hundreds of videos about these splices actually explains HOW to pass the core and fid effectively through the rope. It is absolutely near impossible I have tried so many times.
Hi Colin, I understand your fustration. In case ropes are too tightly braided by the manufacturer splicing is not possible or requires special tools like a softfid (www.premiumropes.com/softfid) for pasing the core beyond the other core. Excellent video. Thank you. The only thing I would add is a note about where exactly the core is inserted back into the cover. There is no mark where that is done. It looks as though it's very very close to where the cover inserts into the core, but it would be helpful if that was stated clearly. Just a thought. Thanks again.
The core goes back on the transition point
done first go - 8mm double braid using 5mm aluminium knitting needle cut to roughly 20cm length, even put a swivel hook on the end. Awesome easy to follow vid cheers

Okay, but not tapering the core resulted in a bump, which could cause problems when running through a sheave. You should determine where the core will be buried in the splice and cut alternating pairs of stands of the cover so there is a nice transition from normal line diameter to the thicker spliced area.
In what possible application are you going to be running this type of eye splice through a sheave? This isn't a reeving splice.
Speakssoftly is correct….core should be tapered. When a halyard is run up the mast the splice is often times close enough and sometimes does enter a block or masthead sheave.

The double braided climbing line I have seems to have a weave that is far too tight for this type of splicing as I find separating the fibers to get at the inner cord much too difficult to accomplish.
Yes, for climbing there can be different techniques and not all ropes can be spliced

What size Fid should i use for a 1" rope?
I'm not sure everyone is going to be able to easily pull that much slack of the core through. I guess it's fine for short ropes.

The balans of the construction is different. This construction of polyester ropes(in general) is 50% core and 50% cover. The material has the same strength. The ropes are spliced accordingly. You need the cover to be part of the strenght. Ropes with a Dyneema core are different in balans and the core is much stronger. That's why the splices are different.

We use the Selma fits. The size(length) of these fits are related to the diameter of the rope and length of the splice. The sizes vary from 11,5cm to 28,5cm. Splices will be strong enough when using the Selma fids and related sizes.
I have a halyard line, good for rope clutches - simply neasrly impossible to pass the core back - and then once you've done that, there is absolutely NO WAY the cover within the core is goping to slit past it to complete the splice. NO WAY. Three attempts. Even used a hammer on the fid to get it through. Is there another video ? You know, the real life video on tighter weave rope..
Hi, the technique is the same for tighter braided ropes. But not all ropes can be spliced. For some it's even impossible. The same applies for used ropes.

I certainly wouldn't trust this to use to pull anything. The only strength in the rope now is the outer jacket.

It seems like a really short distance is spliced, wouldn’t a longer fid provide a longer and safer splice?
There is a ratio between the fid and the rope. We use a bigger fid if the rope diameter increases. The needle used in the video is in balance with the diameter of the rope.
But I wasn’t asking about the diameter of the fid, I was asking about length. Essentially, a longer fid would bury the splice longer and create a more secure splice, wouldn’t it?
A longer fid will indeed bury the splice longer but there is a maximum effectiveness. Therefore we advice to follow the length of the Selma fid which suits best to the diameter of the rope.
This splice is just beautiful (I am an absolute beginner). Would like to use it on a double braided 12mm polypropylene rope (1450 daN) that I want to use on a swing? Will the splice withstand the forces while swinging? Is it safe or should I use another technique.
The cover to core strength ratio is roundabout 40/60. So it's very important you splice the cover aswell. Use larged fid possible.
What do you do if the core is so small that it can't pass the cover? I'm trying to form a loop in 5/32" diameter rope.
Splicing diameters can be difficult. Depending on the brand and tyoe of rope it's possible to do so. However not for all ropes.
That looks nice. Although I do have a question... Why the complicated "remove core from cover-insert the cover into the core" etc and not just pull the end of the rope through an loosened point of the core and help it slide in ?
George for a double braided polyester rope the strength ratio is roughly 40-60, so 40% for the cover and 60% for the core. So you have to splice both in order to retain as much of the original break load. Whereas with double braided Dyneema ropes the core alone gives 90% of the total strength

Hello I have a question. I bought from you ropes and Selma fids. At the minute 4:22 you push the fid with the core inside the rope. Honestly I find your videos brilliant and I am able to follow each step till this one. My fid with the core just don’t go through the rope I have to use an inhuman strength and get stuck. Do you have any tips?? Thank you in advance for your time
Most of the time the needles might get stuck in the core at this specific point. If you can pull the core you know that the needles is running free from it. Try to do this step carefully. I had more success pulling it thro with a D splicing needle
Is this strong enough for a halyard for the mainsail if you use polyester? or do you need more "inside" to secure it?
depending a bit on the size of the boat, but for bigger boats we really recommend a halyard with a superfiber core!

Hi. What about Diamond Braid Polypropylene rope? It has some white stuff as it's core but the core is not braided. I followed your instructions and for my first it is not too shabby. But was forced to improvise when pushing the cover through the core. There must be a better way.

I just made a splice in 10mm dockflex dubbelbraided but had lots of trouble getting the core through the cover and even more trouble milking te cover over the 2 cores. Any tips on that?
This splice works for every double braid polyester. When it's diffficult to get the core into the cover you could use a D-Splicer pulling needle. When it's difficult to milk the cover just hit the splice with a hammer a few times. ua-cam.com/video/luWu1OUd3XI/v-deo.html
Hi! How to do this with only the core of the polyester rope? I want to taper the outside down of the last few meters to save weight and only put the eye on the core.
You could do it like in video 7.1/7.2 .
Only polyester is a lot less strong then a Dyneema or Stirotex fiber. So we would advice not to do this with Polyester because the breaking straight is drastically reduced.
so we would advice keeping the cover, or go to a Stirotex or Dyneema rope.
Is the technique the same with paracord? Probably smaller tool I imagine.

Yes you can. The size of the Selma fid depends on the diameter of the rope, not on the length of the eye.

No, for Dyneema there is a different splice as the strength of the ropes mainly comes down to the core, whereas with polyester ropes the strength comes from both the core and cover. This is the link to the Dyneema eye-splice!

We use a double braid polyester rope. In the video we use our Dockline (www.premiumropes.com/dockline) and that is for mooring. If you have other purposes, you could also use our Cruiser XTS rope for this splice: www.premiumropes.com/cruiser-xts

When done properly, an eye-splice will only reduce the rope strength by 5-10%.
Still not getting it. At the end you cut about 2 inch of core. Where did corresponding piece of cover go?
That is just because the cover and core are not used exactly alongside.

I think it is because the cover has to go round a double-sized diameter, at the point just before the eye of the splice, so what it uses up in diameter it loses in length.

How do you avoid locking the core? I seem to be good up to the point where I run the core back through, but it seems to bind at that point. I think this is likely due to me running the core through the rest of the core as I work it through. How does one avoid this, as I can't see where the fid is going?
Could it be that you accidently picked up a few fibres of the core with your splicing fids? We always advise to slide the smooth side of the fid along the core to avoid that. Another option is to use a Softfid for this step (www.premiumropes.com/softfid )
Did he do that correctly? Mark A would not line up with mark B. For it to do so, the cover would need to be buried into the core up to mark A..
Mark B nicely ends up with point A. In order to reach this cover is put into the core from point C' to point D'. For all measurements the same fid size should be used.
This is a very good and strong way to make the splice. There are some variations existing to this technique.
How do you know what size fid to use?

I have 150' 7/16 velocity cool arborist line. Double braid. And I want to splice a tight eye in it. Can I please get instructions please??
Do not follow these instructions, go to sampsons site and use their instructions. It will be a hell of a lot harder, as you will have to weave the strands of the core, but you will not plunge to your death!
at 4:05, where does the core go into the cover? at mark A?
No. Take one step back where you pull the cover from C to D. When that is done, you then just close thereafter (where the cover stops) insert the needle with the core. In this video you see that it is a couple of centimers afway from mark A
@@Premiumropes Sorry but unless you go back in at Point A you don't get an eye the size you measured out in the first instance. I'm trying to do this to include a thimble and it's too big every time using these instructions.
@@andyca15 It really depends what kind of ropes you use. Some ropes have more slack between the core and the cover. In that case you'll end up with a smaller eye. Depending of the rope the amount of slack you have to use can change.

We never used this fid before. Looks like it's made special for winchlines. You might be able depending on the diameter, but it seems that the fid is a bit long for splicing double braided ropes.

There is a ratio between the size of the fid and the rope. We use a bigger fid if the rope diameter increases. The Selma needles, like used in the video, are in balance with this ratio. The length of the fid determines the length of the splice. While splicing the actual length is less important. A long needle however isn’t always practical depending on the size of the rope and eye.
The difference between the fids is the way in which the ropes is attached to the fid. We prefer the Selma fids because it’s easy to put the line into the fid and you can use them without a pusher. Both fids will do the job.
What is locking the core?
Peter there is no actual lock. The tension on the loop will hold the splice in place or in extreme cases even makes the loop a little smaller. To keep the loop into place withouit any tension you put a whipping on there.
I guess I should rephrase - I know there is no actual lock. What does it mean 'to lock the core'? At 4:45
That means that you have accidently picked up the original core with the fid. So the two cores can't slide next to eachother
Ah... That explains why it was nearly impossible for me to pull my last fid through last week.
I just powered through, which seems to have made the working of the splice into is final shape much more difficult too.
