Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 - SPROCKET SWAP - 16 Teeth

  • On todays video we swap the sprocket on the silver foxes Royal Enfield Interceptor 650. The standard sprocket has 15 teeth and he has decided to add a tooth and go to a 16 teeth sprocket. Why you may ask....so did I. Well the aim is for easier cruising.... but does that come at a cost?

    I have ridden on the 16 tooth for a while now and love it so much, I wanted more.
    I just switched to a 17 tooth front end down a couple in the rear.
    16 tooth on front with stock rear would get me 80mph at 5k rpm.
    Now, Im at 90mph at 5k rpm.
    Certainly a slight drop in torque, but I also installed a Booster Plug to help compensate.
    For how I ride, I'm happy.

    Ever the iconoclast, I went to the 14T sprocket, as I'm dragging a sidecar. I just checked in to you great channel to find if there would be any items I'd forgotten before starting the job. Just 'discovered' this channel. Great stuff. Like the approach. Think my Interceptor might get this 16t mod soon.
    4000rpm is 62mph indicated at present.
    I have found due to a decent torque spread the top two gears got me lost. Hooking for a sixth when already there or cruising in fifth. Only a close look at the tacho gave things away as 250-300 rpm difference !!!! Best mods on mine so far? GiPro digital gear indicator and AEW102 exhausts.
    Keep up the tech chats please!!!!!

    • @2WHEELSor2WINGS
      @2WHEELSor2WINGS 2 роки тому

      The engines torque of course is unaltered. But 1st gear has more torque than 6th. So in the same way by slightly up gearing the bike the torque at the rear wheel is very slightly altered. The bikes character is unchanged, this is more of a tweak than a change.
      But not quite sure what you mean by "gradually decreases"?
      The torque decrease in every gear.

    I read many years ago, that going to a bigger counter sprocket increases the radius and makes it easier for the chain to make the bend around the sprocket.

    Just did this myself a few weeks ago and am really pleased with the change. The rev's are a bit lower on the higher speeds and that gives a really relaxed ride overall. Thanks Paul, I wanted to hear peoples opinion on this. Did you use a tool when tightening or did you do the same as us? The one on G’s bike must never have been done up to spec from factory as the gun just wound it off no problem. I’m having a guess it wasn’t even 40ft lbs. It’s an old gun and it doesn’t remove the landy wheel nuts anymore which are around 90 ft lbs from memory.

      I did more or less what you did to get the nut off,
      But to put the 16 tooth cog on I got my son Harry to sit on the bike (off the stand), and I put a brick behind the back wheel, whilst he held the brakes on, and I torqued the nut up to 145 newton metres, then proceeded to a line the back up again,
      I got the idea off a chap I was talking to at Squires Café Yorkshire, who owned a 650 Continental,
      I had this done once to an old 2008 350 Bullet to get it to keep up with traffic at 60mph instead of being 55mph they weren't very fast, not like the new 350 Classic,
      That old Bullet used to struggle up hills a bit though,
      But I have to say,
      My 650 Interceptor is absolutely brilliant, and solo riding a good, up steep hills as well,
      I've had 105 mph out of it (for the record not on the Queens Highway), and it was still pulling, but it was time to shut off lol 😂

    Nice video! I changed mine six months ago and would never go back to the 15 tooth sprocket.. it suits my style of riding fine. It for me is a game changer, especially on fast A roads and motorways.. holds a decent speed at a more relaxed engine speed. The only downside I think is when you are caught in very slow stop start traffic and can't filter.. 1st gear is taller and now you can't crawl along slowly with without feathering the clutch more. Haven't been long distance touring with the 16 tooth but I suspect the advantages will outweigh the disadvantages.. if not then it's an easy fix.

    Don't get it. I think 1st is too high on this bike already. But a 14t sprocket if available would probably reduce it too much. Probably better to add a tooth or two on the rear.

      @2WHEELSor2WINGS 2 роки тому

      I suppose it all depends on how you ride, I did comment on your concern at the end of the video, after the short test ride.
      Mine breaths a bit easier with the intake and exhaust modifications.
      This unstrangled state liberates a few more horses. So it pulls a bit better than standard and copes fine with first, but gains a more relaxed rev range for cruising at 60, 70, 80...........

      Stock chain length works just fine with the 16T. Considering the tractor-like nature of the 650 engine....taller gearing is absolutely the way to go. Even when hopped up with pipes and cam....it pulls the taller gearing very nicely.

Mine has a 16t on and I can't see me changing back, my 650 has free flowing downpipes and filter (Stratos) and Classic bike shop silencers with a PC5 mapped accordingly. 6 speeds on this bike was too many for me 456 being too close, with the extra tooth it makes more sense.

      I'd like to see a 14T sprocket video.I live in NZ & maximum speed is 100kmh everywhere & I ride with Harley Davidson alot & can keep up but at intersections they put 20meters on me but I catch up quickly.Also when following Harley's into corners & twisties they slow into corners & fast out.First time I rode with them they I had to brake hard they that slow into corner compared to lighter & more nimble Interceptor but they fast out & put 20meters on me.
      When I in front on twisty stuff I gap them but I did notice they don't like it if I pass them.I only got S&S race only slip on's & was thinking big bore 2-2 headers for low - mid range performance & a extra 5hp might help with that.A 14t be a cheaper mod & be stealth & in NZ we very rarely go over 140kmh lose your license instantly for 28days if you caught then it's a Court appearance & fine & further penalties.All very strict, our A roads should be faster at least 110,115kmh.

    • @morri03
      @morri03 2 роки тому +2

      @@ruahinesrider I don’t think 14 would be the go. A lot of people like the 16 but my view is that the stock gearing is perfect. This is not a very powerful motorcycle so can’t easily handle taller gearing. It makes some sense if you spend a lot of time cruising at higher speeds ie 110km/h plus. 4,000rpm at 100km/h from stock gearing gives a nice roll on performance in sixth as well as not too much clutch slip moving off. For brisk riding the secret is being smooth and maintaining momentum so use higher gears, don’t brake much and roll off and roll back on the lower early. Don’t forget that if you fit wider rear tyres in the future as many do that will automatically increase the gearing a bit. Everyone is different but that is what works for me. I enjoy riding the Enfield as much as my 150hp Ducati despite the night and day performance differences.

      I know quite a few people that have done this and really like the feel of cruising at lower revs on the motorway or long fast A roads. It should also help fuel economy.
      Possible downsides are a taller first gear and slightly reduced acceleration.
      It's not a large change so more riding is necessary for me to mske a proper evaluation. 😎
