Spent 5 years in that area and a lot of the time in Ogden Canyon, beautiful area. Wish I would have been a pilot when I was out there maybe someday I can go back, sister still lives in Ogden Canyon.
Dan is a true nerd with a cool plane and what would seem to be a great product. I live at the foot of these mountains and never tire of seeing them.
I'll take that as a compliment, no matter how it was intended 😅😅
The Glasair is an amazing airplane especially the Glasair III. Be careful though, it is slippery and you must fly it accordingly. Dan compares it to his 210. That's like comparing a Corvette to a Suburban.

So what makes it so funny when he gets in your beautiful plane that you have spent 39 years with. He makes a few comments as a lot of people do who own certified airplanes and are nervous about the size of the glassair. You were all business getting everything ready to fly safe. But it was just so funny to watch him keep getting nervous and try to make little comments. And then when you start to go through the pass.and you've done it a thousand times and he gets so nervous... hahaha. I've got a 337 Turbo skymaster. Sometimes, I get a little nervous in a single-engine plane as well. But when you're the passenger, you just have to sit back and let the pilot do their thing. Somebody needs to put him in an unlimited aerobatic plane and go wild for about 20 minutes. After that, he won't worry about much of anything! By the way, great video, guys. Love the glassair and love all these great videos you guys do. Very professional and informative. And sometimes very funny.
@@jonathanmorgan611 The other Dan flies a C-210 but out in the DFW area. He is also a CFII.
Tower knows that it’s a local plane that does local flights as often as cross country trips. He was just asking so he knows to expect a return or not.
Nothing flies as nice as a Glasair!

The tower would ask you if you plan on being back in the Ogden area (my first flying lessons were out of South Jordan!) that evening due to the mountainous region and the fact that if you are expected to be coming back, they can send out rescue parties if you don't.
There's no other airplane in the piston world that compares in performance and handling to a Glasair.
II and III seem to be around 42" so this is about 40" wide? Lancair 360 is about 42" as well so not huge either. Lancair IV-P is 46". That's where Lancair left Glasair in the dust :) to be fair, it outperforms any piston prop.
Well dan, it’s pretty simple! If your known to reside from a certain towered airport then if they ask “are you coming back” and say “yes, in about an hour or so” just as he said, and two hours ticks on and you don’t make it back, then they can start the initial search. They will start by calling around to known associates of that person, other airports within the fuel range of that aircraft, then if they don’t have any success in locating you, then they’ll send out the search party to hopefully find you, or at least the wreckage. That is just a question certain people would ask to take care of their own, in a matter of speaking.
I wish that were true but it's not, that's why pilots file flight plans and have an emergency location transmitter required on board. I've never had this request at any other airport but so often here at KOGD. I suspect because of the mountains, they want to know ahead of time, because of being a "fast mover", to more easily sequence you in with the predominant training aircraft in the area when they anticipate and become aware of your imminent return.
@@danblumel my home airport in Alaska here asks me if, and when I plan to return because if I’m late getting back to the airport then they can make some effort to locate me. You don’t have to file a flight plan if your not crossing international borders, and if I’m just out pleasure flying I, and many others hardly ever do! In Alaska you can have very little radar coverage, and fly an area the size of Ohio and your radios and transponders are of no use. So I assumed that’s why they asked here, and I still feel I am correct on that assumption.

i don't know why they don't stagger seating in planes . offset them 10-12" so people aren't shoulder to shoulder

Perhaps Dan the passenger will answer that, since he is a CFII. It was a smooth landing from my perspective and she does land a bit "hot". About 90 mph on final.

Actually surprisingly it's extremely comfortable with temperfoam seats that contour to your body with body heat, 6 hour legs are no problem ( I have a good bladder ) & at about 220 mph, can cover ground quickly. Also flew it to the arctic circle through Alaska with my son about 2004 or 2005. I even once spent the night sleeping in it, I landed prematurely because of a significant rain storm, didn't want to get soaked so never got out. She carries 64 gallons so 7 hours is quite possible.

@@paratyshow Well your shoulders do touch the other person unless a thin woman. You "wear it", not just ride in it. Watch how I slide in at the beginning after I coached Dan how to get in first. 2 guys with defensive lineman shoulders would be impossible. I am 6'3" I don't wear shoes in it, my legs would be a little too long. I built it to fit my length dimensions as a maximum.

Did you ask about Radio interference from lightning ⚡️
Not sure your meaning, but never had a problem with lightning, but did experience Saint Elmo's fire once, while flying through light snow which evidently created a phenomenal amount of static electricity. This happened in Canada on the way to Whitehorse in the Yukon and Fairbanks, AK
