I used to run between Chicago and Lincoln NE on I-80 years ago. Used to stop at Sapp Brothers truck stop west of Omaha. They had a water tower that looked like a giant coffee pot. I haven’t been that way in 30 years or so.

The Archway (Great Platte River Road Archway Monument) " Since it opened in the year 2000, the Archway has stood as an enduring tribute to the adventurers who traveled the Great Platte River Road though Nebraska and helped to build America. Over the years, we have welcomed and inspired over 1.5 million visitors with our story." looks like a visitor center, Museum. and can get some dining i think?. from what i see on pictures the bridge part has a lot of Exhibits in it as you walk over the freeway

I was bored to tears every time I ran I 80 through Nebraska. Just the same watching you do it.

    • @bigredgreg1
      @bigredgreg1 Рік тому +4

I’ve heard that comment a lot over the years. I-80 generally follows the path of the Platte River which is a very shallow waterway. It certainly does get boring and gives the impression that Nebraska is a flat state. But get away from the Platte River and you will find undulating hills, especially in the Sandhills region along scenic Hwy 2, and you might better appreciate the level roadway. Truckers used to comment about the 50 mile stretch of I-80 between Lincoln and Omaha as being less flat but complained about the pavement being installed upside down. Yep, it was a bit rough, especially around the 1970s. Around that same time, Monfort of Colorado used to run a lot of trucks hauling meat to the East, and I mean they RAN. The left lane of I-80 in both directions across Nebraska was known as “The Monfort Lane”. Some of you will remember that.

I was sat having a beer in a bar and the TV was on, not paying too much attention and did not know what program was on, I'm thinking to myself watching the 2nd plane hit, this must be a trailer for an upcoming film. Man, the mood changed in the bar as it was half full of US guys, this was in the town of Hsin Chu, Taiwan and the guys worked at the huge IT park just out of town. I was there building a new High-Speed Rail north to south of the island.
A few of them started making phone calls home as they had family and friends working in the towers or nearby, I can tell you it was very scary as the lines were jammed and the guys could not get through.

ALDOT built arches on I-20/59 over our main drag in town w/lights reflecting on them-doesn’t do anything except a maintenance headache. 9/11 I was @ my Army Reserve unit for a one day training event. We all thought it was part of the training until we were told to stay off the Internet. Watched the towers fall then we all were sent home. President Bush was coming from Offut AFB (just South of Omaha) in the Underground Command Center.
That’s an EMD DDA40X (UP 6900) twin engine diesel (first one built) & an ALCO Big Boy Steam Locomotive 4023. The UP 6939 DDA40X was used by UP in excursion service until donated this year to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America in Silvia’s, IL. There are a few DDA40X’s around in museums around the country.

Gonna be hard & I may cry as she’s a very sweet & loving dog. My rescue Retriever is beside himself & scared to death he’s gonna lose another packmate.

Steel for steel - always! And for equipment. I hauled 2 cars for a friend. Front car was a 71 VW bug. And if you guessed I used chains, you guessed right. 2 chains and 4 binders. It's much better to over secure by habit than to develop bad habits. Like the hotshot you showed - he's obviously new and his SAFER results shows that.

Steve - with regard to the UP diesel you saw, it was a DDA40X Centennial Class locomotive. It was one of the few diesels built with eight axles. They were all numbered in the 6900 series as UP's centennial year was 1969 and that was the year that these locomotives were built. I remember seeing them a time or two. They were all retired by the end of the 1980's. The UP also had a DD35A-class locomotive that likewise had eight axles but I don't know much about them and I never saw one "in person". It had a more conventional box cab as opposed to the "cowl" type of cab seen on the loco on display here. There is another Centennial locomotive on display in Cody Park in North Platte, NE.

In CT they use rest areas or some of the larger commuter parking lots for roadside inspections.

Steve, I remember watching a History Channel series "Extreme Trains" a few years ago, and the reason you saw those two locomotives in that spot along I-80 going thru Omaha, NE is because that is where Union Pacific Railroad's main HQ and dispatching center are located for their entire rail network. BTW, were you able to finish that melon delivery you talked about at all?

Hey when will you put back Orwell's second stack? Withou it, it's not... Orwell, if you get my drift...
Those two haulers are asking for major trouble... not securing the cargo was bad enough, but no tie-down devices on that other truck, just relying on the cargo's weight is downright insane! Ugh!
BTW, that diesel locomotive next to that Big Boy is a DDA40X, the largest diesel-electric locomotive ever made, with 2 645 engines on one long frame. This locomotive is the culmination of that insane "horsepower war" between the three locomotive builders at the time: Alco, GE and EMD.
Well, 9/11 changed a lot of things, something that was repeated when COVID first struck... and many of those changes were not for the better.
Anyway, stay safe, and keep on rolling!

I was installing a older gentlemans security system/ cameras. Litterally i had just gotten out his attic from pulling all the wires and was starting to wire cpu. This guy comes and he's like "You need to come see this right now!" He didn't yell it to me. He wasn't quietly saying it either. He was very adament that i needed to see this at the time and i'm thinking i'm gonna be late to my next job. I might have been watching the news for a minute or three when the second plane hit.

I remember i was in BORDENTOWN, NJ at the petro on 9/11
i woke to all this screaming an noise; only to find out that the towers were falling
i had a delivery at the pier in ELIZABETH, NJ (PORT NEWARK)
i turned on my TV; an yup; there it was .... WOW
suffice to say i made it to the port only to be shut down an had to sit until around midnight
when i was told i had to wait till the morning to possible get unloaded; or i could leave an find a truckstop
i stayed with the rest of the drivers there an we listened to the actions of the day until morning.... crazy crazy crazy
couldnt call home or anyone because the networks of all cell phones, etc where down.... yes; a very crazy day ....🍓🍒🍓🍒🍓
