Mike Trout and Shohei are automatically at a disadvantage if championships are a prerequisite to qualifying for this list. It's a whole lot tougher for a single player in baseball to have an overall 'wins above replacement' impact in the sport than in a team sport like basketball with fewer players on the playing surface, and limit-less 'at-bats' so to speak.

The reason why did because Deion Sanders is the unquestionable best cornerback ever. So, Deion played two major sports and he was the greatest ever in one of them.
Just some other names not mentioned that I think deserve to be in this conversation would be: Michael Schumacher Pele Peyton Manning Laurence Taylor Roger Federer Jim Brown Tony Hawk Willie Mays Sugar Ray Robinson Carl Lewis Jesse Owens
Couldn't you argue that Shaq has the same 3 criteria points Lebron has? Rings, atheletic monster and changed the game? That still doesn't mean either of them are better than MJ, as his skill level is above the 2.
I personally don't consider things like swimming or track to be "sports". A sport is a game, and in a game you must be in *direct opposition* to your opponent. So if we go by "greatest sportsman", I would not consider guys like Phelps or Bolt. But even then it's difficult to define "greatest", because, for example, when comparing LeCrybaby and MJ, you have to consider things like era and longevity. MJ *DOMINATED* in an era where it was *much more difficult* to dominate offensively, where as LeChina being as dominant as he has been for such a long time is just incredible. Both are peerless in those aspects. So I really like Jake's trying to more narrowly define "greatest" with specific parameters. It's also really hard to compare different sports, as some are far more team reliant than others, so it's harder for an individual to stand out. But, if you made me choose, imo Gretzky is far and away the GOAT of all sports (by my definition). Yes, he played in an era where it was easier to score, but he revolutionized hockey by exploiting it, and remained as dominant as he was even after the rest of the league adapted. If you took away every goal he ever scored, he would still have the most points of all time in just assists, and the only players who are even close to that number are guys like Jagr and Messier who played like 250-300 games more than he did.
Please help me out. I'm a dummy, I guess. So, Kareem is rarely in GOAT conversations, but it was always respectable if someone were to include him. But he was included because of the scoring record he had, the unstoppable skyhook, and the rings. Got it. So, now, Lebron dethrones Kareem, who was rarely in the GOAT conversations to begin with, with the scoring record and now we have everyone saying that that alone makes him surpass Jordan? Am I missing something? And why is DW shy about the OBVIOUS qualifications you have to have to fully appreciate this 'cupcake' era? Am I supposed to just ignore the fact that it's EASIER to score??Is it really feasible to think that Lebron would have had this many points if he started out in the early 80's? I seriously, highly, sincerely doubt it. And now the whole framing for this GOAT dialogue has changed. I can't even bring any of this crap up without everyone going nuts about the fact that I just don't appreciate Lebron's achievement. Ummmmm, no. But the fact that they go there so quickly tells me all I need to know about the typical Lebron fan.
Tennis stars and Soccer stars are highly underrated in USA and those are physically and mentally demanding sports than Basketball and NFL, I agree with Michael Jordon, Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt though
If you insist on having a 5 GOATS from any sport on a list, I think you have to exclude basketball entirely just because they are legitimate arguments for a GOAT. Almost no one is gonna argue against a Tom Brady, Tiger Woods, Michael Phelps, Wayne Gretzky or Mesi. In Bball, I could make genuine arguments for probably a dozen guys as the GOAT. Bill Russel, Wilt Chamberlain, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Steph Curry, Lebron James and more.
Pistol Pete (Could Play well today) or Larry Bird (Not a great athlete but killed them on the court with his mental ability 2-3 steps ahead and calling his shots), I like both Hershel Walker & Bo Jackson (saw Bo run the fence and flat footed leap into the stands & AU) Hershel did ballet & MMA in his 40's dude is still a beast...If Bo hadn't had his freak injury he would have set some records for his time...there are so many others that this is hard to do...
