Calvin Lee dude when i saw Metallica & RHCP I no longer took this list seriously lol. Even eruption is somewhat easy to play being mostly pentatonic there's harder VH songs like Spanish Fly. No Yngwie, Synyster Gates, or Nuno, but Kirk Hammett, the laughing stock of the guitar world, makes the list . Fancy techniques do not beat pure dexterity on the fretboard. I know people who may be "more technical" but can't play solos as basic as Crazy Train. I hear the same applies to Tosin Abasi, my buddy saw him live and said he sucks, all he can do is do that tapping crap.
+Johnny Riddle yeah, it's a pretty bad list. not sure about tosin abasi though. maybe all he does is crazy tapping (i dont really listen to his band) but he does that crazy tapping really, really well. (i sure couldn't do it.)
Calvin Lee on second thought, you're right, he is great at what he does, and I forgot that this was a list about the actual songs, not the players themselves. I quit learning multiple songs because that goes way above my head. Albeit unconventional, his playing is very unique and I have to retract my previous statement about him because it is pretty damn hard now that I think about it lol.
Agree! & 'Eruption' as the #1 pick? Sure it may be a challenge to some, but as it is pretty much a pure guitar solo solo(w/o other band elements), any decent rascal that has worked it out at least once can fake it well enough for the local drunks at the tavern down the strip. Basically, given as easy as the riff is to learn well enough for casual performance and it be the #1 pick indicates the whole list is but a joke despite a few mention ones being worthy such as 'Sultans of Swing', but there are plenty of rock songs that have more demanding guitar duties that can easily prove to be very tricky to pull off, especially live than most on this list. It would appear that a non musician and a novice guitarist put this list together as if it sounds difficult, then it must be so. There are plenty of tricky rascals even within the more popular realm of rock music that can mess any good musician up even if it is just the nature of the rhythmic nuances and patterns, etc.

@@Webxs231 That is absolute utter nonsense! Megadeth has never been famous for having a "best drummer" as you say. They have gone through a string of drummers in their history and none of them has ever been praised as "best". Gar Samuelson and Nick Menza stand out as among the best they've had but neither could be called best by anyone who has a clue what they're talking about. On the guitar side of things however, Chris Poland, Marty Friedman, Chris Broderick are all world-class guitarists and acclaimed as such. It's a shame none of them are in the band anymore however.

I am a guitarist of 37yrs so, that gives me the right to comment on this entire video. Only The John Petrucci, Tosin Abasi, maybe Dragon Force, Eruption 'ehhh' it's completely possible with practicing. But, you could practive your life and never get a Tosin Abasi or John Petrucci solo, dragon force is a guitar practice exercise music. 'The Smiths' have absolutely no right being in the same video as Tosin or John P for hardest anything about guitar.
Jason Rimmer we are t waiting, that song isnt hard, and the only hard thing is trying to get that sound from pedals. There is no chance that song would ever be in a hardest guitar riff every. Dunno why you think its a hard song to do tbh.
Michael Pukmel yjm just got a video clip. Also if ur gonna put one of eddies solos on here why not Spanish fly or cathedral, both take much more skill and technique.
Actually speak to any guitarists when making this video? 1. Most of the Eruption clip wasn't Eruption, mainly a live solo section from 1986. 2. Eruption, whilst probably one of the most impactful and influential guitar tracks, is not the hardest by far. 3. Johnny Marr and John Frusciante really? 4. No Malmsteen. To which many people still cannot play accurately or with the same feeling. 5. Perpetual Burn - Jason Becker. Largely heralded by most players as the hardest. The speed, technical ability, feeling and general stamina required to play this is close to impossible. Some have tried, but have never captured the feeling of his playing. Lastly, you guys should not confuse the hardest songs to play with the most influential. Big difference. Hendrix and Van Halen are extremely influential, inspiring legions of guitarists, but consequently have inspired a lot harder pieces to play. And also this is not all about speed, but also feeling and touch. David Gilmore and Gary Moore anyone?
Totally agree. This list was made by someone who knows nothing about music or guitar playing and wanted to make a mainstream list in about 5 minutes. I know at least 4 guitar players that are able to play that stuff. You want an impossible song to play? Go listen to some Aristocrats
The Roman Bro, you know I'm just messing with you right? I know who Guthrie Govan s and I've been listening to Exotic Cakes and The Arisoicrats for five years man. This list is pretty BS but is made for a mainstream audience. Believe me, if they really wanted to do an accurate list, it'd just be a list of Guthrie Govan or Yngwie Mainsteen songs. Btw man, just because a song is simple doesn't make it inherently bad. Case and point: The Beatles, The Rollin Stones, Punk rock in general. Btw, I majored in piano performance in college and have been playing guitar, Keys, and bass in bands for years so I know difficult music man.
Other harder songs 1.- Metropolis Part 1. - Dream Theater 2.- In the Name of God - Dream Theater 3.- Constant Motion - Dream Theater 4.- Illumination Theory - Dream Theater All Songs Dream Theater is Harder.
yo why the hell is dream theater and animals as leaders behind van halen and why is rhcp even on this list? where's chon? where's plini? where's paul gilbert? where's satriani?
I don't agree with most of this list, but i was happy they gave a shoutout to Animals as Leaders. I actually saw them and Chon together in Philly like 3 years ago and I was completely blown away
Oh? I can play nearly all of these songs (of course given a week to learn them at most). How could you assume that I can't? Also, I am not insulting the guitarists, I have tremendous respect for them. I am insulting the obviously unqualified creators of this video, who know next to nothing about guitar and have no real basis for selecting what is really "hard to play."
I taught my brother to play right handed and he had to make a 180 from his left handed mind. He's a badd ass bass player now! Its better to learn the instrument right handed the way it was originally made.
YES YOU ARE SO RIGHT I HAVE BEEN PLAYING GUITAR FOR 2 YEARS MASTER OF PUPPETS TORNADO OF SOULS WAS EASY BUT THIS RINGS OF SATURN MAN I CANT PLAY IT LMAO THIS INADEQUATE IS SO HARD
That's because nobody can actually sweep pick and everyone should stop sweep picking. I'm tired of walking into Guitar Center and hearing 15 year olds scrubbing an arpeggio, every note out of time, half of them not even sounding.
So many people claim to have mastered Eruption, yet I rarely hear anyone who captures the feel at all. Most versions are note for note, but lack any musicality. The scarcity of other memorable solos in the 40 years since Eruption is a testament to how brilliant it was in 1978.
OMG! Tina S. is phenomenal! I'd really like to hear her do some more Dream Theater. She looks like she's bored to death when she is doing some of the most incredible shredding! I believe she is French.
So basically, you're telling me that Jordan Rudess, John Petrucci, Mike Portnoy/Mike Mangini, John Myung and James Labrie are "not that good" and overrated? Jesus.
In this case though, they are objectively wrong; most of these songs aren't that difficult to play at all, and *definitely* not the hardest ever. Dream theater and animals as leaders are very difficult to play, but even though I love a lot of the other songs, they just aren't very hard. Like, little wing is a great song; one of the most beautiful electric guitar songs ever. but it's just not difficult. I played it note-for-note at a school talent show in 7th grade, and I'm not a great guitarist; I consider myself pretty average now, and I wasn't very good at all way back then. (Although there are a lot of songs/guitarists out there who make me feel *WAY* below average as a player; this list just doesn't have many of those songs. Two, maybe three at the most.) To sum it up, *long paragraph says list is bad.* I probably should've just went with that. "List is bad" is a lot more to the point than my little rant. Oh god, I'm still doing it. Just talking about nothing, over and over. And you're still reading it! I'm not sure which is worse. Although, I bet you're very attractive, with just the *loveliest* genitals, whatever those genitals happen to be, If I had to guess, I'd say penis; never bet on red. (Queue rim-shot) Why am I still typing? None of this is anything; just empty nonsense. That first paragraph is all true though. So, ya know... That's something I guess... i am a deeply unhappy person.
I think this is a more accurate order for the ten songs in the video: 10. This Charming Man 9. Snow (Hey Oh) 8. Little Wing 7. Eruption 6. Sultans of Swing 5. Master of Puppets 4. Through the Fire and Flames 3. Cliffs of Dover 2. CAFO 1. Scene Seven I. The Dance of Eternity
Mentions to add: Every Breath You Take - Police, this song is very hard when you have short fingers, and I got Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding by Elton John, the song has 35 Chords and the song is 11 minutes long. There could be other Elton John songs I could put.
Yeah but every cover i heard of Sultans no matther who played it nothig ever sounds close to as good as Knopfler does it. People concentrate so much on the bending and well sure they get the sound but are onlt playing 1/10 of the notes.
"Lets name guitar techniques we googled (And in some cases get it totally fucking wrong (Fucking "PINCH HARMONIES"??) and put them next to popular songs" And somehow everyone is fooled... This is an insult to guitarists around the world
John Walsh agreed. Pronunciations are wrong, thinking switching from 4/4 to 2/4 is difficult....they googled "hard guitar songs" and came up with this garbage. Respect to the bands, many of these songs are impressive and writing them would be ridiculous, but there are actual reasons songs are difficult and they aren't listed here
True. I know how to play Snow in guitar, and it ain't that hard. I know almost everything about RHCP Stuff ( my fav band ) And they have no difficult in the guitar ( And if they have, Snow is not one of them )
DragonForce sadly wouldn’t even be on this list if not for their Guitar Hero popularity...and while I don’t agree with this list, there really isn’t a harder song on this entire list than Through the Fire and Flames...hell, any DragonForce song, ANY, would overtake these other songs by a long shot...

Agree with you. There is footage and documented reports that there are extra guitarists that play behind the scenes at their shows, each guitarist playing a set pattern to aid in that illusion that they are playing at an extreme speed. Not to mention they shy away from playing it when randomly asked to do so during interviews hmmmm....
+yourcomradeconrad word is, the drummer uses triggers. Not sure if that affects your assessment. (Heck, it's still leagues better than I could attempt)
yeah, i just did a bit of research and it's said that they might have used triggers on the album, but not live. however, their new drummer got in after posting a drum cover of ttfaf that was real, so he can definitely play it.
Raspberry Jam Delta-V is a personal favorite of mine, and I would have liked to see it get at least an honorable mention. Or Satch Boogie. Or One Big Rush. Or Cryin', but that one is more for artistry than technical proficiency.
I agree, the man is a living legend, even to this day he is creating music while almost completely paralyzed. I got excited at the beginning when they finally showcased him for a moment but was pissed when they, yet again, don't bother to mention Jason anywhere in the list, not even in the honorable mentions
Oh well, its better for Jason to stay somewhat of a hidden gem than for watchmojo to ruin his mystique and uncovered genius with their cumbersome and lazy music journalism to their swathes of idiotic fans
In the video thay said ``try to play Sultan of wings with the same technique hes using`` obviusly with a pick isnt that hard, but still, this list is shit
"try to play Sultan of wings with the same technique hes using", yeah but this is pretty moronic. That's like saying "Purple Haze is the hardest song, because Hendrix plays it left handed, try that, it's impossible!!" I guess to a lesser extent this goes for all songs on this list. I for example would have a hard time with Master Of Puppets because I never practice quick downstrokes, while for many metal guitarrists that's probably a piece of cake. I OTOH don't think I would struggle much with Little Wing but for some guitarrists that might be hell to play.
That's funny shit right there! My friend used to have a Pandora's box and he was like dude listen to how good this song I wrote is, I go over and turn the effects off and it sounded like something a 4 year old would come up with!

It might be hard to believe but I ain't jesus christ and I'll only learn sarcasm if you learn to play the guitar😜😂
Steve Callanan I'll learn guitar when you can grow facial hair or lose your virginity
Hahaha done and done😂 you'll have to give me something better than that seeing as you were giving me god standards originally
Let's get this straight, "Taps" is a piece that is played when someone has died. "Tapping" is a technique used on the guitar.
Well, I want tapping at my funeral.
@@StamfordBridge "WELL GOOD LUCK BECAUSE YOU'RE GONNA NEED YOUR FENDER STRATOCASTER AND HAVE TO ARPEGGIO AND HAMMER ON AND PULL OF AND TREMOLO AND ALTERNATE PICK YOUR PINCH HARMONIES TO GET TAPPING RIGHT!" - probably some dude at watchmojo
Taps is (was? Idk) also the military curfew bugle
Most of these arent really hard if you are somewhat decent on guitar.
the list is bullshit, i can easily play sultans of swing, snow or that smiths song but CAFO is way out of my league
Justo Lanuse As may be Dream Theater's.
it is hard when you have to be on stage and get in sync with the rest of the band. alone it definitely is easier.
"Eruption" by Van Halen will kick your ass.

Tornado of souls as an honorable mention? You gotta be kidding me!
Maggiethegsd honestly Tornado of souls isn’t even that bad imo. I can’t play half of the songs here, but I can play tornado somewhat decently
As far as megadeth goes, tornado of souls isn’t bad. Poison Was The Cure’s riff is a lot harder I’d say
@@ironmota1111 the hardest part of tornado of souls is obviously the solo. Otherwise, the rhythm is almost easy to play, but not so while singing!
@@ironmota1111 poison was the cure 's riff is obviously much harder as they focused on the main riff there instead of the solo, but in tornado of souls, it is inverted
But the Smiths?? Is on here????
Normal people's perspective: oh damn that's hard alright!!
Guitarists perspective: He pronounced tremolo wrong for fuck sakes!!
Sodium Tetraborate... You're right. In fact it should more properly be called a 'vibrato' bar because it alters the pitch. Tremolo is a whole other effect and is usually on the amp or done with a pedal.
Sodium Tetraborate IKR
The second one is also any Italian's perspective. When will you ever learn to put the right accent on Italian words? XD
xzn1989 Hahahaha good one, I didn't see that coming.
naming Eddie Van Halen's Eruption as number one must be a joke
Eruption is so much easier than tender surrender. RIP Eddie ♥️
yup Eruptions is the type of songs that people who dont play guitar thinks is fricking hard, but is actually easy
Its actually easy to play (for a seasoned player), it just sounds like its hard.
True. I could play Eruption when I was 15
Eruption is extremely difficult to play properly.
Tons of people can "play" it. Not a whole lot play it correctly.

Umm megadeath isnt known for their gutairist they are litteraly known for having the best drummer, and watchmojo is not talking about song in general he is talking about guitars only
@@Webxs231 That is absolute utter nonsense!
I love how all the songs they show in the intro are harder than the ones on the actual list (except Dream Theater and Animals as Leaders)
Except sweet child o mine. That's easier than 8 of the songs on the list

David Gilmore and Gary Moore anyone?
omg shut the fuck up
Totally agree. This list was made by someone who knows nothing about music or guitar playing and wanted to make a mainstream list in about 5 minutes. I know at least 4 guitar players that are able to play that stuff. You want an impossible song to play? Go listen to some Aristocrats
Why? He's right I bet you don't even play guitar.
The Roman Bro, chill! Just 'cause you can't play the easiest one on this list doesn't mean you gotta bash on the list!

Cyrekt In the world of people who have never picked up a guitar
my nephew learned Eruption at 13. Ive been playing for 20 years and have trouble with Dream Theater.
So many people claim to have mastered Eruption, yet I rarely hear anyone who captures the feel at all. Most versions are note for note, but lack any musicality. The scarcity of other memorable solos in the 40 years since Eruption is a testament to how brilliant it was in 1978.

Two, maybe three at the most.)
To sum it up, *long paragraph says list is bad.*

Raspberry Jam Delta-V is a personal favorite of mine, and I would have liked to see it get at least an honorable mention. Or Satch Boogie. Or One Big Rush. Or Cryin', but that one is more for artistry than technical proficiency.
There are more than three chords? I gotta talk to the guitarrist in our band...
Hamtiman no there are only three, A Major A Minor and A7. JK
Nice!
hamtiman *cough cough* Elvis *cough cough*
ThatDrawingBassist 07 get some medicine
jjwp 88 Why?
Number 1 hardest rock song ‘lil Wayne solo starts play’
the whole honorable mentions list was better
except for cliffs of dover
Nobody Can Master Steve vai
it always is in these videos. I swear, they might actually know what they're talking about, but they just act retarded so they can get the views
How is nothing by jason becker on this list? mabels fatal fable is stupid hard to play
Every Jason Becker's song is hard to me lol
W Max agreed...the fact that none are on this list is dumb af
heck yeah
I agree, the man is a living legend, even to this day he is creating music while almost completely paralyzed. I got excited at the beginning when they finally showcased him for a moment but was pissed when they, yet again, don't bother to mention Jason anywhere in the list, not even in the honorable mentions
Oh well, its better for Jason to stay somewhat of a hidden gem than for watchmojo to ruin his mystique and uncovered genius with their cumbersome and lazy music journalism to their swathes of idiotic fans
*puts CAFO at number 4*
me: okay that's pretty reasonable
*sultans of swing number 3*
me:
id love to be one of those people, sultans isnt that hard if you have entry level knowledge in swing or blues
In the video thay said ``try to play Sultan of wings with the same technique hes using`` obviusly with a pick isnt that hard, but still, this list is shit
"try to play Sultan of wings with the same technique hes using", yeah but this is pretty moronic. That's like saying "Purple Haze is the hardest song, because Hendrix plays it left handed, try that, it's impossible!!"
I guess to a lesser extent this goes for all songs on this list. I for example would have a hard time with Master Of Puppets because I never practice quick downstrokes, while for many metal guitarrists that's probably a piece of cake. I OTOH don't think I would struggle much with Little Wing but for some guitarrists that might be hell to play.
Johannes Wiberg Well, your right jaja I struggle with little wing while Master is one of the easiest songs from Metallica in my opinion
Sultans of swing is actually quite hard. It might look and sound easy but all the licks in between the main riff are quite difficult to master
"Eruption is the hardest ever"
-watch mojo
LOL....these guys are impressed by players who tap.
That's funny shit right there! My friend used to have a Pandora's box and he was like dude listen to how good this song I wrote is, I go over and turn the effects off and it sounded like something a 4 year old would come up with!
hehe
Lol tapping is cool. But not that hard at all. I have alot of trouble sweeping though, for alot of people, it comes pretty natural and it pisses me off because I'm not one of them! 😂
Master of Puppets is actually the first full song I learned and I remember it beeing Easy
EDUSVIDEOOSXD You probably sucked and no one told you.
enlessdreams I wouldn't think so
***** lmao
EDUSVIDEOOSXD Then you're a guitar virtuoso m8
EDUSVIDEOOSXD I can play master of puppets... its really easy when you have practiced for more than 15 mins...
Me: "I wanna learn the solo from sweet child o mine"

Snow (Hey Oh)-
"Well at least the solo offers some relief, as it's as simple as one of fleas bass lines"
See the problem?
It's WatchMojo.com
@G1njaN1nja05 • Those at watchmojo have got to be the dumbest brain dead fucktards that ever lived all their lists are so wrong.
yeah um that line is sarcastic, they're saying even the solo is difficult.
Get the quote right.
"At least the solo provides some relief. In short, it's as difficult as your standard flea bass line."
I've seen everywhere that people say Snow is very difficult. However I have ease with it. At the same time I have the fingers of Robert Johnson. So I understand where some find it hard. But how is it that I can play it and not play solos? I honestly need help, been stuck in a rut for about 3 months now.
