I have lost 3 of my 4 guinea hens in 3 weeks from coyotes. Just 1 this morning, we had to put her down. I want to train my dogs to keep watch on my that i have left and 4 chickens
@SiliconBlake They ABSOLUTELY protect the birds from ALL predators, even the flying ones, which we have a lot of! Don't miss Season 2 - and the Short Clips are always done for humor...
We have 8 guinea fowl and five chickens, all hatched from late May to mid-June. We are planning to add a Greater Swiss Mtn. Dog to our family next spring. We picked the breed because they are supposed to be good overall farm dogs. Any suggestions on how we can properly train her to guard and herd the guineas? We'd appreciate any advice you could give us. Thanks! Btw, my two girls (5 and 7)love your Christmas singing guinea video. :D
@Niere922 It should be easy, since your dog has genetic herding skills AND will start around the birds as a puppy. You don't need to train him to protect - he'll do that instinctively. Just get him to accept the birds, which is a matter of exposing them to each other while you oversee his actions. Chastise him for chasing the birds. He should catch on really fast. You picked a good breed for the situation and task at hand.
Those are 2 amazing smart doggies!

115lb GSD?! Must be huge in real life!
Watched all 17 videos, enjoyed them a lot and learned a lot, thank you. Will the dogs actaully protect the birds from a predator such as a coyote?
Do you have any videos of the German shepherd actually herding the guinea fowl back to their coop?

That poor GSD, he is trying his best to round the outside of the flock and tend them like his ancestors would have but they keep running past him. lol
How do you train a dog to not attack the birds? I can't seem to get it across to my little dogs. :)
What hatchery did your Guineas originally come from? Do they reproduce enough to keep a sustainable group?
can guinea's lay eggs if they are kept in a 12x12 dog lot with a 6x10 chicken coop
Can GSD be a good LGD??
Good training ...bet the dog is tired at the end of the day.
