People today cannot fathom the depths of cruelty committed during the era of American slavery.
hey guys there’s a whole 40+ minute documentary about this in the smithsonian channel. really informative and sad
Such cool history. I didn't learn about it until I was in the Navy stationed there and visited the park.
One fact; it is impossible for a person to pass through a slave state, if he has eyes open, without beholding everyday cruelties repugnant to humanity.~ Lemuel Sapington (January 21, 1839)
This a sick country the fact that our truths is so distorted and hidden is just disgusting and sickening to me They were some resilient people and it’s amazing because to this day we still are with the racist things we face and endure everyday to this day
This is an amazing story! Thank you so much it needs more recognition!
clark you are awesome hey there’s a whole 40+ minute long documentary about this in the smithsonian channel (-:
@@wuahwuahwhore wow that's awesome! I'm saving it in my watch later for tomorrow since it's 3am! So excited to watch the documentary!
There needs to be a film made about this.
Wish there were more commentary from archeologist Dan Sayers. His work is quite interesting and hopefully one day will result in a massive find that shines light on this fascinating piece of American history.
America is the least “interesting”, lol. The only reason why America is so controversial is because of the CIA.
If you wanna learn “interesting” history about slavery, look at the barbary pirates.
It;s funny, I lived near the Great Dismal Swamp for years and never paid it any thought. I never knew that people lived there as a way to survive.
The amount of shrek references in the comment section is immeasurable
This is the first video that I haven't seen a dislike for. Good, because this is amazing! Animation, amazing! Story, amazing!
What is now regarded as sociopathic, degenerate, even demonic has historically been their cultural ethos...now today you understand their obession with bdsm, horror films, & other perversions.
Shrek is a national hero
I love this series. Please keep telling these kind of stories.
It is true and valuable lesson that mankind must not forget. What defenseless human beings had to endure in order to scape from the evil of other human beings
My ancestors were brave folks!
I LOVE YOU FOR SHARING YOU HISTORY..A STRONG BLACK MAN...THANK YOU
I had no idea the US had Maroons. I always thought it was only apart of Caribbean history and heritage
A lot of swamp maroon communities to place in all of the deep South from Alabama, Georgia, The Carolinas, and Louisiana to name a few. The Dismal swamp is actually a rare example in the northern U.S. were swamp maroon communities formed, but it's arguable the most famous besides the great "Negro Fort" in Florida.
A lot of slaves escaped to Florida and joined the Seminole too.
Reading "Where the Crawdads Sing", set in the swamps of North Carolina.
That tree island is amazing
NC had alligators too. Dangerous
SHREK: GO HIDE IN MY SWAMP
My house is where the Great Dismal Swamp used to be. The ticks and mosquitos in my backyard are insane
Très émouvant et instructif, merci
More history to learn! :)
This is amazing! I had no idea slaves escaped to live in this part of the south.
Amazing! I never heard of this (I'm not from the U.S.), but I now put some books on the subject on my Amazon list. Sooner or later, I'll read something about it.
Deuteronomy 28:15-68
That archaeologist's voice is perfect.
This kind of talked about it without talking about it. I thought there would be more explained but thanks for posting anyway
I came from Stephen Crane's The Monster.
History is a mixed bag, full of both beauty and shame!
Nature protected the enslaved from predators
They better run before Shrek comes back
Shrek probably yelled at the slave owners “get off my swamp!”
What an idiotic absurdity it is to say that earnest, persistent, uncompromising moral opposition to a system of boundless immorality is the way to strengthen it; and that the way to abolish such a system is to say nothing about it!~ William L. Garrison (April 23, 1858)
Smithsonian’s channel has a cool doc about these swamps
Yvonne Orji? Is that yo voice?!
Bro! i would of been so scared of gators. anything really! lol fr
I don't think gator live in the dismal swamp...or Virginia as a matter a fact.
I drove by this swamp while
I was traveling and always wondered what its story was
Sad
Oh so that's what "drain the swamp" means
Swamp Bring Me To Freedom!!!
Freedom Baby 😉😊😉😊
Is this where the Knight resistance was based?
Yo mate there are no poisonous snakes my man only venomous
now i get the family guy joke
I'm enlightened
A 1790 to 1825 nail. Wow whats that gunna do
Hello I love this video
I’m here after watching the movie on Netflix.
Looks like another settlement that needs your help
Remember this from APUSH
Damn ... what people would do for freedom.
How barbaric, insane and brutal chattel slavery was I don’t blame them. This version of slavery was never seen anywhere else. It was ran by white psychopaths with total lack of empathy and humanity
A great big story about what happened in a great dismal swamp!
Free state of jones
Swamp archeologist seems like a very memeable, Shrek-approved profession!
They survived the swamp because it’s similar to jungles in some modern African countries.
And STILL WE RISE 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
crazy to think that black people still didn't have their freedom until the '60s.
It wasn't just escaped slaves that lived there
Venemous snakes, I havent heard of poisonous snakes before.
*what are you Doing in my swamp?*
Looks like some Maine Justice
Wow
Can we make a movie about this, someone call WB
Around 6 resist people have watched and disliked
Sherk proceeds to fend of the slave owners.
Why is the narrator whispering
*Viva La Resistance!*
The dislikes came from slavers.
Hey whatever you are can you please explain to me how all the dislikes are from slavers (whatever that is) they all are dead just saying.
Kalz
Shrek?
Guys stop making these shrek references its disrespectful
But it’s beautiful
I couldn't image having to go through the swamps mosquitoes and snakes and surviving out there for years
[insert shrek memes here]
-insert shrek meme here-
Some reason this is hard to watch and accept. This is a very sick country with a extremely sick demonic history. I pray judgment comes fast
I want a black archeologist to do it from a African perspective
is it
swampy?
Damn shrek is an even better man than before!
What about all the slaves still being sold in arab nations across the world. Why don't you highlight that?
@@Draco187._ Modern slavery and liberals moaning about less than 1% of the white pop owning slaves 200 years ago. Whataboutthatism.
*_swomps r durty tho_*
This wasn’t a great video, it felt like he was saying the same thing over and over again and never went into detail. So the tldr of this video is
Slaves ran away from terrible conditions to live in a hazardous swamp
Robert Bell hey there’s a whole 40 plus minute long documentary about this in the smithsonian channel they get into greater detail there (-:
1. you can be a slave and an idiot
2. yours is an opinion just as much as mine
3.90% of this video is the same guy saying the swamp sucks but not as much as being a slave, and slow pans of the swamp
4. i like Great Big Story's videos, this is just one with very little substance
Cajuns did it for a few hundred years
@@omartistry Cajuns are Creoles! But they separated from us Creoles in the 60s and 70s
@@omartistry They are orginally from Acadia (Canada) yes. They are mixed with Houma-Creoles which is a faction of Louisiana-Choctaw Creoles!
Anyone regardless of race or ethnicity born into colonial Louisiana before 1803 is CREOLE!

First 😎
Shrek is our lord and savoir for rescuing those slaves.
Watermelons are abundant on swamps
Thats loot lake in the thumbnail
Yay shrek
481st 😂😂
it only worked because shrek helped them
I'm glad to hear that the swamp helped slaves escape. I think Harriet Tubman is one of the bravest Souls to ever walk on this planet.
unfortunately the underground railroad only went as far south as Portsmouth and that was the only route on it till you hit the northern border of Virginia where it branched off quite extensively to the north
