Just heard the news. He was an Edmonton legend but if you are of a certain age you’ve known of Joey all you life across Canada. This commercial was huge as a kid and I grew up in Ontario
Joey Moss is truly an inspiration and symbol for inclusion among persons with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Thank you Joey for showing the public that persons with developmental disabilities are valuable assets to the workplace and community. His silent commitment to inclusion will never be forgotten.
Yeah....we all did. If you ever dropped the ball, on an important play, or simply tripped over something, you got the "gretzeeeee" call directed at you.
Guys...this isn't the original Getzkee! commercial...there is one before this where the video freezes on the Getzkee! part...am I the only one who remembers that?
Kenny Hotz used the name Joey when they filmed the "Who is the Biggest Idiot" episode. Anywho, I didn't know he was with the team for so long. He doesn't look old now either.
Last time I saw an Oilers game, he was behind the bench. The Edmonton Oilers made good on their promise to Wayne to make sure Joey had a job for the rest of his life. I read Wayne’s book years ago. When the Oilers were beaten by the Islanders, Wayne was pretty bummed out. Joey sat beside Wayne, put an arm around Wayne and said, “It’s going to be okay.” Pretty awesome, Joey!
I'm so guilty and ashamed to say this, but as a child, I so remember saying "Joey" or "Gretzky" when someone did something stupid. We do such foolish things as children. Seeing this video now, Joey is amazing!!!!
I did this too but I can now simultaneously see the humour in it while appreciating the support needed to invest in opportunities for the mentally challenged. And yes, let's face it, mentally challenged people are funny.
I was a newborn. Would have been great to be coherent and a child during the 80’s. I have no recollection of the 80’s I was 3 in 1989. Mind you the 90’s were also a great decade to grow up in.
Wow an amazing story of Joey Moss that's great to hear about a special needs person who's treated as an individual. I'm a Yotes, and Flames fan yes, and do have great deal of respect for Edmonton Oilers to hiring an amazing worker like Joey. I don't see this regularly. There should be more Joey Moss to work in sports organizations
This probably turned out to be harmful for the image of the mentally challenged. Calling someone a "Joey" was synonymous with insulting someone's intelligence. Or scratching behind your ear yelling "Gretzkeeeeeee".
yes it took the country by storm. it went to the SUPREME COURT . we were ordered to stop doing it or they would lock us all down for the rest of our lives... relax.. no one got maimed. I think our care and understanding of those afflicted is ten times better than it ever was. because of teams like the Edmonton Oilers and Eskimos! yeah i SAID IT MY ESKIMOS! WE LOVE YOU JOEY!! YOU ARE THE TRUEST HERO!
The "R" word was considered taboo in Canada since the mid 1980s. When I went to North Carolina in 1999 to compete for Canada at the "1999 Special Olympics World Games" as a Powerlifter, I was appalled to see the "R" word used often to describe persons with developmental disabilities and the locals pride in using it. I admit that it made me sick to my stomach at the Americans for being way behind the times. Back in 1999, if you said the "R" word in Canada, you would be charged for a hate crime. It was the movie, "Tropic Thunder", and its liberal use of the dreaded "R" word when groups representing persons with developmental disabilities, including Special Olympics International, started a campaign to end the word.
Because of this ad for years and years any time someone would do something stupid or goofy as kids we'd always say "Gretzky" like Joey Moss. (I know he is saying Taxi but as kids we thought he was saying Gretzky.)
I just finished Walter Gretzky's book. Wayne's dad Walter's sister Ellen had very low-functioning Down's and was cared by his grandmother her entire life, and then his parents when his grandmother died. That whole family was decent as hell.
@trevolutionn I'm pretty sure Joey says "Taxi"..It's a joke he's playing on Wayne,Pretending to high five and then hailing a cab."Taxi" has become part of the vernacular here in Edmonton.
I was at an Oilers game, went to sit in his seat during the warm up which was two seats down from mine and he freaks out at me, I don't blame him though I just said sorry and moved down, it was funny cause he was VERY pissed, he even gave me the look like I was his worst enemy
RIP Joey. You were apart of all our (Canadian) lives. I was proud to be Canadian back then. See you in the sky. 🍻 “And now, Garfields Halloween Special on FOX 29 Buffalo”.......,
@Retrontario Taxi or not, this still isn't the original commercial. The original commercial had a bunch of other people in the locker room, and the image was frozen on joey's hand behind his ear and Wayne wasn't doing it either. This commercial is making reference to the original one. Don't get me wrong, you still did a great job pulling this one out dude...but another one is out there, i'm sure of it.
@trevolutionn Mine too!Little did Joey Moss & Wayne Gretzky realize that Joey's hand gesture while shouting "GRETZKY" created a monster in the school halls and yards all across Canada!
@bluenotejazz exactly....my older cousin used to call me "gwet-ski!" whenever i was being "retarded", I tormented my little brother with the same taunt. I don't think we got the message they were trying for.
The March of dimes. This was right long before we had comedy shows that exploited disabled persons. By the time when 1990 arrived: we started having comedians who were mimicking the disabled.
Hilarious. I remember this commercial back in the 80's. Us kids would tease each other with the "Taxi" comment when someone was acting stupid. Interesting to note, down sydrome was not as prevalent as it is today. Medical fact ladies, the older you are when you have kids, the odds grow for you to have your own little "Joey".
Joey showed the world that people should be judged by their abilities not their disabilities. He's on your team now God. Take good care of him.
RIP Joey Moss... such a huge Oiler fan and Gretzky knew him 35 years...
Just heard the news. He was an Edmonton legend but if you are of a certain age you’ve known of Joey all you life across Canada. This commercial was huge as a kid and I grew up in Ontario

Man...that Wayne's a class act
RIP joey! You were an will always be the best oiler we ever had! Your a legend my friend🏒🥅🙂

Joey in an inspiration, everytime I see him I get tears...he shows everyone give people a chance, ALL PEOPLE!!
Now i remember why we did that head rubbing back in the 80s
he still works in the dressing room
no he doesnt, he died
@@staticon1976 Comment was from 5 years ago
Joey will always be the eternal Captain of the Edmonton Oilers.
Rip to the real great one!🙏
Joey folds towels better than I do.
RIP Mr. Joey Moss
Oh man RIP buddy. We all loved Joey
I never seen this commercial, or forget if I did, but sure remember people all the time, in that era saying Gretzyeeeee, as a troll taunt as a kid.
Yeah....we all did. If you ever dropped the ball, on an important play, or simply tripped over something, you got the "gretzeeeee" call directed at you.
RIP Joey Moss
Rest easy Joey thank you!
FINALLY FOUND IT. HAHAHA LOVE IT
RIP Joey
Absolute legend

Just came to watch this. Gretzky is on Theo Von's podcast today.
Hi joey
:( ❤️
Oh this is the Joey, that Wayne referred to after he broke the points record.
@iduriduridur the memory cheats my friend. And he's actually saying TAXI.
Why is he saying taxi?
@fetchy15 I was just about to point that out!
This "Taxi" shtick must be an inside joke if that's actually what Joey Moss said.
What is Joey saying at the end when he scratches his head?
"Taxi!"
@@Retrontario haha cool!

Awesome that he is till working and involved in the community. No one ever turned him into a victim.
So touching.

GRETZKY

Learn English LMAOOO MY DAD DID THE EXACT SAME THING AS A KID
Have you seen teens with all their internet crap! Ke ke and so on.... Sometimes you just have to lol Gretzky!!!!!
I remember all of the guys doing the "GRETZKY!!!" thing with our hand and head. Such a classic ad!
Likewise, we used to say "Gretzky!" too for the same reason. We were innocent kids. 1986 was so long ago. :(
So many of us in English speaking Canada did the same.
Totally- it was part of our vocabulary all the time
I was a newborn. Would have been great to be coherent and a child during the 80’s. I have no recollection of the 80’s I was 3 in 1989. Mind you the 90’s were also a great decade to grow up in.

Joey Moss thank you very much for proving everyone that people with people with disability can do anything they put their desire to.
Rest in peace Joey. :(

Today this would be considered offensive but different times right. The idea was pure and that's all that mattered
It was never meant for people to make fun of, even though sadly, some did.
you do amazing work, thank you, it is all so golden:)

The golden days of hockey. God I remember this commercial. Sadly, we often made fun of it when we were children.
Yeah, people at my school did, too. Not nice.
Gretzky!!!! or Taxi!!!!!!! What Moss bellows was always a topic of discussion at my school.
I thought it was Yahtzee!
ok enough with this debate, does he say "taxi" ?

Retarded is a politically incorrect term nowadays, even though people and kids insult each other with its use to this day.
@trevolutionn the debate rages to this day....lol
I'm sorry, all, all, all of my friends, even the stupidly politically correct ones remembered this as TAXI !!!! Oh the memories.
oh ya. But i was too young to understand that Joey was special. I would have been 7 years old when that one was on tv.
