  • The Thing is a classic horror movie that has been adapted into a hidden role game with traitor mechanics. But, which one replicates the film better?
In Tabletop Grudge Match we compare both games with regards to components, game mechanics and table talk in a head to head battle.
    Let's get it on!!

Although a year ago, you forgot to mention how The Thing can be played at a lower player count and almost feels like a different game when you do, whereas Infection has 4 players minimum

    Great comparison.
After a session with both, it was Outpost 31 that I added to my collection. If I want something a bit heavier then Dead of Winter gets brought to the table.

Thank you. Dead of Winter is one I still need to try!

@@NinjaGeekGames one day I'll be able to get eleven of us around the table and play the Waring Colonies version, but between jobs/babies/etc that hasn't happened yet.

@@NinjaGeekGamesThat might be because - by your own admission - you improperly exposed your “Thing” at the gaming table… 😉
Joking aside, this video was a succinct, humorous & very well explained comparison of these two competing games. Many thanks & very well done. 😊👍

I've only played Infection at Outpost 31 so far. It was very fun but I felt like something was missing, like perhaps the ability to reveal as the Thing, or to be able to freely move around the compound and assimilate other players.
I can see that The Thing fills that hole pretty well. I'd say the only downsides to The Thing (on a first glance, without having played it) would be the bad rulebook and the heavier setup/complexity for game nights with people who don't usually play board games.
Nonetheless I think both games probably deserve a spot in Social Deduction fans' collection. If limited by space, which one to pick might depend on whether you prefer lighter games or having more choices.

I think you've nailed it on the head! Both good games but The Thing does fill gaps (and rulebook isn't great).

fair point but I always thought the thing would be excellent as a deduction based card game even and outpost 31 basically works this mechanic into a really cool board game design. I was torn between the two but chose this when I could get hold of it again, I find these rules complex enough so would rather stick with them than the thing if that's even more involved.

I was thinking of an Among Us board game and both of these use mechanisms that wouldve been used. Thank you for this video.

Great video... Of all the 3 games... Thing Board Game, outpost 31 and Who goes there... our group strongly agrees with the review... The Thing Board games really captures the feel of the movie, and you truly feel like your characters are doing things, supplies are dwindling and suspense is building... Outpost 31 is faster, and more of a quick gateway game for folks that aren't big into gaming... Thanks for the review!

We found "Who goes there" was more about trying to find food and build materials... which makes for a great game... but not really what the classic movie was about... The Thing the BoardGame really capture the feel of the movie IMO!

You don't really have to have time to play them all.
They are all collectibles and may get off the market one day. True gems with a second hand value.

Honestly. I just wish these games would just go out to big box stores like the old days. This Kickstarter crap had honestly gotten so expensive and out of control.
