  • It's Adam Koralik here and today we're discussing the breaking news that Atari bought Intellivision. Yes, in 2024 this happened.
We'll also discuss the rumor, that Microsoft may be considering purchasing Valve (Steam) for 16 billion dollars. Not sure I believe that one.

I think you resumed the whole microsoft buying valve rumor pretty well, Gaben has no reason to let MS buy his company especially after he left MS to build Valve, on the other hand the possibility of whoever else owns the company wanting a quick buck and selling out is very likely.
The only saving grace in that scenerio would be an antitrust lawsuit keeping microsoft in check.

Microsoft have just released that figure publicly to test the water and see how/if Valve respond.
It’s a starting offer… what they would actually pay is something they will keep secret.
This is how negotiating a buyout always begins.
Our views as customers of either party are utterly irrelevant to this process, by the way.

While there is no true way to know the value. Bloomberg reported valve being worth about $7b in March of this year… so $16b doesn’t seem like a stretch.

@@happyspaceinvader508 I realize this. Yes, our views have no impact on the actual negotiation, assuming that even happens, but that's irrelevant to the point.
Objective reality, observing of it, & deduction aren't only open to people in a negotiation. I don't know where you're drawing this appeal to authority fallacy from.
And... Most germane, we have no current proof any offer or consideration was even made to begin with, making all of this moot.

Valve has no interest in selling. These are rumors for sure. *However* Xbox leadership IS trying to reach a deal to bring additional storefronts to Xbox, with Phil Spencer specifically mentioning Epic and Steam. That's probably what they're in talks about.
And yeah, I've heard Gabe owns 25% and agree he'd prefer to keep working. I also think, if this were true, there'd be another massive FTC suit. I don't think Microsoft has any appetite for another long and public fight.

  • @FSAPOJake

Valve would never accept a buyout from anyone, especially not Microsoft, at least not while Gabe owns the company. They're raking in billions of dollars every year and don't have to answer to shareholders. They're essentially immune to all the negative stuff affecting the industry this year and they have the goodwill of basically all PC gamers. It would be stupid to risk the great thing they have going on.
Also, Valve has been working tirelessly to try and separate PC gaming from Windows. The Steam Deck does exist as a handheld gaming PC that Valve can use to make a little extra money on from software sales, sure, but its main purpose is getting a Linux gaming PC into millions of gamers' hands, then Valve can use those gamers' experiences and data to improve Proton and thus make Linux gaming even more viable. Getting bought out by Microsoft, which I don't even think Microsoft has entertained at this time, would completely go against that.

Well, it would be nice to see the Amico get off the ground. Not surprising that Tommy is no longer in the picture. He was a good showman but nothing was ever going to get done with him at the helm. I do find it odd that there were a number of people comparing the situation with the Amico to the Atari console when it came down to promising vs delivering during the covid years. Yeah, Atari was making consoles while Intellivision was making excuses...and now Atari could be releasing the console that Intellivision promised. We'll see.

I'm so glad you mentioned that Valve is a privately traded company.
Say what you will about how digital and DRM works on Steam, the reason why it's the most used PC storefront is because Valve aren't controlled by investors. Meaning we get tons of pro consumer features and Valve is free to make decisions like saying no to an acquisition by Microsoft.
It's also important to know that Gabe Newell himself worked at Microsoft when he was young, and his whole viewpoint on Windows possibly being the only OS where games are available spurred his company into making Steam OS, Proton, and the Steam deck. I don't believe for a second that Valve would ever sell themselves out with him in charge, and I hope that continues because Microsoft is quickly showing that their company is where pro consumerism and creativity go to die.

    • @hypercynic
      @hypercynic Місяць тому +1

Microsoft gives way more freedom than most AAA publishers do so not sure where that idea is coming from that creativity goes to die there. Just look at how much happier every dev is from Activision-Blizzard since Microsoft took over and Bobby Kotick got kicked out. They may be incompetent and make horribly obtuse, unintuitive software, but I feel like they're one of the few people with lots of money that understands devs need creative freedom.

    • @hosenpfefferjones4524
      @hosenpfefferjones4524 Місяць тому +6

@@hypercynic Not sure where you got the idea that I said Microsoft gave developers no freedom. Microsoft has a history of shuttering studios in order to consolidate funds in order to drive their bigger projects. Shutting down Tango and Arkane Austin was part of that. Microsoft is a business that is controlled by their investors, and most investors want constant growth which is why bad live service games are everywhere now. They don't care about how good and creative their games are, so as a result, we've seen them do this time after time.
As for the freedom they give their developers? Microsoft's approach is totally hands off. There's no plan and no direction, so what you end up getting are a bunch of half baked and mismanaged games. They've had more than 10 years to get the Halo franchise back on track, yet they kept letting 343 drive it into the ground with half baked games and broken promises. I think the most telling moment is when they let a game like Redfall release. They should have delayed it and tried to salvage it, or cancelled it outright, yet they released it anyway so they could add it to their quantity over quality game library. I won't deny that there are a few good games here and there, but this hands off approach isn't working and is just leading to mediocre products and wasted money. So yeah, I'd say creativity absolutely goes to die there.

Microsoft better leave Valve alone, after the studio shutdowns, there are reasons why Gabe Newell left Microsoft to form Valve though, also Atari buying Intellivision, at least Intellivision is free from Tommy Tallarico.....? Also as someone who is studying game design in college (will be graduating later this year) I was planning on working at Mattel to convince them to buy Intellivision in order to get rid of Tommy Tallarico & preserve Intellivision & the games as well but since Atari bought Intellivision, I feel like even Atari needs some cleaning up since there was the Atari VCS disaster & the disgraceful NFT loot-boxes that was introduced in the brand's 40th anniversary, & of course Seamus Blackley (Xbox co-creator) tried to buy the Atari brand one day to not only release a new game console but to preserve the brand's history as well (which I have nothing against) but now that this happened, maybe I can convince Mattel to buy Atari (funny enough Mattel rival Hasbro used to own the Atari brand after the Jaguar failure & discontinuation) for Intellivision & maybe sell off Atari to Blackley, IDK how that's gonna work in the business side of things (minus the fact that I took a class on business this year) but who knows, there are many possibilities on how this will play out.
But still Microsoft BETTER stay away from Valve.
    FUCK Tommy Tallarico.
And both Atari & Intellivision needs to be preserved, not just for gaming but for history as well.

As someone with a Steam account worth like $30,000, I dunno. I wouldn't really care as long as they kept Steam working as it currently does. If they started making changes to the platform itself though, then it'd really worry me, as I find basically everything Microsoft to be terribly designed and incredibly obtuse in functionality generally. One of the main things I have always loved is that Steam generally keeps even inaccessible games playable for the people who originally bought them. Say the licensing for music in a game ends up running out and the game needs to be pulled from the store, well, Steam always at least keeps the game available for anybody who originally purchased it. Does/Would Microsoft keep up with this? They seem pretty keen on maintaining the various libraries of games in the Xbox catalogue so I have to imagine they wouldn't try to change how things work, but then, anything changing hands like this is bound to include some alterations.
It almost feels like I have stock in a company that might change hands all of a sudden. Never done shit with stocks and don't know anything about finances, so it's new to me. Hopefully, whatever happens, the gaming community doesn't suffer for it.

Atari owning the Intellivision IP is cool I guess since they seem to have actually done some good things the last few years and the Intellivison name was destroyed by the Amico which fortunately wont be able to use the Intellivison name anymore. I was never going to buy an Amico most likely so I have no stake in whatever happens to that.

As an idiot that "preordered" the Amico, i find it ironic how Tommy T crapped on Atari for the Atari VCS, yet the console came out and it's still being supported (ironically supported longer than Google Stadia). And now Atari owns the name and the IPs for it. As far as Valve, it would make sense but if it does happen, Microsoft would have to be very careful how they handle it because people would jump ship but on the PC, you don't have many real options. But would be cool to intergrade it into Xbox.

I don't think Microsoft could buy Valve legally. Valve makes software for their competitor, Linux, and Microsoft is pretty much still a monopoly. It looks like now that Linux is finally becoming viable as a gaming platform Microsoft wants to buy the company doing it. It's also bad for Microsoft, they should adapt, fix their problems. Also, some people put yearly revenue of Valve at around 10 billion, so I'd hold out for a LOT more. It should be the biggest acquisition in history. Unless Gabe runs for president and we see his taxes we'll never know how much Valve makes. Heck, it might turn out they make more than Microsoft. Not likely but it's possible Valve might make close to what Microsoft does, in which case it would be a merger, not a buyout.

I'll always release games on PC DVD as an alternative when I'm finished working on them, but if Microsoft buys Steam, I'd sooner make my own site for people to buy my games from than publish anything there. Not because I'm anti-Microsoft in any way, I just don't trust them anymore.

At the same time I'm no Microsoft fan either. Microsoft buying up all the game houses seems like it is really just after as many IP's as it can to block Sony from having acess to them.

Microsoft has proven they don't care about video games. It would be a huge mistake. In my opinion Valve selling out to Microsoft would be bad for everyone involved. The Microsoft that brought everyone xbox live and the 360 is all but dead. Look at their failures in hardware since the release of the 360 as well as their lack of vision in original IPs. They would do nothing but milk valve and destroy the already less-than sturdy infrastructure that Steam as a platform has established. Imagine a world where every single game has their own launcher like with what EA did or Ubisoft. Microsoft loves those publishers and they'd encourage those practices with every game/service they could until Steam is just a launcher for other launchers for AAA studios because Microsoft doesn't support Indie games (well) because there isn't enough money in it for them.

I can see the more likely scenario being that Microsoft opens up the Xbox to the point where they allow Steam onto the console, which would basically turn the Xbox into a PC with a UI that works for TV use. I would imagine that would boost a lot of interest on the hardware side and it doesn't conflict with Xbox's vision for gamepass. If anything it might help subscriptions grow since they'd be effectively attracting a lot of people into the Xbox ecosystem if it was Steam compatible. It would also help bolster Xbox's position against Sony as being "the more open" alternative to Sony and Nintendo's walled gardens.
