Will The Raf Simons Archive Redux Destroy The Resell Market?

- Raf Simons Archive Redux, which will see the designer reissuing 100 classic pieces on the occasion of its quarter-century anniversary this year. “These garments reflect the shifts of time, highlighting pieces that have an instinctive relevance to the world of today,” reads the press release issued Tuesday morning. “There is no hierarchy or system to the choices: they are pure creative decisions.” In other words: This isn’t just about playing the hits. Perhaps you’ll see coats from the landmark Fall 2003 New Order collection, but you’re just as likely to see the flowing trouser from Fall 2005’s History of My World-one is a foundational grail-culture piece, but the other mischievously recharted the menswear silhouette at the peak of the skinny-trouser fervor.

Sorry guys I forgot to mention that they did say they are planning to release the collection in December 2020.

It wont. The products will be released in March 2021. So that this collections coincides with the 25th anniversary of Raf's label

Just as bad as the people who only wear it because he wore it in my book.
Raf Simons is a rarity. He knows what he see and is willing to put out as he see it. Regardless if others don't yet get it.
Great Genius Artist.
Raf Simons Archive Redux - I'll have to see what he is putting out in his new release.
1950’s fashion is my favorite. So many people are into late nineties styling right now. I feel it is just a trend/phase for many of the buyers of these vintage Raf pieces. I’m glad Raf Simons will be able to capitalize on this.
It’s definitely a trend to solely focus on a certain group of designers for the archive type of people. It’s all about Helmut Lang, Raf Simons and Undercover for these people which is cool but there is way more to fashion than those three brands. They act like these brands influenced the whole current fashion scene.
I don’t think this will have that a big of an impact on the market, much like how the Helmut Lang Reeditions didn’t affect archive HL prices. The “real collectors” will write this off as a cash grab and continue to buy and sell the original versions for absurd prices.
This could be true but the only difference between this and the Helmut Lang Re-editions is when the Helmut Lang brand did it, the brand was absolutely washed and no one cared about what they were releasing anyway. Even till now the brand is still washed and a complete shell of itself. Raf’s house is still going strong and he’s been an active designer through all these years so I just feel like this release will have way more impact than the Helmut one.
Definitely supporting the redux. Great Vid as always bro!
That hypebeast mistake was atrocious imo. Especially considering that their reader base isn’t necessarily the most knowledgeable outside of reading hypebeast itself.
I'll be dropping in RAF Simons redux pieces with Yeezy gap
🤣🤣
Looking forward to that raf Video 😊😊😊
Stay tuned...
I wonder if I’ll be able to buy these pieces, I hope resellers don’t take everything
I have a feeling they will
@@FashionRoadman I would. it is a great business move. Yes, you won't be able to get it but that is what Raf is counting on. The collection is too much in the first place. Great marketing though.
Fashion Journalism done right in 2020 : The Fashion Archive. I applaud your work🙌🏾. Love from NY!

I am a huge fan of Raf Simons, I still can decide if I like the Redux. In one side I might be able to get one of the garments I love (for example the New Order/Joy Division Parkas). But on the other side, I am worried that Raf Simons will become a Hype thing and loose it’s essence. I hope that the people who buy from the Redux are truly fans of the brand and not only hypebeasts that don’t understand the brand and want to look like A$AP Rocky/Ian Connor.
Unfortunately Raf has already become a hype thing due to influencers and celebrities all talking about him. Just remember when the Raf simons Stan smiths came out and you had all these kids filming their shoes saying please don’t touch my Raf. If you truly love it you shouldn’t let those people affect your view on the brand. It’s the same way some people buy Louis Vuitton for hype and status whereas others are interested in the more artistic side of the brand buying old Marc Jacobs LV stuff and wearing Nicolas Ghesquiére LV ready to wear pieces.
I like the idea of a company bringing back parts of prior collections. It’s a smart business move because a lot of fans that enjoy previous collections now will have the opportunity to purchase the garments/accessories. I can see some backlash coming from the resell market (that are selling the same ones that will be included in the redux) and prices dropping because of less demand, but it’ll eventually balance back out.
I miss when Raf looked forward. It seems like he got caught up in the hype and he is feeding his hypebeast clientele that has discovered the brand around 2014.
Instead of Archive Redux, why not propose something similar to his late 00's/early 10's collections: clothes for a more grown up clientele.
Will it destroy the resell market? I don't think so. He was a very confidential designer in his early days and this is really the first opportunity to get those clothes on a larger scale.
Raf has definitely already become a hype brand because I know so many people that literally are stans of people like playboy carti, ASAP Rocky, Ian Connor etc and any brand they wear people think it’s suddenly God tier. It’s sad to see but that’s just how it goes. I feel like if you truly love the work of Raf you shouldn’t let those people affect your view on the brand. Any brand that becomes big will be hyped to some extent. It’s the same way some people buy Louis Vuitton for hype and status whereas others are interested in the more artistic side of the brand buying old Marc Jacobs LV stuff and wearing Nicolas Ghesquiére LV ready to wear pieces.
I Think looking back is part of rafs brand identity...
@@FashionRoadman Exactly. I started to really love Raf's work around 2007 and I think the evolution from maybe 2007 to 2010 was very interesting. By doing a very grown-up fashion, he maybe took more risks. There's nothing more modern today than his past work because he was in a forward thinking vision. It was also at that time that he started to wear Prada, so his aspirations changed. His FW2010 was amazing! His work feels very "now" unfortunately for me. That's why i loved his menswear for Calvin Klein. It proposed a new vision for menswear. It was very Helmut Lang (down to the presentation) but it looked fresh.
I don't mind brands going big, I have more problems when I see that influence the creativity in a heavy sense. I don't see any compromises in Nicolas or Marc's clothes.Yes, they are doing sneakers, handbags but the clothes feels still very HF. The same for Dries or Rick. Their aesthetics have changed but you don't see that disconnect you see with Raf. I know a lot of Raf die-hard clients who were happy about him doing CK because they did not recognized themselves in his recent fashion. I hope that designing for Prada will make him look forward again.
Well, he's had his namesake brand for 25 years now. What more can he do? He was prepared to call it quits a couple years back but was convinced to stay longer. I feel it's simply his time to retire.
Crazy how people will try and bot the redux products I’d be so mad😭😭😭
The BOTS will be working overtime
This video should be archive, cause Ayo got the Durag on. I swear man if I see TheFashionArchive with 360's, hurricane readings🌀, light tides, lake ripples, waves🌊🌊. CSM Shawties watch out, he on one.

Love this not only because I don't like resale but also because this will deter people from buying his pieces because they're 'worth a lot'
I totally agree. It’s so funny how the “purists” are going mad and saying it’s watering down the brand. If they were so worried they would’ve had issues with the recent Raf collections which reference his old collections.
I had no idea who Raf Simons was until I watched this video. Thanks to you and the casual, I get to know about designers that I wouldn’t have known on my own @fashionarchive
Should be a whole live stream topic cl
i really enjoyed how you gave different perspectives no the issue, really gave me a general understanding of it👍
This video has been really helpful, thanks mate
i appreciate your hard work on doing serious research before making a video to public! thats very very important! not a lot of people do what u did! audience need someone like u ! I'm from hong kong:)
I'd be surprised if the general population even gets a fair chance to acquire these. It's incredibly tough to grab your favourite shoes or other random drops, let alone 100 of some of the most archival holy grails in the fashion community. These will go straight to archivists, influencers, bots and people with connections. Really nice of the Raf Simons house to do this but the disgusting cycle that the community finds itself in will keep on revolving - nothing will change.
I totally agree
Unlike random drops, the price of entry for any Raf Simons piece is expensive. Most designer collections go on sale. Doing a 100 piece drop I feel that someone will be able to cop something. However, it may not be what you really want.
in the raf music video it is also formatted like aw 95/96
Oh yeah I did leave that out
I want the Virginia creeper jumper but if it sells out super fast or it’s very expensive I’m passing even though it’s sick
Yeah I might have to pass on a lot of it if the BOTS come out to play
Are there waves under that durag ? 😳😳😳😳😳😳

Yes! Hell fucking yes! Bring on Redux. I’m so over these vintage shops and bourgeois hypebeast pawning their pieces for peanuts.
I cant wait
Great information as always
"Raf Simons, Rick Owens usually what I'm dressed in"
Sorry, I had to do it. I like the idea of them just re releasing old stuff. Won't stop the resellers but I just hope will get in the hands of people who like the stuff for what they are,not just for the hype.
Very happy for Redux, to at least have an opportunity to get a piece, but competition against resellers & bots is gonna be maddd tough
Congrats on your Showstudio panel! More panel discussions in the future. 😁😁😁
Merci ❤️
Thank you for the video 👍
Well guys, here we are. The collection just dropped and it wasn't that difficult to buy. Has anybody copped something ?
I find it really interesting to see what will happen with the other companies if they are urged to do the same (most likely not). Another plus side it will educate others more about the history of a brand with the inherent hype this will cause.
This is very true
Hi, i would like to know where you found the redux book. Thanks for answering. 😊
Seeing the images that leaked in hft it was interesting to see them not go for all hype stuff.
Great video! Where did you find the print out of the redux book by the way? I’m not trying to drop $800 on the hardcover hahaha.
Ngl my friend has it so I scanned it and printed it out so I could read it.
Check out @archive.pdf on insta I think they may have it on their website
Different markers but amongst sneakerheads, whenever a retro happens the OG/older releases appreciate for the reason that they're OG. Would've thought that it'd be the same case amongst the 'real' collectors...
We shall see, I myself am definitely not a Raf collector but speaking for some of my friends who have loads of his pieces they have said that the demand might go down but ultimately they know that of course the originals will always sell for more than the re-issued pieces.
Great channel!
Thanks ❤️
mixing up the headwear - I feel like the best example to reference is the reissue Helmut pieces, they sold for a lot less than the actual archive pieces but I feel like it didn't destroy the value of the actual older pieces. Tho I feel like to some extent Raf seems like hes really interested in whats current. All that said, i know i've seen the roll neck turtle go for like $50 so maybe hes showing off some "slept" on pieces
I also like the fact that Raf said that he will definitely showcase some lesser known pieces. I’m actually looking forward more to that than the stuff everyone know about and all the stuff that everyone writes about.
@@FashionRoadman yeah 4 sure I'd love to see what Raf wants to share, maybe it will be a reflection of the pieces that have impacted him the most rather than the 1s everyone knows and talks about Rn
It could actually possibly help the archive resale market... he re releases classic pieces but it might just raise interest in the originals
This is also a definite possibility

Where can i find the PDF for the Redux book? Also, where did you get your shirt?
Where did you find the pdf version of Redux? I can't find it
I find it funny that they didn’t expect this 90percent of brand s do this or something similar for an important anniversary
Man with a 30k Raf Bomber in shambles.
the best part is searching for months finding the right raf piece and saving up for it... the redux is not the move
If you think about it the redux isn’t bringing back everything for starters and either way you have to think that not everyone can afford to buy things on the resell market for upwards of $5000 and some of the most loyal Raf fans I know who know the references to all his collections will finally have a chance to get their hands on something (if they have a bot). Granted, a re-issue will never have the same impact or cultural relevance as an original but we have to see both sides of the situation.
So you're telling me I have a chance to purchase the Toosie Slide bomber?
Where is the intro clip from
helmut’s basically doing the same thing with their recollection and no ones bitchin about it. Resellers gotta stop crying and let other people have their fun
All this will do is turn RAF into another reseller hypebeast type brand like any hyped "streetwear" brand. No one besides people who know nothing about raf except ozweegos and "please dont touch my raf" will get their hands on anything, and i can guarantee you that at least one person will style one of the redux pieces with either off-white, gucci, supreme, or louis vuitton
Raf has definitely already become a hype brand to an extent because I know so many people that literally are stans of people like playboy carti, ASAP Rocky, Ian Connor etc and any brand they wear people think it’s suddenly God tier. Oh yes it’s definitely a cash grab to a certain extent

raf garments are works of art... originals over prints all day in my opinion
Ultimately the originals will always hold more weight than a Re-issue in any case.
why can we buy the redux
Please leave me a comment if you happen to be interested in a brand new RAF SIMONS spring summer 2007 collection white pants. Size on label is 48 IT but I think it is between 46 and 48 as the legs are very fitted/tight (ankle area). I have never worn them, just tried at home twice for a minute. Thanks. Shipping from Europe.
Where can i find the pdf of the book?
Check @archive.pdf on Instagram and it should be on their website
I'm new to "fashion", but have always like clothes. I don't think you need to know the history of a brand to like their clothes. That's another form of gatekeeping.
I've watched like all your videos just realised I've never heard you say "mandem" or "ting"
Loool because I’m not speaking slang on my channel. That is more for when I’m talking to my friends. UA-cam is my portfolio as a journalist so you definitely won’t hear me using much slang unless it’s a livestream.
It’s also funny how the most hyped collections were about anarchy and now they rerelease the stuff so that „anybody“ can buy sth from it, kind of ironic right? 😂 Although i don’t think that’s the intention
I feel the same way when Demna Gvasalia makes collections that are a commentary on modern day capitalism and the medium he uses to express it which is Balenciaga (A huge business under a huge conglomerate with financial targets to hit) it all does become very ironic,
how do we find out when they drop? I would love to try and cop a piece. Is there any estimate as to how many of each item they will have in stock? Gotta beat the bots >.
I have no idea about the stock but the release is in December 2020
I’m not even sure what’s the hype around Raf. Most i know is that he was influenced by punk and reflects that in his older collections.
He designed great clothes. It'll look better to you if you see it in the upcoming redux collection.
7 7 great as in popular or culturally great?
@@trenhleko3706 popoluar, trendy
It depends what you look for in designer I guess. Raf simons is not the John Galliano or Schiaparelli type creating new silhouettes and people who have mastered fashion design in terms of form. What people respect about Raf Simons was his unique way of referencing and the fact that his work was so focused on a melting pot of punk, politics and youth culture at a time when young people were not seen by most designers as intelligent enough to understand the world of high fashion. Raf’s clothes were cultural phenomenons and there is always this unique aura around everything he creates. In fact it’s because of people like Raf Simons that kids are getting into fashion at a younger age and then eventually learning about other designers like Schiaparelli, Dior, Balenciaga, Lanvin etc.
He has also proven himself time after time. I remember when he went to Jil Sander and the narrative was “who is this men’s streetwear designer who thinks he can design women’s clothes,” but he lived up to the billing and proved himself.
UPDATE: Every piece has leaked with pictures
RAF in some way shape or form has been reusing graphics and such so I doubt it will bc the elitists will carry selling for stupid prices
2nd 😎
Resale killed raf simons for me. I used to like some of his pieces but he’s like the Yankees of fashion now. Everyone just gets on board without knowing the history. Sadly if people are dumb enough to pay $2,000 plus for something you can’t be mad at someone for taking advantage of that. Maybe because I’m a designer myself and wouldn’t pay $2,000 for anyone’s work knowing I can do it as well.
Sadly for Raf this aint really helping his followers, but the resellers. Which are about to make a lot money
I saw "Raf", on a segment of BOF talk and he is quite the snot and a reckless elitist. I wonder what other personality oddities he might later unpack, despite the hype surrounding his design talents.
Could you send me a link? I’ve watched many documentaries that featured him and he never came across this way
It was the one with Tim Gunn, I saw it a while ago and it really stuck in my head he had done a mini doc of his life with his partner & their new house whatever l believe the talk was a promo around that. Love what you do .
Destroy ?????? Market ?!??!??! Surely you exaggerate ...
It’s a question haha
It will be a success but it's not for me.
Of all the Prada die hards I've spoken to nobody is excited for Raf to come onboard.
Hope it fails Miuccia 4 ever.
What is the reason why they don’t like Raf at Prada I’m just wondering? It is strange that Raf is going there tbh because Prada is not a brand that needs help as the women’s collections have always been consistent and amazing. The only place I think Raf can make his mark at Prada is with the menswear.
@@FashionRoadman Its as simple as people I know are happy the way menswear is, and are affraid Raf may change that. Potentially he could elevate menswear but I guess we get look in next week.
So If The Devil Wears Prada I’m interested to see what he does but he better not mess it up or it could be a disaster for his legacy, especially coming off the whole CK205 saga.
@@FashionRoadmanHe may prove me wrong but im still put of as I see him more of a designer for younger customers these days.
HE GETS TO MUCH CREDIT FOR WHAT HE DOES
This is very interesting and I definitely want to know your opinion on this. What makes you say that?
@@FashionRoadman First and foremost, my wife and I think your Genius. The next Andre L.T. your knowledge...He's Brilliant designing for his line. Solid message. When he went to Jill, he changed it to pretty basic/class is pcs with a slight twist. Then off to Dior. He flattened the avant-garde glamour John was giving to skinny boring party dresses. Why did they everbring him to U.S. to finish nailing Calvin's name to the dumpster. This really bothers me. Prada. She has her thing going on. She's consistent, quirky, sleek at times, but it's Prada. I'm sure he will water it down to basics. Prada's prints in Club Monaco silhouettes. I can't wait to tell my wife you connected with me. I'm a designer here in NY. Insta Epp erson or eppersonstudio.com
Would be great to connect again. Be Blessed.E
Epperson Epperson I definitely agree with a lot of what you’ve said and I just checked out your brand, it’s amazing!
I think what makes Raf Simons great has nothing to do with fashion design / his design skill. The issue I have with young people these days is that because they’ve been told by others that Raf Simons is great they don’t even know why he’s great so just assume he’s a master of every aspect of fashion.
To me what makes Raf Simons amazing is his ability to reference subcultures and timeframes as well as market his brand in a way that will relate to the youth. This is why I love his brand because it’s served as a mood board for all his creative ideas and he does come up with some amazing and unique designs from his work with Adidas to some new boot silhouettes that are always innovative. In recent times I’ve been critical of him at his own brand because he has started to reference his old work so much that it just seems like he’s not putting effort into it (this may be attributed to the fact he has been so busy working for other brands).
I think his peak for me at other houses was Jil Sander only because the heritage and aesthetic of Jil Sander was built on minimalism so it wasn’t out of place for Raf Simons to design clothes in that way. I definitely agree with you about Dior, it did not come close to John Galliano’s work and it was very obvious. At Calvin Klein I wasn’t too fussed about it because CK doesn’t have a history of creating supremely innovative designs so Raf Simons taking elements of American culture and putting a european spin on it was very interesting in my opinion (fireman jackets, sweaters with famous American cartoon character prints, Collegiate logos etc). The main issue with his stuff at CK was the price point, it made absolutely no sense. Raf Simons was trying to make CK known in the high fashion cycle but his clothing at CK cost more than all of the most established fashion houses (Prada, Gucci, Dior, Saint Laurent etc) so I knew it wouldn’t sell and the whole ship would sink just based off of that.
The Prada appointment doesn’t make a lot of sense on face value because it’s not like Miuccia is struggling. Prada and it’s little sister “Miu Miu” have been consistently good since the 90s (excluding the menswear which for most brands is an after thought anyway). At first I was happy about the Raf Simons appointment because I thought he was going to add new life to the menswear. So you can imagine my shock when I ended up finding out he’s actually a co-creative Director of Prada, I have no idea what he’s going to add to Prada womenswear when it’s already so amazing and has had a very distinct aesthetic and message for so many years. I guess we just have to wait and see what happens but I definitely hope Miuccia isn’t handing over the reigns to him just yet.
@@FashionRoadman Your great at what you do.
who cares about the resell market
I don’t, but a hell of a lot of people do. Trust me... 🤣
