    Once I learned to put more attention in my mirrors and on my truck (instead of who's watching me) it got just that easy for me too. In the beginning I distracted myself so much worrying about how long it would take me, who's watching and recording me, too embarrassed to G.O.A.L. Once I gained the experience to relax, my bp went down tremendously. Thanks to watching the positive, better-skilled drivers in videos like this one! Thanks!!!

To all that think its easy or could do better, you are idiots, only the crickets are listening to you. Maneuvering a rig isn't a frigging game, or a pissing contest. You can clearly recognize a trucker from a 4 wheeler when they comment saying what's the big deal, that looks easy, 1st the trailer may be 53" but the total length far exceeds 73" and if you drive standard equipment, you know that bigger or longer wheel based trucks don't have the luxury of shorter wheel based trucks when backing into docks or truck parking, this style truck would never be able to back into the Flying J in Dallas, there isn't enough room for him to maneuver period, but in this scenario, he had room in front of him, but backing is what separate the boys from the men, or girls from the women, as a trainer you have no idea how many cocky students used to backing daddies 10" trailer connected to a crew cab pickup, quickly realize that out here there is little room for error. 2nd it was amazing to watch him back into that spot because you rarely see these units parked at truck stops, rest assure he won't be there over night considering his nose is going to stick out more, hence making it a easy target for new drivers coming in to shutdown for the night. 3rd 90° plus angles in trucking is basically considered jackknifing when backing people and if you can do this in your sleep, I don't want to be the truck parked next to you when you setup for your spot, bottom line it is no easy task ever, everyday is a different day..

    It maybe commonplace when you're an owner operator for 30 years as my dad was, but for the vast majority of people this is quite impressive, especially for someone that doesn't have a CDL license. I'm a Class A CDL myself and I drive the salt shakers for State highways I am still quite impressed when someone puts a 53 footer in like that. It takes some skill and a lot of practice. Well I kinda laughed reading comments. You can tell most have never backed a spread axle trailer in their life. 53 foot spread and looks like about a 280 maybe 300 inch wheelbase tractor. Oh the comment about truck driving jobs in America, there sure are but they don't pay for crap. Most union jobs are history. As far as the big yellow truck, well you are looking at a mans dream. Worked a lot of years before he could own something like this. My hats off to him or her could be a her. Years ago I saw a lady that ran out of CA with a Kenworth conventional painted like a leopard (animal in Africa) now that woman could drive! As for the one person remark about this equipment well apparently that person probably only drove company equipment so I will let it drop right there. That person would never understand even if I told them. It would be my guess the person behind the wheel of this unit is a business person, driver and does have their head in the game. Trucking in this country, for the owner operator has really been tough. They get no help from anyone, states target them for fines and really the Federal Government does not want you in business any way. Me the feds took me out of business long ago when they started hooking things up to the computer, databases, fuel databases. The government just knew I could not legally log it time wise anyway. Sold out and did something else for a living. I will say this, when you go to your grocery store look at the produce at Walmart. It has been beat up in a truck. Is it all the drivers fault? Not really, that is what is up with the long wheel base tractor, spread axle trailer and it is all on air ride. Not all air rides are the same. The good riding air rides get cashey. When you can haul eggs from Esterville, IA to LA and never break an egg that says something. Produce hauling is an art to because more often that not you have different produce in the trailer, all need special handling. Reefer business is different and is a lot of stress and hours (if you are good at it, it is). Maybe some of the old timers are still around they may remember my truck, on the bug shield was painted Phantom 309, Black RW600 Superliner with that V4 motor in it. Anyway that is what I told Steve (state trooper in Utah) that clocked me going up hill when I was dino testing the engine. I know, he did not believe it was a V4 either. LOL
    Someone asked the cost. Well I have not kept up to date on prices but the tractor about $160,000, and the trailer I would guess be close to $80,000.00 or $90,000.00. Then they want you to run for $.2.00 a mile. Just don't work on paper let alone in real life. Fuel alone will run about $.70 to $.75 per mile insurance, $2 million public liability, lic plates and permits. The EPA regs for the engines WOW, and they have the engines so screwed up they don't perform like the old ones did. For example the 3 sisters in WY, loaded with my truck I could gain speed going up hill. New ones nope, they be water wagons!

    • @brentgunderson8586
      @brentgunderson8586 10 років тому

      V4? 8V92 maybe...? There have not been any V4s in a LONG time.
      Owner Operators have it rough yes but if you want to make it you can. Step deck/grain/van etc you cant make it no doubt. RGN is still a decent living however just high cost to get into.
      Your old truck can outpull new? My 600hp C16 would like a word with you as well as the 600 ISX.

    • @stan852627
      @stan852627 10 років тому

      Brett,
      The V4 statement was told to a Utah State Trooper when he had stopped me for speeding. Had to think of something, 83 in a 55 going uphill loaded. 20 over posted is reckless driving, go to jail or used to be.The engine is not on the road anymore. As well as the Cat 3408, Cat 1693, Mack E9 (which I had) and the KTA Cummins. These were all big cube engines and they would pull pretty good. Tell you what, take your C16 loaded and pull Donner no cheating but see if it will climb Donner at 55 MPH from the bottom clear to the rest area on top going east. If your C16 can run 55 MPH all the way to top loaded without getting off of 55 MPH then I will tell you you have a true 500 horses to the ground. This test is also hard on tires by the way. Give it a try and let me know. The 3 sisters in Wy I could gain speed going uphill when I got the switch out. Didn't drive it like that at all but one of those Cat boys was really sure he did have the big Kitty. Roy had a Cat 3408 and he and I ran together a few times they were pretty well matched except I got better fuel mileage. Sammy had a 1693 Cat and that engine was a pretty good match also. Just between you and me I liked the Cat 1693 but you can't buy any of them any more.

      My name this is easier than backing up a pick up truck with a trailer. i have a class A license and work as a heavy deisel technician. while this guy backed this trailer up very well it is not as hard as you might think to do this. if you drive a pick up truck and trailer with some practice you could do this exact samething after a couple hours

    • @TurtleDude05
      @TurtleDude05 7 років тому +9

      My name Yes, this is easier. The longer trailer is easier to control because it turns slower. I'm a spotter and back in 53' trailers up to 100 times a night or more. But when I hook up to a 35' i have to go a little slower because It's so much smaller it shifts faster and makes the corections harder. With that being said, this guy still did a good job.

Today I drove fruits and the local dutch farm roads are very small and the famrs dont have much pace for the 16.5 meter trailers. yea even here in the US it's part of the driving test, and every time you pull forward you lose points! You also have to back the trailer in a spot that's only 10 foot longer than the trailer itself so you have to get it in with the truck at a 90 degree angle. Touching any of the cones or touching the curb is an automatic fail!

    I saw this video before i became a truck driver and i was super impressed.
    I've been driving for a little over 6 years now and this is just regular skills.
    The spot was wide, the maneuvering space was large, and he had a few pull ups.
    Also it was mid-day so it's likely that he wasn't road weary.
    I'm not hating, he did a good job and it's a nice tractor-trailer, but if you asked that driver about his amazing maneuver, he'd say it was average too.
