For her apartment, the builders should have included a kitchenette.

Hi, Stevie! Great question. "Mother-daughter" units in Queens are constructed with one kitchen only, because they are legally one-family homes (and they generally must be sold that way as well, or they can run into problems at appraisal). It's up to a buyer/owner to do the conversion.
