  • My Wahoo Kickr is nearly a year old so here's my assessment of it over the last 12 months. I've used Zwift, TrainerRoad and Sufferfest and gone from a complete newbie to a full on cyclist in that time.

Great hands-on review! Actually love the home garage. It’s authentic and lends to the believability / credibility. If things are too GUCCI, you tend to question the independence of the UA-camr

I hacked the switches on the inside of the brake hoods. Peel the hood back from the bar and slip something like a beer bottle cap in there to keep the buttons from being pressed (I crafted something a bit more elegant, but you get the idea). Roll the hoods back in place and no more accidental dropping out of ERG mode.
Thanks for the review. I'll be sure to avoid the FB group.

Great video, you sum it up perfectly. Mine broke today and I have no intention of looking elsewhere. I love this bike. For me, I have a power supply with a blinking green light when plugged into the Kickr bike and it gets no power at all... I have read that this will be a replacement bike. I am slightly concerned that this appears to be a common fault yet it still happens. My bike is only 2 months old...

I've had not as many problems as you but wahoo have been exceptionally good with customers services, it's stated ft with my Kickr and Climb which I had a warranty replacement for both so sold these and invested in the Bike but had the power brick issue has it's in my garage which is cold most of the time, so bubble wrapped it and it's been good ever since also the stem quick release tried what they suggested but didn't work so they sent out a bolt to use also got a complementary ticker for my troubles. Happy that I got one as taking the bike on and off the Kickr Wasa faff. 👍

I wish I could mentally justify the tremendous cost enough to get one. I just can’t. I don’t understand why the world of cycling is so ridiculously expensive in general. $12k super bikes? $3k static trainers? $300 padded shorts? It’s so stupid....

It's not really the world of cycling. It's the social media world of cycling. Would love to see a channel by and for us mortals. it's always about the latest and best. But I think truth is, there's just so many undisclosed sponsorships and free stuff from the companies.

I hear ya. I have 2 bikes and a smart trainer. Kinda spoiled. Total cost over the years approaching 20k. But, in the last 4 years I have just been buying consumables to keep everything running. Financially much easier to handle.

Get a wattbike atom and you've instantly mentally reduced the price by a 1/3rd - and you most likely won't have to send it back because it breaks. They deliver them assembled too. Remember that the only guy on the internet who really reviews trainers and smart bikes puts out a 3 digit sprint and is more worried about whether the shifters are like "real" shifters and pointless features like that, than how robust the trainer is. Otherwise, I think, DC rainmaker's "there's no clear winner, theses are all good" would be very different. Here we have this review that shows it can't really stand up to just a few hundred watts more sprint without falling to pieces - and it's basically falling to pieces from the get go as far as the points of adjustment. The seatpost doesn't even stay up. Last time I had a bike where the seat post wouldn't stay up it was a kids bike costing around £50. It's laughably poor and it's only really Mark's clear new enjoyment of cycling that makes him overlook just how much it sucks to say it's great. What's great, I'd suggest, is simply the bliss chemicals surging around his blood after he's used it not because it's actually a sold, well designed and built product worth its £3.5k asking price. Oh and I'd guess that wahoo's replacement policy has stymied his actual realisation that it's not very good (plus the thing where, I get it a 6'6" guy who is used to being the tallest and heaviest guy in the room thinks that he's an extra special use case who is stronger than the bike will typically face - but, not really - a 4 digit 1xxx watt sprint is not that. It should be 'meh' for these smart bikes and trainers. They're supposed to be built for double that - and there are a fair number of people training on bikes that put out these big numbers. Ask them, what trainers are they using and, more importantly, how often does the team need to junk them and get new ones. That'll tell you which products are worth your money if you don't have a team budget that can just replace stuff if it breaks. It seems clear to me that either wahoo have factored in constant replacement into the asking price (in which case it's vastly overpriced) or that they'll inevitably go out of business because no company can keep sending out replacement £3.5k products for free can they? Excepting, I guess, that they're probably not really selling huge amounts of them in the first place, but unless the pricing model has huge margins they've got to be making a loss on them - and you're not supposed to make a loss on your flagship product are you? This is supposed to be the trainer that we all aspire to own when we buy a kickr core, not just a more expensive piece of junk that breaks after a year.
And the odd thing is, things like the kickr snap, which was perhaps 2x overpriced at the time (cheap as chips now, but no one should buy one) did feel really robust and tank like compared with other trainers. If you started on a dumb trainer from Halfords from Elite they really felt like they'd break. I remember the plastic melting on mine when I hit about 25mph because of the heat from the flywheel. It felt like a toy. By comparison the kickr snap (which, unfortunately I bought shortly before the kickr core came out) really felt like a tank. It sucks in pretty much every way that a wheel on trainer sucks, but you'd never expect to break it by using it. Where did the company who designed that go?

That clunking is the belt slipping a tooth, I’ve had it on my kickr sprinting but it’s easy to maintain the kickr and given it’s a refined product that’s been around nearly 10 years, support is there if you need to know anything.
Wahoo can teach the world about what customer service really means, and you final thoughts are spot on.
    Great vid 👍

@@MarkLewisfitness I imagine there will be a tension pulley as per the Kickr, with all the power you put through it they will get very hot and start to expand. If the belt has stretched at all 💪, then they will be out of tolerance and the slip will happen.
Does it have a way for you tension the belt yourself?
The bike will be refurbished and sold as a refurbished item through their website it’s a robust piece of kit clearly and there will be plenty of customer (me) desperate to purchase a warranted refurbished unit given the customer service levels.

Thanks for the review! I am also rather heavy (108 kg) and got a Kickr bike last November. I initially had some doubts about the robustness and wanted to go for the Stage alternative but still bought the kickr bike since it was the only one in stock. Very happy with my kickr so fare! Just had to change the saddle because I had some pain in the tailbone and I sometimes experience small cracking noises when sprinting.
I would greatly appreciate road bike tips or links for heavy ridders. I recently replaced the wheels of my road bike and struggled to find robust ones. When you are heavy, you are obviously less keen on saving a few grams than on getting robust and reliable parts.

I doubted for a long time between a kickr bike or the SB20 stages bike. Since I am not the lightest, I opted for the solid Stagesbike. Don't regret it for a second.
Rock solid with a weight of 65 kg in total and a flywheel of 17 kg. There ar also issues on the the facebook page but most of them are problems with the stages app and connection.
Possibly an option if your replacement bike gives up.

One bottle cage....deal breaker 🤣. Very well done. This is a significant investment, so I appreciated the frank review. The Stages SB20 is built like a tank, but lacks so many features of the Wahoo bike (tactile feedback for gears, easy adjustments among them) that the Wahoo seems the likely choice. I think you're kidding yourself a little bit that you're super heavy and stronger than mortal man. When TeamGB sit on a bike and put out 4 digit power numbers starting with 2 or 3, they're putting more force into their bikes. A lot more. Far skinnier crit riders are putting out 1k plus change sprints, it's not strong at all. Yes, arguably you're putting more forces elsewhere because you don't know how to sprint and thus waste a lot of effort tensing up muscles and pulling and pushing parts on the bike that don't move (or shouldn't) rather than pushing the pedals hard. But if the bike is falling over or needs counterbalancing kids included in the box, it's just a bad design. TBH I'd suggest you try a wattbike because they were built for people whose legs are built for sprinting to train on - long before smart bikes and zwift came along - they designed something that works for elite cyclists to use - and then later tagged on the gear changing / bluetooth zwift middle class toys. As for wahoo, my summary of your review is that they're selling a £1000 smart bike for 3.5x the cost so they can replace them when they break. That's not really good customer service is it? It's better customer service than if they didn't replace them, but the good money should go to the company that makes a product that's robust and works and that lasts 5 years at least. And that means 5 years for the people with Chris Hoy legs training hard on them. The rattle and hum on it when you adjust to fit yourself on it is terrible. And the thing is, the wattbike atom costs less.

Sorta impressed with Wahoo sending out new bikes all the time. That said, it's too bad the trainer isn't more user-serviceable. A drivetrain hasn't been yet designed that is impervious to wear and won't eventually need to swap out parts. All good suggestions but I'll stick with my old Cannondale Caad10/Kickr (which rotates up to lean against the wall when not in use!) until Wahoo comes out with a new model that's more structurally sound and incorporating some of the improvements mentioned here.

Spot on Mike, I need to replace my road bike chain every 1500 miles or so, even when cleaning the drive chain every week. Then there's freehub pawls etc. I'm not sure I would trust wahoo's long term test regime on products pre launch , it's seems like the battle between sales and product testing was way too lopsided for good outcomes.

Hi Mark, thanks so much for compiling this video. I had ordered my bike before yours had developed those nasty noises and whilst awaiting delivery thought what the hell have I done ! I am in my fifties have not ridden a bike since I was a teenager and have been on this thing five days a week for six weeks now and love it. I am seriously considering buying an outside bike as a result of this experience. I just hope I do not have issues as I do not relish sending this thing back. It is very heartening to hear Wahoo have such good customer service should I have problems . At this stage of the game I would definitely recommend this bike along with Zwift to anyone. Let’s just hope my Wahoo Kicker Bike is an above average one 😄

    • @markwood9755
      @markwood9755 3 роки тому +1

@@MarkLewisfitness I agree, it would be nice to know the percentage of bikes being sent back, I sincerely hope it is a relatively small number as it is a great product and would not want it turning into a financial burden for Wahoo. In my case a below average (for now) rider on a hopefully above average bike will provide for lots more fun and fitness 😄

Very strange to me that you still recommend this bike with all the downside you are mentioning. Have you tried others? All the recriminations you have are nonexistent on the Stage Bike SB20. I have 5000km on mine and still rock solid. Not your weight tho, I started at 84kg, now below 80kg. I would admit that in term of look the Kicker Bike is awesome and the SB20 a bit ordinary, but it sounds like only advantage so far. I don’t regret the investment. Keep up the good work, enjoy your posts!

I had a Wattbike Atom for 12 months and was very happy with it, except for the noise it made and the horrible shifter buttons that often got stuck - sold it last October on ebay for the same price that I bought it for (thanks Covid!) and bought a Kickr bike. Mine was broken right out of the box (something was not connected at the back and it would tilt forwards on its own), had a replacement bike 2 weeks later and since last October no problems. Customer services was great - no complaints there. The saddle I changed on day one and just today I double-wrapped the handlebar for more comfort.
In general I am really happy with it and do not regret my purchase but additional to the points you mentioned I don't understand why a 3k bike has only a single sided power meter (Atom has dual and is about half the price) and no cycling dynamics for working on your pedalling efficiency! I could put my favero assioma pedals on it but do not want to swap between bikes.
Using Sufferfest regularly I initially found the shifter side buttons annoying however quickly got used to them and now even appreciate them as a kind of "Panic button" when in a hard workout in ERG mode and running out of power having to quickly change back to level mode 🤣
In the new update in RGT cycling they have the side button now assigned to camera mode (looking back) which I find really useful. Also they display the current gear numbers on screen which saves me from looking down to the awkward positioned display on the bike. Fulgaz should really do the same - showing numbers on screen instead of this small weird gear symbol.
On the Kickr bike overall - same view here after using it for 6 months - it is still the best Smart trainer out there and I would absolutely buy it again!

What worries me is that your experience with the Wahoo customer service is very much due to the fact that you have quite an audience and might get a premium service for obvious PR reasons. Looking at Trustpilot however the reviews are largely scathing ... in particular when problems occur just after the warranty period ends and Wahoo basically says "not our problem". Now when wattbike released the atom they had exactly the same issues with customer service but they turned it around and recent trustpilot reviews of wattbike are very positive. So it's not a problem that can't be overcome but to me it doesn't look like Wahoo is making it a priority. Because of this I won't be touching Wahoo products with a bargepole.

The argument for most people is that they would rather buy something like a KIKR smart trainer and a really nice road bike and have the option to take said bike outside in the summer for cheaper/similar price, rather than being restricted to indoors by going with the KIKR BIKE.
All in all though brilliant overview for the bike if people are truly dedicated to indoor riding.

Just got my Wahoo Kickr bike a few hours before you dropped this vid, this video has left me with concerns. Left me wondering how wahoo is going to look after people outside warranty, which your about to experience. Also is the warranty experience in the UK representative of the experience you would get in Australia or other countries. Guess time will tell. In regards to pedals and saddle included, I almost wonder why bother including them, and instead have people buy them seperate. A more worthwhile accessory to include would be a Ant+ USB, as stated in the video a longer power cable, and maybe include 2 additional spare quick adjust handles.

Thanks for the vdo. My point of view is the following.
Personally I chose as home trainer the Stages bike SB20. It does not simulate the ascent nor the descent, it is for me a minus for the simulation but a plus for the stability and the reliability. The body of the bike is the same as the fitness bikes from Stages bikes which have been improved many times.
It is extremely easy to adjust to your body shape in all directions. I am sure I made the right choice.
    Sporty greetings
