  • Here’s an excerpt of my conversation with Jonathan David Haidt an acclaimed American social psychologist, author and professor of Ethical Leadership at New York University Stern School of Business.
With his main area of expertise being psychology of morality and moral emotions, Jonathan Haidt and I discussed about an array of topics varying from deteriorating moral progress to how humanising relationships can serve as a remedy to fear building around racism.
All that and much more is now available for my members and for everyone else, if you’d like early access to episodes, consider becoming a member on my website via colemanhughes.org/unfiltered

    1969 Gen X here.
We had racism on the ropes. We laughed at racist jokes about ourselves and others but regarded racist people as fools stuck in the horrible past we were lucky to be born after. In the 90's if you were against racism it just meant you were a regular person.
Anthrax and Public Enemy on stage collab is all the proof I needed.
We didn't cancel people. The dude making the hardcore racist jokes usually got the hint that nobody was laughing. It was a sly accountability, and we had tough conversations without worrying about pissing each other off.
There are always going to be racist individuals. It is already illegal to discriminate against people by Race, Religion, Sex, Disability, and other immutable characteristics. I investigated Federal and State discrimination complaints for 8 years. There are many instances of racism. And it was awesome helping people through it and holding accountable those who are unwilling to provide equal access/opportunity to everyone. There are also many many instances where the human experience of being surrounded by our own misperceptions led to a misunderstanding. Many accusations of racism were when the employer or landlord doesn't give a reason for their actions and the person is left to their assumptions. Those assumptions and feelings for how things are generally going are shaped by information the person gets. If every source of information is telling them white supremacists are lurking everywhere, that no matter how hard they work it will not matter because of racism, it doesn't take a phd to figure out what the majority of humans in that situation would assume.
Too much togetherness isn't good for the ones sticking it to us so Division has become the game once again.
They need White Supremacy to be a boogeyman. The big trial that just wrapped up and the response afterwards is proof. Anyone who watched the news and not the trial should feel white supremacist got away with taking a machine gun across state lines and shot 3 black people. NONE OF THAT HAPPENED and it is easily known for the past year. This is no mistake. This is all intentional.
Don't let the tablet, TV, phone, or teachers make you hate your neighbor. Keep using your heads folks and talk to each other!
    Chris Forever Young

Same! Bravo! Well put. I'm down for catching and holding accountable ACTUAL racism, proven bigotry that breaks laws AGAINST racism. And like you have stated for years and years that our human interactions are quite complex with a multitude of factors at play which can definitely be more about one person just not liking another person's attitude or narcissism or intimidation or manipulation tactics, and SKIN TONE isn't on their minds. It's actually about not trusting another human being. Maybe for damn good reasons. Plus, every human being is a hybrid of the higher and lesser angels within our beings. Everyone.

"White supremacy" is often just code for "White lower class people are trying to advocate for their interests, quick label them as racist"

I just finished a decade as an adjunct professor. I love to joke with my class and even do edgy humor with my students. I have a day job and don’t worry about getting fired. It helps understanding the underlying philosophies of my leftist students.

We are so indoctrinated and intimidated that even my FRIENDS who know me well enough will sometimes cringe or be silent when I use off-color or Non-PC humor with them IN PRIVATE!? Most of the time they are in on the jokes, but it is those in-between moments where suddenly they are mentally intimidated that they are becoming manipulated into silence that worries me.

It’s generous of you to call their beliefs a ‘philosophy’. We all know students are blindly parroting the mores of their social circle. None of them have actually considered the entire landscape of political and cultural thought before determining that their beliefs are the best on offer.

Listen to Don Rickles… dumb people would call him offensive, but smart people could feel the love he had for his fellow human. His jokes were an admission that racial divides weren’t that serious. We shouldn’t let extremists take away the power of humor to unite people.

One of my psychology lecturers in college spent 15 mins in one class attempting to discredit Steven Pinker and calling him a conservative, which obviously serves to discredit him more when you say that to a group of young mostly female psychology students. He also shared several articles that seek to discredit anything Pinker has done outside of linguistics. I found it very manipulative because the same lecturer has BLM and LGBTQ+ posters on his office door, which creates a narrative that if he is someone who supports these causes he must be of high moral character and therefore, is right about Pinker. To be fair, that was one of the few times during my undergrad that I felt I was being told what to think, not how to think.

Shocking that when looking an actual human in the eye, a human capable of punching you in the mouth, suddenly most people’s words get kinder.

@@tomcotter4299 ^ This is what right-wing brain washing looks like. Thanks for being a good example of a moron. My kids are going to go to college overseas and never come back, I can't leave because I'm too old to migrate. I wish you luck on your journey my sad little friend. Actually, I'm gonna keep going, I want you to answer a simple question, which country is it easier to hire a nanny so both parents can work the USA or Britain? Remember one of those countries has healthcare and the other doesn't. My wife passed away when my kids were young and I would have given anything to be in a country with healthcare. You have no idea.

The host mentions how race jokes translated well amongst his friends, yet didn't translate well in crowds full of strangers in a class room. Well Duh! Jokes in general are subjective. Jokes from friends will always come off as less malicious. While race jokes, via randoms, within a country that was built on systematic racism, wouldnt. Humans have always displayed that sort of "stand-offish" behavior when they encounter strangers - even before race was a factor.
What Johnathan stated should be done is a great idea. Laughter and just being happy alters a lot. Very healing. That's why I put a great comedian in the same lane as a well educated doctor. But the problem is we have too middle age + folks, that are gonna be racist regardless, still hanging around. And these people are the ones that dictate what u see on social media, in schools, etc. U can try to change the minds of the youth, but in America, there's always gonna be some 40+ year old bitter racist that's gonna delay progress. Oprah said this once before, but the only way racism is gonna slow down is via the hc racist dying off.
What's also not discussed is the connection to money. Racism, lgbt right, women's rights, left vs right, all of these things are money generators. Using comedy to bring people closer together means someone else would be losing billions - not gonna happen anytime soon. Therefore, play for survival...
