Hi Eric, nice work! An alternative to the PLL is a programmable oscillator like the DS1086Z, you can set it to whatever frequency you like, within reason. It is only available for surface mount, but I made an adaptor PCB that gives it the same pinout as a standard through-hole oscillator.
Ahh cool, I'll check that out. The main requirement is that the signal needs to be sync'd to the CPU clock. The shift register needs to clock at 7 times the CPU clock in my system. If the programmable oscillator can generate sync'd signals at varying frequencies, it might work.
@thecodesorcerer Ah no it can't do that. You could generate a faster clock though, and divide it down by different amounts for each of them, keeping results in sync. PLLs sounds fun to play with though!

Thank you! Yeah, the math in the datasheet was a little intimidating. Knobs are much more fun.
