I really enjoy when u add the video clips of your teams running the plays. If u can throw more clips like this at the end of videos that would be awesome.
I'm having my central mid take the throw ins, with most of the time play onto the winger which has a good pace and cross into the box or if he beats the defender always encourage to take a shoot. My striker is always free in the middle and makes the run to the box.
We took your advice today. A majority of our throws went back to the CB. But midway through the game, the CB asked me: "What do I do with the ball?" :) The answer in almost every case, given our situation was "switch it". But the CBs didn't know how to take their space *backwards* or even *sideways*. I am not sure what kind of drill will address this, but something that gives the CB the perspective that there's massive space for them to use when the other team is assuming the throw is going to go forward and to train them to us it would be great. I am going to continue to think about what that might look like. :)
Thats great Mike. Love the updates on your team. I actually do pattern choreography got throw ins. Maybe that needs to be another video. :) Yes the idea is pretty much that a switch is on every single throw at the 7v7 level. Once teams get wise to the fact you're going back to your CB it opens up everything else.
This is great, but how do you teach this? I've found that practices at the U-8 level have to be about constant action to limit standing around. What drills do you run to help get the players to understand this?
I do pattern choreography. The kids don’t love it but it’s how you embed patterns. Then you can do a game to two Pugg goals starting with a throw in. I’ll have to do a video on it!
usually I do. depends on the level of the team and the players involved. I like to encourage the fullbacks to go up and down the pitch as much as they can. It's important though to have kids here who with the speed and fitness to be able to do that.
Don't quite get why the 4/5 are disallowed from taking throw ins. All of the examples the defending team can easily win the ball but for whatever reason the players are setup poorly. Like 6:56 why is the red 3 on the blue 9? Should be the 5 and the 4 comes over for balance/cover allowing the 3 to pickup the thrower after the ball enters play. The red 2 is also disconnected and not pinched inside... Allowing the 4/5 to take throw ins allows for a better transition to 9v9 in my opinion and gives another option to throw the ball. The other CB shift over for a pass below and the GK balances us out the other way if we can/need to switch the ball
Two reasons why I don’t like the 4/5 throwing it in. 1. Harder to switch field off throw ins. If the 9 isn’t free for a dangerous throw up the field my preference is to play ball back to CBs to switch 2. I like both CB behind on a throw to counterpress if we lose ball on a throw which at younger ages happens quite a bit. At 9v9 I also have the FBs take the throws unless we’re trying to play fast and an opportunity for someone else to throw it quickly occurs
Having the outside mids doing the throw in is the safest IMO. As Coach Rory mentions, if a ball is lost, we have two defenders looking to defend immediately whereas if a 4/5 throws in and a ball gets played behind, now we have one defender back there by himself… It also allows the team to stay in shape more throughout the throw in and also immediately after.
@@cesarvega8360 I play 2-3-1 and yes I have the left and right back take the throw ins. But we aren’t practiced enough to play possession yet. The aptitude is lower on an Extra team vs a 2-3 year old club team. It’s getting better but not overnight.
I'm a first time U10 coach and these videos have helped me more than you know. Thank you so much.
Fantastic! Let me know how it goes!

ALWAYS THANK YOU RORY FOR YOUR TIME AND SELFLESS SERVICE TO YOUTH SOCCER.
Thanks!

@@CoachRorySoccer I will take this strongly under advisement!

Would you consider creating video focusing on the role of a goalkeeper?
Great idea! I’ll add it to the list
❤
I coach AYSO U10s and we do not have great ball possession skills yet. Is it too risky to play the ball back toward goal at this stage?
I’d focus on technical skills as much as possible. But if your want to teach the game it’s worth the risk.

Not bad but why on earth would on 7:53 the 6 play all the way back to 3 as opposed to using the clear path to the 9?
100%. Much better option. Just trying to show that switching field on throw ins is on quite a bit at the youth level. But great pick up!
@@CoachRorySoccer fair enough! Nice video hence thumbs up!
I always have the defenders take the throws. We have the lowest goal differential out of 51 teams in the league. 16-0
I prefer outside backs to do all throw ins also, in 11v11. But do you also have them throw in in 7v7?
The idea for me is to get them to switch field on throw ins from an early age. The space is always there.
@@CoachRorySoccer I coach Girls AYSO Extra 2013. It would be nice if I had the players for more years like the club teams. We need more time together.
