Such an inspirational conversation. I am a retired architectural student, almost Mr Murcutts age, and after hearing him speak of the principles of architectural design, I am ready to start again.
What great times in which these inspiring figures would grace the Newcastle Architecture campus - however no more given they were all fired off with a landscape architect now running the show !
"Without exception the kids that are doing it by hand get to the final gate in a very short time ... the reason is that he set up these gates so that the computer cannot get through" Sounds like a very biased test! I am sure he did not describe Stiny's experiment accurately. Murcutt is one of my heroes, but if we continue to tell our students to ignore digital tools without even a thorough discussion of their importance as well their potential pitfalls, we will simply be irrelevant. Imagine if I tell the designers at Boeing to design the next airplane with nothing more than an HB pencil. People confuse drawing and design. Drawing is part of design, but design is so much more than just drawing. Anyway, you cannot stop progress, so you might as well embrace it and show how it can be creative and helpful.
+Wassim Jabi but a Boeing is part of the worlds problems lol your missing the point completely. The world has gone mad, you can either help it or do your your own thing. We all have choices but it is obvious to me what is right or wrong. Just build a wooden boat ahaha
+jono ozzo yes sure. Let's go back to sail boats and stop all progress. If you are living by your word, you should not even be using a computer to post comments. You should write them on papyrus and send them by pigeon carriers to Google's HQ.
I do agree the war against digital tool in the world of design is getting out of hand. However, I do believe designing is much more easier, faster and "natural" when you do it by hand first. I believe a healthy balance between drawing and technology is the best.
“Take a computer away for the next 3 years”.... How to say such words to a brilliant and handicap student? If a computer is really just an instrument, whats the matter?
I believe that he said that you can't imagine as well with a computer as with a free-flowing pencil. Mr Murcutt's drawings are works of art in their economy, and the communicating of ideas and intents.
