- The film tells the legendary story of Xuanzang, a high monk of the Tang Dynasty, who spent 17 years traveling to India to obtain Buddhist scriptures, facing difficulties and dangers without fear. In the prosperous era of the Tang Dynasty, the young Xuanzang risked his life to sneak out of the country in search of the true essence of Buddhism, encountering numerous obstacles and calamities along the way, yet gaining a deep understanding of the suffering of the common people. Surrounded by soldiers, betrayed by disciples, stranded in a desert, lacking water and food, Xuanzang single-mindedly sought the Dharma. He finally arrived in India, where he promoted kindness, meditation, and Buddhist practice. By the time he successfully returned after participating in the Great Debate in India, he was already an elderly man in his fifties.

On IMDb and other areas it is known as "Xuan Zang" with an original title of "Da Tang Xuan Zang".
The first 10 minutes of the beginning are missing, which includes the story introduction and the usual credits ... Of the ending, only the credits and song are missing.

You made a mistake, India wasn't Tang monk's destination, his destination was Gandhara which was located west of China where it was called the West (Western Region) by China. India was located south of China and is more so today. Tang monk went to obtain more Mahayana Gandhari Buddhist manuscripts which are the original Buddhist manuscripts, not Indian Theravada text. The Buddhism version in China is Gandhara Mahayana, not Indian Theravada.

Life is just like the story of Journey to The West. There will adversities, calamities, bone dry deserts, an occasional oasis, a rain, but perseverance, determination, & steadfast faith will eventually bear fruits.
As a Tibetan, I have my deepest respect for Bodhisattva XuangZang. When he reached Nalanda Mahavihar it teared me, considering the countless attacks on Nalanda Mahavihar - what Buddha said rang thru " 3 things cannot be hidden for long the sun, the moon and the truth". Thank you master !

Wu Cheng'en was the author of the Chinese book Xiyouji (in English, Journey to the West, or sometimes ‘Monkey’) written around 1560. This film is probably much closer to the real story of what Wu Cheng’en’s novel was based on. As such, they’re aimed at a very different audience. For English speakers, Wu Chen’en’s book has been translated by Arthur Waley (who shortened it a lot: the original is very long). It’s well worth reading.

@@nanyanguo1 Yes: I am not very knowledgeable about this; but it seems to me a monk (whatever his name may have been) did actually exist, and Wu Cheng’en wrote a story (an amusing fantasy) based on the monk’s journey hundreds of years later. I suppose one could find similar stories based on long-ago legends in many cultures.
@@Orwic1 yes, the author Wu was inspired by the real monk Xuanzang perilous journey .In his fantasy novel, the character of the monk based on Xuanzang is Tang Sanzang.. It was respectful of Wu not to use the real monk name. as he wasnt writing the real life story of Xuanzang Imo ,its the greatest novel of this genre ever written as it has the most "legendary ,fantastic n outrageous yet lovable character" at the same time rich n deep in mythological , religious n Taoist/Confuscian philosophies with subtle thought provoking messages. This is bcos Wu wasnt merely a fantasy adventure writer , he was a scholar in the Imperial University , a philosopher and a poet too,. Truly a brilliant lst class literary work by him
His superhero character is one man army challenging all the gods in heaven and not just demons n spirits from hell.
One of the most wonderful movies I have ever seen. ❤

The movie don't have wukong because this movie based on real history of Xuangzang,which is from the 7th century,while the novel with wukong is written in 16th century based on the 7th century Xuanzang with some real history and fantasy element mix in, the real xuangzang travel alone to india and study Yogācāra and bringing the knowledge back to China.

Well that's weird. There's no sun wo kong and the other 3 😅, just the monk from Tang China. So I guess they are communicating in the Pali language the common language at that time.

很多很多年前买了蒙古人拍的《成吉思汗》的VCD。电视剧里的人物有很多不同种族，就是说什么族演什么族，什么族说什么语言，其他也是有翻译员。玄奘除了唐语，应该懂得梵语和一些西域的语言，但是途中一定需要翻译员。
