  • In a lab in Ireland, a group of scientists stand around a stainless steel table. One is holding a device not unlike a small turkey baster. His free hand plunges into a box on the table and pulls out a mouse.
Using his device, he administers a brown solution rectally.
This mouse has just received a fecal microbiota transplant. And the donor was not another mouse, but a human being. And the person in question had symptoms of severe depression.
In this episode, Jonathan speaks with Prof. John Cryan, an author of the study, which showed a relationship between the gut and the brain. Listen in to learn more about his fascinating research, how microbes may affect our brains, and how to eat to appease your gut bugs.
John Cryan is a professor at University College Cork and a world-leading researcher into the relationship between our brain and our gut microbiome.

Fascinating! A lot of this makes so much sense to me. When my children were small, my friends were disinfecting just about EVERYTHING their children came into contact with, but (within reason) I let my sons experience the world without cleaning them off with a wet wipe every hour. They played in soil in the garden and we went for walks in the woods etc. They didn't get so many colds/bugs/etc. as other kids. They are both in their 30s now and pretty healthy. I'm really interested in how contact with the natural world - soil, trees, flowers etc. - affects our microbiome. Professor Cryan is a great speaker. I look forward to more videos with him. :)

Morning lovely people.... I'm loving my Zoe. Looking forward to my personal nutrition results. Im only a week in, but have been IF'ing now for 5 weeks, this has made me more fussy about what I eat in my eating window. But after listening to this...perhaps my gut was telling my brain something. I seem to just want to eat nutritious food. My biggest problem is not being able to eat all I buy whilst shopping, so I have had to find a way of storing my fresh diverse produce for longer. A pod cast on food storage I think would be great. Highly processed food has a longer shelf /fridge life making it easier to store and keep. I have started to buy frozen and tinned food ( Food for Life has helped me here). Im wondering, have I missed a podcast on food and storage? Anyway love Zoe , and happy annoying anyone who will listen about how it has improved my health, my energy, my sleep and my waistline. I even told my Doctor she should try it when i went for a thyroid medication for check up. ( I have a non functioning thyroid). I was staggered that a NHS GP knew nothing about Gut health, IF, and is health benefits. I gave her the link to Zoe. I would now like to go to my old Slimming World class and advise them all and meet new and pregnant mothers and teach them this from day one. 'Diversity rules' Michelle xx

I noticed your reference to Slimming World. Now I know the seriously bad effects artificial sweeteners have on gut microbiome I feel very uncomfortable when 'diet' drinks are promoted. I also dread to think about the damage Slimming World HiFi bars must do. They are not really food at all, just a collection of artificial additives combined to produce something resembling food.

My mind was blown by how he likened probiotics to drugs, such that both are very broad concepts, but unlike drugs, we still don't know which probiotic works for specific types of illnesses. It made me realize how much we still don't know about this particular medical field.
Also, I love how he acknowledged democratizing and making available of mental health options to people of lower socioeconomic status and making gut and mental health accessible to people. Kudos to this really great interview!

Excellent episode. This has such important implications for diet and nutrition in early years settings and schools and we need to be educating families Health visitors and School Nurses more about it. Over recent years whilst I’ve been working in education the number of children with emotional and behavioural needs has increased significantly. Diet must play a larger part than we realised.

I've noticed that food served in care homes can be high in refined carbohydrates and lacking in fibre rich foods. My mother who suffers from dementia was offered a chip butty for her evening meal! When she was being cared for by home carers I made sure there was always plenty of fresh and dried fruit and tinned fish available. She always ate wholemeal, seeded bread. Quick and easy to prepare, but so much better for health and wellbeing.

I think Prof Cryan will be widely recognised as a pioneer in human health and wellbeing. His work is revealing the profound symbiosis between a human being and the microbes that live inside us. If the microbes aren't happy, the human isn't happy (or healthy). Promote the right microbes through appropriate nutrition and reap the long-term benefits.

Very interesting. Thank you Jonathan and Prof Cryan. When I increased dietary diversity (adding rye and homemade saurkraut along with kefir) I developed problems with bloating and constipation. No previous diagnosis of Irritable Bowel and no pain. Changing to a low fodmap diet resolved the issue. Now I have to be careful about the types of high fibre/fermented foods that I can eat. I'll be interested to see if others found their depression got much worse when doing the IF study, a few years ago a counselor told me about the gut producing more serotonin than the brain and to make sure I ate well/didn't skip meals, it wasn't until I tried to eat in the 10h window I realised just how right they were! (Luckily only took 2-3 days to go back to normal).
I hadn't really thought about what the various medications I am now reliant on do to my microbiome I'll have to look into it further to see if any of them or their fillers happen to have been studied yet (not that I have much choice but to take them unfortunately)

One thing that we overlook here is that we got used to swallowing medication instead of pumping it directly into our blood through our veins. Now I don’t know if the reason is that we are all too scared of needles, if it just is easier for manufacturers to produce pills or if swallowing actually slows down the release of the compounds in our blood bringing some benefit, but if we only changed that one habit, our microbiome would definetely be healthier…

Does the microbiome control cravings like sugar, or is this moreso the need for fast energy? I have a full on addiction to sugar and affects my emotions in extreme ways but when I try to reduce the intake to 5 grams a day the withdrawals become overwhelming. I understand the glucose requirement and inducing response but my internal regulation is ridiculously sensitive so the classic "sugar begets sugar" becomes intense and the next thing I know I'm experiencing BPD traits.
So how do I get MY microbiome to talk nicer to my brain?? 😫

Whenever researchers talk about 'artificial sweeteners' I wish they'd clarify what they mean by that. Which ones? Aspartame, Cyclamate, Saccharin, Ace-K, Sucralose? All of them? Is Stevia and the sugar alcohols such as Xylitol, Mannitol, Erythitol and many others also labelled artificial sweeteners? Have they been tested, individually, too? Some sweeteners are more 'artificial', if you could call it that, than others and their chemical make up very different. Unless there's a common mechanism by which they all upset the gut microbiome, I really wish they'd name the sweeteners involved. Even on research papers it's often just stated, 'artificial sweetener' without stipulating which one (s) as if we all know what they mean. This lack of distinction seems to be a common problem in the diet discussion world.

So the houseful of dogs at home in Scotland is going to be healthier than my flat and my cat and visiting pigeons in London? I speak to as many dogs as I see as I have always had them before moving to London, but, it makes me question how leaving Scotland and the dogs and horses maybe impacted my microbiome as I only got IBS since moving to London.

Was that my gut telling me what I needed? Later that day, still with friends and eating out at Cote, I really enjoyed the fish stew, but hadn't realised that there would be quite a number of new potatoes, which I ate, in and under the fish. Sounds like H pylori, other issues also present. Find a functional medicine doctor that can do a work up on all aspects: stool, blood, gene profile. Best wishes,

What’s this about mitochondria being microbes on the loose and how key they are?

    • @misterb.s.8745
      @misterb.s.8745 11 місяців тому +1

The evobio theory goes that mitochondria were microbes (archaea? I'm not sure) that entered into symbiotic relationships with eukaryotic cells, until eventually they became incorporated as organelles.

Arthritis, rheumatism, any immune system diseases, diabetes, blood pressure.... also check yr CRP results next time u have bood test . C-reactive protein is inflammation marker. Or get homocysteine levels checked. Depends what you're looking for tbh.

Where does the HEART brain figure in this?
The relationship of HEAD- HEART-GUT brains are surely at the root of mental health issues and disorders. The VAGAS nerve is the superhighway between all three. The gut microbiome is one thing but the very neuro transmitters eg dopamine are extensively throughout the body and are also associated with the balance of the MIND.

This is why I really hate youtubers peddling probiotics. It's basically untested medication doing who knows what. There are bacteria you want to supportand some you want to suppress, and it won't be done by random shots.
