Porsche 915 Transaxle Parts Inspection & Tear Down The Unconventional Way-AVERT YOUR EYES

- More wacky homemade tools used to tear down my Porsche 915 transmission. I'm not too upset that this transmission needs lots of TLC. I'd rather fix it now then on the side of the road after the wheels are locked up. This transaxle needs a new input shaft, first gear, new dog teeth and sycnros and the differential housing bearing bore repaired.
Good thing I have some extra parts in my stash! Whew!

This video was long, so I didn't talk about the gear ratios in this trans. Apparently it has a close ratio 4th gear that only came in the Carrera RS 27:25?
Wonder if I have a RS trans here?
If it is a RS transmission wouldn’t it be quite valuable? Maybe you could restore it, sell it and finance any custom transmission you wanted. There must be a list of RS transmission serial numbers someplace. 🤞🏻
My thoughts exactly. All the numbers on the bottom are worn off though
Great work as always Tom! I really enjoy and appreciate your methods and that you take the time to explain everything so well.
Thanks Jeff!
Looking forward to the garage renovation vid
Are you volunteering?
Great video.
Thanks, love these transaxle repair videos!
Thanks John! Hope to repair soon😃 Taking apart isn't so bad.
Another great video mate.
Thank you!
06:23 This must be what's wrong with my 2nd gear. Sometimes cooperates; sometimes doesnt. 😑Thanks for the visual!
Best of luck. Let me know if you decide to tear it down and inspect.
This just serves to remind me that working on a gearbox isn’t something I should ever be doing 😂
Great work,, you must surely have an engineering background?
I must wear mechanical engineer on my sleeve, ha ha
Awesome stuff Tom- completely unrelated but have you ever dealt with a possibly bent banana arm? Wondering if you have ever devised a way to measure them?
Thanks
Funny you say this, because I suspect one of my rear arms is bent. It aligned ok, but the wheelbase is 3/8 longer on one side.
I plan on making a fixture that I can compare several arms until I'm certain which are good and bad.
Do you have lwb alloy arms?
Im getting a minor vibration decelerating in gear around 3,000 rpm goes away quickly. My cv joints outer seem to be in not so good shape.
Hmm,. I would try to isolate if the vibration is engine related or wheel speed related. Try again at the same speed when the clutch is in.
A bad CV might still vibrate?
I just got a 70 911t and work at the waste water plant off brookhurst. Curious to get your advice on it as it needs some repair work thinking of doing it myself. But I’m sure you’d have done good advice can I contact you,
