The saddest ending of all time. So well done, it hurts. I find it very hard to watch now, knowing the whole story. Just hurts too much. The film hit it's intended audience with me. It's message is burned into my brain, for as long as I live.
Sadly 2 say, this is my 1st time watching this, but ik I'll enjoy it bc some of my favorite actors r n it & Ik I'll b watching the original 1 after this. Thks 4 these worth watching movies & added comments..
Awesome, awesome movie! And book, too. I read it in Science Fiction Lit II class in high school, in Mississippi. We were reading post-catastrophe stories. During that time, in the 70s, a cloud of fallout from China's nuclear testing was going over the state. I and the other 3 students were like, "You did this on purpose, didn't you?" we asked our teacher.
It could have happened if the Cuban missile crisis in October '62 had escalated. The film's future date of 1964 may have been very feasible at the end of a nuclear war.
Then we had a psychopath who wanted a nuke war if he could not have his revolution. Now we have a psychopath who threatens a nuke war if he cannot have his way.
Excellent film. I watched it first in the early '60s. Always felt awestruck by it's somewhat dark glimpse into a possible future for mankind at the beginning of the Nuclear Age.
The way Stanley Kramer manages the scifi in this film is more terrifying because is done through the melodrama. Never the fear about nuclear disaster felt so close. The awkward sensation and the suffocating atmosphere starts from the very beginning. Some scenes have such power that can squash your feelings, but one the best things is the chemistry between the actors.
YES! That's what made it feel so real. I enjoyed how understated it is and how it only amplifies what the film is trying to achieve (and oh boy it does)
Well, the neo-Soviet Union Mk2 isn't fairing so well right now. The demonic tyrant with the chronic genital apparatus disorder will hopefully soon be history - along with his failed country of Zombies.
FUN FACT : Ava Gardner did not say ,,,"Melbourne was the perfect place to make a film about the end of the world",,, the author of the "quote" was in fact a writer for the Sydney Morning Herald, Neil Jillett, who recently admitted that the quote was fabricated. He was writing a piece about the filming at the time, and attributed the quote to Gardner out of spite for Melbourne getting some attention in the "spotlight", something Sydneysiders do not like.
And Williamstown. And Phillip Island. And some great shots of Elizabeth Street and Russell Street looking up to the new ICI building - Melbourne's first skyscraper.
Now two years later (today's date May 9th, 2022), Putin hints that he might use Nuclear Weapons in his Russia vs. Ukraine War, in this day of the big Russia War Machine Parade.
Well, they were pretty bad at making trailers in the 50's. This is better than some, I have seen original trailers for Singin in the Rain and The Apartment where they decided it was a GREAT IDEA to put the final scene of the film in the trailer.....
Well she was a washed up social drunk that ages women. Also Peck didn't like the idea of casting older men in love with young starlets. As there was an actress at 24, it is probably best.

Doomsday film, but premise is untrue. Fallout decays rapidly in radioactivity after bomb detonation. After a few weeks they could land and start rebuilding. People in shelters could also. Kramer must have got the Order of Lenin for this turkey.
There is both prompt and persistent radiation associated with a blast. The prompt stuff would be gone, yes, but the persistent variety entered every piece of metal, every building, every blade of grass, body of water, human body, or food animal across a wide area (assuming hundreds of nuke detonations in the N. Hemisphere). Then there are the tens of millions of tons of radioactive dust and debris hurled into the upper atmosphere, to circle around the Earth and eventually fall out (delayed fallout). Nuclear winter would get them before that, even assuming a hemisphere full of people found something to eat and drink while it did. No, the attacks would have wasted the ecosystem; there's no tech (nor amount of time we can live through) that can help us come back from that.

Gregory Peck, Anthony Perkins, Ava Gardener- all favourites!
Ava Gardner was badly miscast in this, though.

We watched the film in Science Fiction class, here in Westland, Michigan, USA, in 1981. I have never read the book, I am ashamed to say.

what sucks about this trailer is it's not really a trailer of the movie at all.

IKR... it's like the 50's version of Rotten Tomatoes or something, all the narrator is doing is quoting asinine critics.
That's the way they used to do trailers in the 40s and 50s.
I'll stay...with you

This needs to be viewed by every American given the present situation with US war against Russia.
Movies from the 1989 sould be watchable for free its 2023, 1959 is 64 y. old .........most actors are dead or in the retirement home..........
Weird. Hearing 'Waltzing Matilda' play over scenes of a film about a dystopian nuclear wipeout...
A lot of people don't know about this movie,it's best they don't
They won't now. They can SEE it all in "Oppenheimer".
Is this a new film?
It was in 1958.

stanley kubrick.
Agree. It is more Stanley Baxter than Stanley Kubrick.
Seriously, it is killed by its score which seems to ram "Waltzing Matilda" down your throat at every opportunity.

These nukes were salted with cobalt and thousands of them were dropped in the war according to the book.
