  • This is a demonstration of a wood gas unit I built. I built this thing from junk and yet it produces a clean burning viable fuel that can be used for cooking, heating and as a fuel to run motor vehicles along with powering generators with.
You need to ask yourself the following question: Why should we tolerate high fuel prices along with the threat of fuel shortages in this country and while we are at it, why should we be dependent on oil from the middle east or from anywhere else? If I could construct this in my back yard from junk and produce REAL fuel so can our government. I wonder why they turn their backs on this proven green technology? Do you still trust "BIG" government? I don't and you shouldn't either! It's time for a change people!

It's pretty wild that this technology has been around all this time and yet, I never even heard of it until 5 or 6 months before I built this first gasifier.

seems you are on the right track...because, you apparently have the right thinking and motivations. Folks who know lots about proper burning of wood (and NOT those who have those nasty 'outdoor wood furnaces'...UNLESS, they are true 'gassification' units..)...are the Masonry Heater Association guys, check them out on the web. Good luck, NK

You are correct about the grate and I already have a cool upgrade for that. Don't let the vortex fool you. I should have mentioned this in the video but I just forgot and I was waiting on someone to point out what you pointed out. On the inside of the top one gallon can, I have a shaped piece of internal metal that is curved to the inner radius of the can to give it the spinning effect. The can was too thin to attempt to tie into it's side so I choose this method for this build.

Sir you must read minds! I have added more pipe for a better cooling and yes, it made a big difference. The FEMA design can crack tar but everything has to be ran perfect with a good thick layer of red hot coals. I just came back from the junk yard and I picked up a 2-1/2 ft X 1/4 inch thick steel air tank that is bell shaped at it's top so it's perfect for a reduction zone. I will be adding air intake jets to this design to make a clean gas producer. Once again, thanks for the reply.

IF you have ever filled a paper cup half way full of water then light it. The fire will always stop at the water line and you can even boil water in a paper cup. This is why I am using the cement. I made my own cone but it was out of 16 Gauge steel so I had to protect it. There are some people making reduction zones out of potters clay too. I started to do that but I used the cement instead.

They are using these systems in rural India.Investers are helping areas where they don't have power. Small systems that power the surrounding homes for a nominal fee. They run it for 5 hours a night.Changing peoples lives. using rice husks that can't be used for cattle feed.I have a couple people here that want me to help them build this for their homesteads and farms. Want to use your filter system. i will make sure they know who came up with it and maybe i will video it. Stand by...:)

It is very addictive! I am not only adding new changes to the one I have now but I am already into a new build of a small downdraft setup using tuned air jets to raise the temperature in the burn zone to help break down tar for a cleaner burn.

I would agree that the government as a whole isn't to blame but those involved in the fuel industry are aware of this technology and they don't want to see stuff like this fly. There was a power company out west that used a monster gasifier but theirs used old tires for fuel and they were powering millions of homes that is no longer being reported on. They were non polluting and their byproducts were carbon and steel from the steel belts and clean power. Cont:

Thanks Russ. The funny thing is, Zero Fossil Fuel is kind of responsible for
me building this. In the early 80's a friend of mine and I were discussing alternate fuels and he remembered his grandfather telling him that during WW2, they used wood for fuel to run their cars but the internet didn't exist back then and so we never really followed up on it. Zero just happened to discuss this topic in one of his videos this past summer that made me remember that story so I decided to build one.

Cool that u made sure u some how had a good cyclone one thing i have been testing out is in any pipe use a flat piece of tin and twist it and place inside the pipe it give more area for heat loss and spins the gas cleaning it! One of my frds has gone a diff way and made a fin setup like a cutter but with a twist so the gas in a pipe spins u might want to try something like that too the spinning gas takes out more water than just a flowing one!

  • @TecKnowFreak
    @TecKnowFreak 11 років тому

As another note some of the best filter stuff i have used r the things that can be water washed like bb's or even small steal balls filled into a pipe one that i have used alot is pure light it dont absorb and dont burn but makes alot of surface area to cool and collect water and tar and let it drop out just some info u might want to try! One thing u said yr fan will gum up over time not true if u get yr gas very clean! Most units i have made have 5 or more diff filter setups for clean gas!

Thank you for that reply. I can honestly say this is not about me getting hits or views. The run time depends on the fuel. The stuff in the video started out in a one gallon paint bucket and it lasted almost an hour. I see it like this: I could have washed a load of clothes and charged a bunch of rechargeable 15 minute batteries with that burn all while watching some TV with a few lights thrown into the mix. As soon as I finish the tweaks I will do a video that covers the build in detail and I wish that I would have mentioned that in the video.

We couldn't power the country off of natural resources but imagine if people were given jobs to harvest overgrown land just enough to clean it up then that material was used to power small towns. We would have the following perks (1) Real jobs (2) Cleaned up landscapes (3) Clean power. And the best part of this would be a renewable clean energy. Yeah, the power companies owners are very aware of this technology.

Nice vid a few things u might want to change tho one is yr grate u just used thin metal for it okay for short use but u did use a nice thick pipe for burner tube u should change out yr grate to a thicker metal or use a stainless bowl for better longer lasting! Another one thing u should change is how yr inlet to yr cyclone setup u have it going in it at a 90deg angle change that to more like a 45 deg so its more along side the can u will get way more action cleaning better!

Hey thanks... This was my first build and it is simple but the truth is it's too dirty and due to tar it will gum everything up including the gas pipes and the filters
on the gasifier. Check out the Imbert build that I did later. It's a bit more involved but it's well worth the effort plus the gasifier itself stays clean too.

I don't know how much you had to pay for the PDF files but the information on Imbert gasifiers is pretty much scattered all over the internet for free. Some of it is hard to follow and some of it isn't hard at all to understand but unlike the FEMA papers, it unfortunately falls short on small engine plans.
This is why Wayne Keith makes money selling gasifier plans for building systems that will run a vehicle but I really think there are more people interested in real deal small scale Imberts for generating emergency power or even for going off grid.
I learned the basic concept on the Imbert builds then experimented. Did you ever go to my website miniwoodgas.com and take a look at the PDF downloads I have there? I have a lot of stuff on the Imbert builds there.
You mentioned temperature vs tar and that's also covered in detail on the website too. Check this out. miniwoodgas.com/miniwoodgas_002.htm
Unlike the FEMA plans that supposedly give you good information for different sized engines the Imbert stuff falls short on the small engine builds. This is what I'm going after. I would like to see what you get from Amazon. I would be interested in giving you my contact info but you will need to contact me through the miniwoodgas website where I won't be posting my address in the public view such as the blogs like this.

Rudy if you view the filter construction video you will find the link to the PDF

OKay now, one suggestion is to line the actual firebox/combustion chamber with firebrick, that allows the temps to get above 1,200F and thereby burning ALL of your combustible volatiles...THAT's where you get the efficiency from. It have heard that just burning the 'cellulose' in the wood gives you 25% of the available btu's,...BUT, burning the volatiles gives you the other 75% of available heat. I

To answer your question, we're not using this technology widely because it doesn't scale up well. According to the FEMA plans, 20lb of dry wood is about equivalent to a gallon of gas. We use about 6.8bn bbl/day, equivalent to a trillion tons of wood per year. Assuming a sustainable yield of 10.9 tons of dry wood per acre per year, we need 149 million square miles of forest. All the forests in the USA would replace less than 1% of oil use, never mind coal, natural gas, etc.

Very nicely done sir! I really liked your speech at the end and I couldn't agree more. Keep up the good work and let's clean up this earth before it's too late...
I have a quick question for you. Would it be possible to compress this fuel into a gas tank and use it like regular gas? I assume the compression said of things could be complicated but that would be awesome. It means you could build an on-demand reserve using wood.
I guess getting an electric car and charging it up is also an option.

theroofsedge Thanks for the reply. Have you seen "video 6"? I have actually taken this design much further and I am in mid stroke of finalizing a much better and a much simpler build that will burn cleaner too. Hold off on constructing the FEMA design. The Imbert design will work much better for you. Take your time and don't be in a rush to get yours built. Check back with me and hopefully I'll be up and running with the new build soon.

Interesting, that 'russian stoves' or 'masonry heaters' have a +88% combustion efficiency. THAT's something to think about. YOU may be the first to more or less perfect this technology. So, have at it, and good luck, Sincerely, NK

Flash hi Nico here, I have been running my 3 cyl diesel 20kva with my gasifier on 40%diesel and 60% gas for the past 7 years. is it possible to run my whole system on gas only, i use charcoal as fuel. Ive been told that one cannot run a diesel engine on gas only? Man i wish I had your videos earlier ive been on this for the past 15 years.
Your videos and explanations and running commentary are great you should be a college professor the way you can explain stuff.
    Best regards from Namibia Africa.

Hey thanks for the vote of confidence. I don't know about being a college professor but if you are running your system on charcoal, that's about as clean and simple as it gets so I wouldn't see why you couldn't run the system on just woodgas.

Thanks for the reply, from what i have heard from a few mechanics is that diesel not only ignites in injectors but also is a source of cooling and lubrication to the tips and if you run gas only you need to change your tips/nozzles or replace them with i dont know what as the combustion temp is way to high whereas a petrol engine can easily combust at that high temp. Do you perhaps have a suggestion as to what modifications can be done to nozzles and fuelpump if any?I opened my engine two weeks ago cause it used oil when open we found that one of my oil seals at the flywheel was leaking and was the main reason for my oil consumption all the sleeves pistons etc was sqeeky clean no tar or carbon buildup and that after 7 years of running with only oil and filter changes my genset runs 5 hours a day everyday!!!
      regards nico

That I wouldn't know how to answer. You may have to research that a bit. The engine will get most of it's lubrication from the crankcase oil just like a standard petroleum engine but I don't know what to tell you about the injectors. The glow plugs should be fine though.

Just to be clear this was my first gasifier video here and it was a FEMA. I have since built an Imbert that is very clean compared to this gasifier. but no my reactor has never had any burn through issues.

what i want here the reasons that make the gasifier doesn't burn i used in my experement asmall fan it works but the production is just smoke that doesn;t burn
also i used ashaker ignition port above the gasifier there is ahole for the air ,cooler and filter so what is the reasons that make the gasifier fail
is it important to put acharcoal in the biggining i didn't i wait your answer
    thanks very mutch

Nasser do you have any videos of your setup? If you had a video on your channel I along with others could see what you have and possibly help you get it up and running. Do you have a cell phone that can capture video?

finallay i have avideo on youtube( GAZ FIRE 2014 ONE) in this video there is no shaker and ignition port temporary to minimize the holes
i already burned the charcoal and put the wood chips later i used r.t.v. silicon for insulatrion this material usually used for pvc pipes i dont know if it is work here or not the production is just smoke no gas what is the reason i want from you to write me the name of r.t.v. you used to buy it on ebay and is there afan on ebay simillar with your fan
    with best regards

Nasser I purchased my RTV cement from an automotive parts house. I seen your video and part of the problem might be the wood chips you are using. You may want to try to use either wood pellets or even small sticks broken up into small pieces.

Would a water bubbler help for cooling and filtering? Is there enough head pressure for such a filter?

    • @flash001USA
      @flash001USA  6 років тому +1

Now this is an old video when I first started experimenting with gasifiers But to answer your question about the water filters in my opinion there's too much back pressure unless you're using a Venturi filter system and the truth is if there are any tars in the gas they will carry straight to the system even passed the water filter. A good Venturi filter will definitely pull out Ash particles and other contaminants that can scratch the inside of a cylinder wall in a engine. With the new system I have I can get a lot of run time out of the filters before they need to be changed.
