Lensman has been one of the greatest anime films I've ever watched as a kid. It brings back a lot of memories. This documentary portrays the tremendous amount of skill, cooperation, management and sheer work required to create a film like this in those days. Thank you for uploading this!
it's time for Hollywood to do a proper film of this franchise, this film can provide plenty of visual concepts, but redesign enmey ships please, looks like s*it for someone who eat too much purple potatoes.@@Slaphappy1
They used the Cray computer, possibly one of the best of that time to render that "thing". Nowadays, anyone can do it with a regular laptop and a basic knowledge in sculpting using blender. Times have changed a lot!
17:40 There are moments in the film where wireframe cgi is overlayed on console panels that have been hand drawn. It adds so much more movement to each scene.
Even today making a film like this would be difficult, how much more so 40 years ago? I think that watching it today it very much stands the test of time and still looks better than almost every animated film made, but perhaps I'm biased :) Anyway, it's great to see how it was made - thanks for this video.

The animation and the animators kicked ass back in the 1983/84 .This entire anime looks like the Silver Hawk intro. 2 bad the story,pacing and character buildup sucks!

公開当時でも既にＳＦの大古典であったレンズマン。それを、当時、まだ技術も一般的ではなかったＣＧと組み合わせ、時代を越えたＳＦとして完成させようとした。従来のセル画による手書きのアニメ部分も、ＣＧのインパクトに負けまいと、力を込めて作画されているのが分かる。作品は、長大な原作の為、作品はそのダイジェスト的な内容でまとめられているだけに、真面目で地味な印象が強い故、アニメオタクが騒ぐタイプの作品にはならなかったが、有機的なボスコーンのＳＦ設定などは、後年の映画やゲームに、大きな影響を与えたのではないか。

CGとセルの摺合せの格闘は攻殻の江連さん辺り迄続く訳か…
原作と比べると大幅に改変されてるんだよね。
スターウォーズは元々はレンズマンが元ネタだけど、そのスターウォーズからの影響が色濃く出ている。
レンズの継承なんて、その最たるもの。（原作では最初からレンズを持つGPの士官だからね）
考えてみれば、GP（銀河パトロール隊）という設定の元祖でもあるんだよなぁ。レンズマンは。宇宙刑事ギャバンなんかも、レンズマンの系譜にある作品というわけだｗ（ギャバンの銀河連邦警察の元ネタもGP）
セル部分の作画・・・と言っても一度撮影されてタイミングが早いのでリテイクとして、地上に墜落した宇宙船が巻き上げた土煙の完成動画の間に一枚ずつ追加作画を描いたな。原作は読んでいたからこれがどんな作品になるのかと思ったけれど、こんなお話では先が続かないと思ったもんだ。
