      Nick one of the first things I noticed when I moved here is that Germans personal bubble is much smaller then Americans so bumping into someone like a lite rub dose not deme a pardon. I am sure when you were at the beer festival you must have noticed people sitting very close in some cases even sitting back to back and using each as back rest lol. You can also see it when parking or driving. Space is limited here so it’s become part of the culture.

    Fun facts... If the police had caught you cleaning the ice of off your windscreen whilst the motor is running, that could cost you up to 100€ because you are polluting the air and causing stress to others because of the loud motor noise.

      GBEmpire Hahaha, just had the same thought. He is not even aware how lucky he was that the guy was so polite and said "Excuse me, could you please..."
      Maybe they should get a few mandatory driving lessons before they could drive around in Germany without basic knowledge of traffic laws... ;-)

    • @Quotenwagnerianer
      @Quotenwagnerianer 5 років тому +31

      Indeed. That was not a case of not minding ones own business. It is in fact a violation of german traffic law to let the motor run to warm up your car.
      §30 STVO: Bei der Benutzung von Fahrzeugen sind unnötiger Lärm und vermeidbare Abgasbelästigungen verboten. 2Es ist insbesondere verboten, Fahrzeugmotoren unnötig laufen zu lassen und Fahrzeugtüren übermäßig laut zu schließen.
      (Unnecessary noise and avoidable exhaust nuisance are prohibited when vehicles are used. In particular, it is forbidden to run vehicle engines unnecessarily and to close vehicle doors excessively loudly.)
      The german supreme court ruled that this paragraph comes into play as soon as someone feels disturbed by the noise.

    • @kaianttila1619
      @kaianttila1619 5 років тому +6

      That goes a little too far. Cars nowadays don't make that much noise.

    • @derfiese1318

      And there is an other thing that come in my head. Isnt it outlandish or maybe forbidden to have a running machine like this and by the time it runs you dont have it under your control? You cant steer or push the breaks if something happen. Or someone came and knock you down and steel it. I know! Not very probable, but why take risk if you can scratch the ice from your car and get muscles instead. :)

    the Dirtbike thing is not as easy as in the US. Germany is so much smaller and you will always piss someone off with that thing. In US you can go out in the woods and dont find a single Human around. And also the Forest protection is very strict in Germany, witch makes sense in my opinion

    • @imrehundertwasser7094
      @imrehundertwasser7094 5 років тому +3

      In Baden-Württemberg, you aren't even allowed to ride a regular bike in the forest unless it's on a path that is at least 2 m wide. Though they made some exceptions in the last few years for specially marked bike trails.

    I raised two kids in Germany and sent them back to America to visit for summer breaks in their early teens. Their reaction was "Nice place to visit but..." Later I sent my daughter to live for eight months on an island in the Caribbean hang out on the beach, get a scuba license etc. When she got back she said the first thing she'd learned was how good she had it in Germany. So I gave up.

    I'm sure jet skis, dirt bikes, etc. add to the quality of life of the people who enjoy riding them, but they put a big dent in the quality of life of everyone else who wants to enjoy the beach or the mountains. The stink and the noise? No thanks! I'm with the Germans on this one.
    Also, regarding Cody's point about grinding: when I go to the grocery store, is my experience any better if everyone there works twelve or sixteen hour shifts, as opposed to working short shifts and the store just hiring more people? If someone *wants* to grind, in order to be a star athlete or a successful businessperson or a famous musician, more power to them, but if someone simply wants to pull their weight and receive fair compensation (i.e. a wage you can live on), that should be an option. No one should *have* to work more than 40 hours a week to pay the bills.

    Just some advice about personal space in grocery stores: TELL PEOPLE TO TAKE A STEP BACK. Like, I understand why you're complaining, but you can totally just say to people "Sorry, can you take a step back please? You're really close." Or, my all time favorite (yes, I say this to people, and so far it has worked every time): "You are at piggyback-ride distance, which is really uncomfortable because I don't intend to give you a piggyback ride. Would you mind stepping back a bit?"

    we simply don't have that much wilderness and open space. When people live as close together as we do there would emerge chaos if anyone would use fun vehicles with loud engines on the lakes/rivers/woods and no one else could use it for recreation. think about it: in NYCs Centralpark you cant ride dirtbikes either. Or in any park in Japan. And that's the same with bumping... imagine to excuse yourself 263 times on a walk from battery park to Columbus Sq...

    Guys, please learn about sustainability, and mindfullness. There are reasons for laws, regulations and licenses - and the most important reason is to protect others (incl. nature) from human stupidity and egoism. Most Germans know and therefore accept that.

    Great stream - I loved it. Don't be so harsh on the rules. Some of them are annoying, and there also are people zealously watching whether you comply. But those people exist in every society, not only in Germany. Most of us tend to bend rules anyway - try to watch how many people disregard a red light in the middle of the night. Most rules are made for both protecting yourself and your fellow citizens. If you don't fasten your seatbelt , you endager yourself. And if an accident happens and you get hurt because you didn't fasten it, you not only have to suffer physical consequences yourself, but also inflict conflict and guilt on the other part. Guess it has to do with caring and protecting.

    When my parents visited my sister in the USA when she was studying there and at the grocery stores (which were fascinating BTW - 19 sorts of ready made and flavoured oatmeal but the actual real oatmeal in the shop was in the pet food department!) and the cashier said "have a nice day" which is the conversation terminator in US English - they thought it meant they should carry on talking so got shocked looks when they said something back.

      yeah I guess it depends on the sport. Mostly I wouldn't frown on the clubsport experience in germany. The US produces some excelent athletes (the best) in some categories, but there are other's were germany isn'T far behind itself. And If the kid is not about to commit his/her whole life to the sport I think clublife can actually offer you just as much as college life if you embrace it. I mean there are people sticking to the same club for years and years, growing up playing in the same team, engaging in club activity, becoming family friends. Half of my vacations I did with family friends we met in one sportsclub or the other back when we first moved in my city when I was only four. And you're not bound to school or college with your sport but can do easily keep doing it playing in leagues and stuff even outside of college and as a hobby.

    The saying "sorry": I'd say it depends on where you are and who you're really dealing with. The very dour individuals might be in a bubble of their own and ignore everything that happens in an activity of routine. In general, it seems to be accepted to sort of mumble it half-loud, without making a big fuss about it.

    haha... other children besides mee... I thought I would fall down from my chair ;) My experience with Germans, I lived with my dearest German friends in Budapest (and I am from Poland, so 2 nations that haven't been really doing well with each other for last 200 years).
    My German group was really welcoming (I've been the only non-German there). Germans are not always really direct - they try to be always polite and respectful, even if they don't share your opinion, they wouldn't tell you that openly. Also not always are so super rules respectful (at least abroad :) I mean, neither they are extra rebellious, but act sometimes like normal humans ;) they've been crossing the crossroads on red light much more often than me ;)

    The problem isn't that dirt bikes aren't allowed here, but the forests are just private property and typically used for lumber or game, same goes for all the pastures. You could go to local quarries though and ask them to use the grounds on weekends or own your own forest etc. The German state may be able to take most fun things from us, like guns, but cars and motorcycles(or bicycles for boring people) are our equivalent to guns. And Jetskis....well good luck finding a lake large enough to properly use them. And the North Sea is a bit too cold and dangerous to ride them on.

      Finde ich überhaupt nicht, finde sie sehr amüsant und ironisch hin und wieder. Was hat sie denn deiner Meinung nach Schlimmes getan, um verbal von dir in den Boden gestampft werden zu müssen?! Und die wichtigste Frage ist: kannst du Gegenwind verkraften?

    • @Gladbachfan_1980
      @Gladbachfan_1980 5 років тому +2

      + only Liebchen. Sehe ich absolut anders. Ironisch ist es auf gar keinen Fall, wenn frau behauptet, dass nur noch eine Beschäftigung als Sportler bleibt, wenn man intellektuell nicht gerade üppig bedacht wurde. Das ist respektlos, insbesondere wenn sie es im Kontext mit ihrem Freund äußert, und dann auch noch vor laufender Kamera. Und es ist auch keineswegs amüsant, wenn sie z.B. behauptet, dass freundlicher Umgang im Supermarkt überbewertet wird und eigentlich entbehrlich ist. Und Gegenwind immer gerne, ich lasse mich gerne auch ein bisschen provozieren und gebe dann was Lustiges zurück. Aber bitte respektvoll und ohne persönliche Herabsetzung. Und letzteres hat sie eindeutig getan, was für mich ein Grund wäre, ihr ordentlich den Marsch zu blasen (unter 4 Augen!!!!!) und sofort das Gespräch vor der Kamera zu beenden. Er fühlt sich scheinbar auch nicht wirklich wohl mit ihrem dummdreisten Gelaber, wenn ich mir seine Körpersprache so anschaue und sie will sich nur wichtig machen, wirklich armselig und es zeugt von wenig Selbstvertrauen. Umgekehrt kann sie natürlich den gleichen Maßstab an mich anlegen, damit habe ich nicht die geringsten Schwierigkeiten. Und wenn ich mich tatsächlich mal daneben benommen haben sollte, dann entschuldige ich mich natürlich sofort, das ist doch klar.

      Es ist wirklich faszinierend, wie gewisse Äußerungen Reaktionen hervorrufen können. Ich denke nach wie vor nicht, dass alles wirklich soooo Ernst gemeint war.
