- Voters in Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim democracy, have cast their ballots to elect a new president. In this country of 270 million people, where Sunni Muslims are the majority, some 12 percent of the population belong to religious minorities: Christians, Shiites, Buddhists and Hindus, among others. This mosaic of religious communities has historically lived together in peace. But over the past two decades, radical Sunni groups have targeted minorities, with more than 600 incidences of violence documented since 2014. Largely ignored during the election campaign, minority groups now wonder who and what awaits them. Our team on the ground reports.

As a minority in indonesia, i think we live in a ticking bomb. Most of the time, the people are so peaceful and tolerant towards each other. But sometimes, some issues will make an escalation in social media, and that's when you know how some of your fellow indonesian think about you and your religion/ people. I see many indonesian here try to minimize intolerance that's still happening towards the minority, don't take their words literally. It's not long ago when religious and ethnic conflicts happened across indonesia. Let's hope those conflicts and persecution will not happen anymore in indonesia 🤞

In various places in Indonesia you can build a mosque today without needing bureaucratic permission. but to build a church you have to fight with all kinds of bureaucracy which makes things difficult. There are even churches that have been built but are prohibited from being used because the church permit has not yet been issued.
But you're lying, according to the religious department, churches are actually increasing every year, there are so many Christian denominations, each of them is selfish and wants to build their own church and doesn't want to join.

Being aware that everyone will be held responsible for their actions, we Indonesians do not feel pressured to practice religion. Particularly in Indonesia, attacking churches or another religion place of worship is not in line with Islamic teachings; whoever carried out this act is a true enemy of Islam and a betrayer of our dear nation. Violence is not a part of our culture unless we are attacked. We loved living in harmony, we accepted our differences, and we will keep preserving the beauty of our diversity for future generations.

The part on the hijab is very true. My father grew up in West Java from 1950's to 1970's and said he only spotted a handful of women wearing the hijab, usually partners of preachers, imams etc. When he came to visit in 90's he was shocked to see how common the hijab was.

This is why polls about sharia in Indonesia are sometimes misleading. Ask Indonesians outside Aceh: 'do you want aceh or taliban style sharia law to be used nationwide in Indonesia?' and I bet most would say no. Most women would be against it and you could expect a lot of separatist movements since the country is ridiculously diverse.

I live in south kalimantan, and i don't think this happening in my region. I mean, if we take one or two places and make generalization of it, then obviously it's not fair and honest conclusion. I think to check whether indonesia is secular country or not, we can check from who was the elected president in 2024? Obviously, Prabowo Subianto is not religious person, and also his family are mixed from muslim and christian background (but majority of people vote for him). I think, this also should be considered when drawing a conclusion, not only based on what women wear (e.g hijab) because what they wear are not representing what they think (and women have different motives why they wear what they wear). For examples, they may think it is to prevent them from harassment, or they think they look pretty, or they think it is obligation, etc. I think in my view, Indonesia is still secular country and respectful for other minorities. Of course, we always find several incidents regarding intolerant cases in some places. However, the thing is, you still can report to the police if they experiences of such aggression. My point is, majority of indonesian muslims are tolerant to other faith, but of course there are always some radical muslims who think themselves as rightous people...

Indonesia is quite a big country and you report as if this happens in all of Indonesia even though this very rarely happens in Indonesia and there is much worse treatment of Muslims in European countries. Don't be a media for propaganda of our religion, Muslims, Christians and other people can live together. here, and even though we live in a country with the largest Muslim majority during the presidential election, Indonesian Muslims preferred a presidential candidate with a Pancasila ideology rather than a very Islamic ideology, and the majority when I asked them wanted to live in peace with any religion, your news is clear. It is very, very unfair and in fact the presidential candidate who has a very Islamic ideology and is supported by radical Islam is actually supported by America and Israel and given a fairly large flow of funds.
Remember there are more good people in Indonesia than those who are radical.
