Marina, I grew up in Cupertino and your comment about our culture and what we spend our money on is important for people to know. I think the flashest people we see around are the want-to-be that are spending the money to look the part. They are leasing their cars and not putting their money to good use.
To be honest the first person I would like to meet in Silicon Valley is you Marina. But can you talk about what to do if there is no opportunity to move to another country or just go to study abroad. And from the same topic how to grow and succeed in UA-cam if you are unable to pay money to do professional content.
Not being too fancy is something I've learned when I started to work in a startup I.T company. In outsourcing IT company, there is much local mentality involved, but when you work for a startup? That's when you know what real I.T is about. And I personally had so many issues with this! Because I LOVE to dress smartly, I love looking my best etc. However, I soon realized that it's only hurting me. Still, I'm having the same issues (like, I'd better wear a blouse than a T-shirt), but after a decade in IT? I've adjusted to this one, I guess.
