- Putting Minecraft 1.15 to THE EXTREMES! We are going to create lag, grief and destroy everything to try and make minecraft crash. 1 million TNT, a world made of TNT, giant flying machines, 10,000 minecraft bees and more are used to try and kill the game. This is fun.

Look at the debug info where it says "Intergrated server @ x ms ticks". The time per tick is only about 50-60ms and anything below 50 means the game is running perfectly smooth (on the server).
Lighting updates used to be a huge problem on servers, but I think Mojang fixed it in 1.14

The thing is, the TNT exploding isn't what crashed his computer. I can tell because I just detonated a superflat world on my 4790k (which is worse than Mumbo's 9980XE), and it survived. I think the thing that crashed the superflat world was the block updates from the redstone blocks igniting the TNT above them.

My current system is a desktop that has a RTX 2070 8GB and Ryzen 7 @ 3.7GHz with 4.3GHz boost but my previous computer was a laptop with an i7 4th gen (I think) @ 2.2GHz and a 2GB Radeon card that didn't always like working with Minecraft because it was switchable graphics and required me to tell it which executable to use. The launcher starts a JRE that runs the actual MineCraft process. Switchable graphics were (and may still be) incredibly stupid as well, that's why when I built my current machine I specifically avoided an integrated card so Windows only has one choice, the right one. Anyway the point is I used to play MineCraft all the time on that old computer and never had too many issues, the newer versions have gotten so laggy (which is probably why 1.15 was so focused on bug fixing) that even my new computer will struggle sometimes though most of the time I can run it with decent shaders no problem (at least on 1.13 and 1.14 I haven't tested 1.15 yet since Optifine is still in dev). Speaking of Optifine, it's always done an excellent job of making MC run better. The only snag is that you have to wait for it's sole developer to make a new one (and 1.15 is proving to take quite a while I presume due to the new graphics engine).

Alright so let's get technical.
Question: how do you crash Minecraft?
Answer: there's three different ways (that I can think of, at least).
1) find a bug in the code; an assumption the programmers made and didn't safe-check, find a way to make that assumption not hold. For example: find a division where you can control the denominator, find a way to make that denominator 0, boom, game crashes (java.lang.ArithmeticException: division by 0)
2) find a way to make the game run out of memory. Probably hard to do on a beastly PC that is also used for video editing, but maybe it works by just spawning a f-ton of entities. Boom, game crashes (java.lang.OutOfMemoryException: Java heap space)
3 and probably most interstingly) find a way to cause infinite recursion. I think you actually did this in your world of TNT. One got ignited, as it exploded it had to find all its neighbors to ignite them, which in turn had to find all their neighbors, who had to find their neighbors and so on. Because your world was an infinite layer of TNT rather than a finite block of merely 10.000, the game will quickly run into problems. That's also why it happened before even the first explosion. Boom, game crashed (java.lang.StackOverflowException)

Felix Klenk on the tnt world bit I’m going to guess this is exactly right.
As all the tnt blocks were on top of redstone they just needed a block update to ignite & when tnt ignites it turns from a block to an entity, effectively providing a block update.
I vaguely remember seeing that the tnt were placed 3 deep so whilst the top layer was able to be ignited by the lava and burn through some its fuse, when the middle one ignited it caused a block update to the bottom one, thus starting the update chain.
One way to prevent this kind of crash would be to lower your render distance thus limiting the distance the update can spread within your world.

My potato computer gets on MC 1.14.4 with Optifine around 20-60 FPS. But the real problem are the lag spikes! Sometimes it lags for like a minute or so and that's just my small singleplayer world!

Mistakes, those little details, are where the game lives up to its current greatness. But and here's the clever part: most of these actually only affect the less experienced players of the game. This means that only the inexperienced or less emotionally attuned play would experience problems.

The thing whit this test is that your PC is more built on heavily multi-threaded aplications like blender, or so, but MC isn't well optimised for more than one thread. If you'd have a i9 9900K which can be overclocked to 5.0 GHz easily, MC would run a smoother considering MC is not multi-threaded
He's also using a 3840x2066 display, which could explain a lot of the lag too.
My CPU is overclocked to 4.7GHz so not far off!

Hey Mumbo, I love your vids! Know I'm a bit late to the party on this one but if you want to crash the game you need to cause non-player based mass block updates. What happens in crashes is a stack overflow caused by too many blocks updating in 1 frame. The game activates a kill switch to prevent overwriting other data. Unfortunately for us, if a "player" creates the block update then it won't crash, it'll just stop updating. The "player based-ness" of an update is also transferred through a chain of updates, which is really useful for update suppression machines. As you saw in your tnt world, the lava randomly lit a tnt, which updated it's neighboring tnt to realize it's powered, the game predicted that it would prime and updated the neighboring tnt automatically before processing so that all updates (in this case tnt priming) happen at the same time, the next tnt primes their neighbors and so on, this is why insta-wire works and why your game crashed suddenly in a single frame. Since the tnt updates weren't considered a "player" update (being caused by a random fire), the kill switch activated and your game crashed.
Lighting effects and mob tracking don't update any blocks so it will take much more work for them to crash the game. Even in the event of memory filling up the game has strategies of dealing with it and will just cause the momentary freezes while it processes the tick. Much of the lag relating to these types of contraptions is also client-side and will seem more harsh than it is. Other ways you can crash your game is through redstone updates (for example a superflat world with powered rails would not crash your game if you broke one, but if you somehow powered/unpowered one with a repeater it would), randomtick updates (for example flowing water on top of that same superflat world), or mob updates (a creeper explosion on that same world). Hope this helps!

@@caploiudavid374 Perhaps in his case it's for the best that Java is an interpreter language and won't use more memory than is allotted to it. On the other hand if Java edition was remade in another language that's closer to the machine (like C++ which is what Bedrock uses) it would run infinitely better but may introduce more OS specific problems (probably not too many). Interpreter languages are easier to port to other systems since the actual code runs in an interpreter and can thus run on any system with the appropriate interpreter (in the case of Java it's the JRE though MineCraft on Windows uses it's own JRE by default for more consistency). Java is also a pretty old language at this point which has many pros and cons. When MC originally came out the performance hit of Java wasn't a big deal (it was a much simpler game and cross compatibility was harder to do in other languages) but now the game is much bigger and their are better tools for porting other non-interpreter languages between systems.

Pistons, entity falling, explosions etc are all server-side. Light that you see is client side, it has to be for full bright hacks to work, but the that effects mob spawning is server side, your flying lag machine effected both. Weather also runs off the same basic mechanics.

Mumbo you probably won’t see this but- you’re not using your computers full potential. If you look in the top right of the f3 screen you have 2gb of system memory allocated for Minecraft (which is default so I don’t blame you) but there is a way to allocate more ram to vanilla Minecraft. I won’t get into it, but it’s relatively simple if you just look it up! I hope you see this and it helps. I love your content man, keep up the good work!

I work with Java systems quite a bit for my job. The first thing I noticed was that you are using Java 1.8.0 (AKA Java 8). It is actually likely you could get some even better results if you were to install Java 11 and run Minecraft with that instead. Since Minecraft 1.13, Mojang have written the Java edition of Minecraft to be compatible with newer versions of Java which have better handling of system memory for most applications when compared to Java 8.

Consider yourself lucky. My lil bro's laptop literally cant handle the game past version 1.9. It just goes 0 fps. Unless you use optifine in which case it runs pretty well on all settings low.
Rip tho, 1.15 doesn't have optifine yet so yeah....he cant enjoy the bees yet.
