Dear, dear Mr. Bennett, the 'scrotal itch' reminded me of another pharmacist who called to a packed end-of-surgery queue "Where's the gentleman with a bowel problem?". Anybody with a urinary infection must have been severely affected! Thank you once again.

so nice to know. really presumptuous of me to just suppose he only appeals to an English audience. there are some wonderful clips here on youtube of a programme he did called A Night In With Alan Bennett (something like that) where he's picking all the old TV clips he grew up with that influenced his writing and talking about them, completely worth a watch

Mini Mc I must admit that I'm surprised that someone so quirkily English (and northern English, at that) has even made an impact in Texas. I had always assumed that Bennett - like cricket - didn't travel well.

So easy to listen to all the way through, so entertaining, intellectual, artistic and agile in thought and description 😊 If there is a Crown Jewels of British literature…Alan Bennett is truly a sparkling one! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏😉👍👍

4dorno I do so agree, what a national treasure. I used to buy all his diaries on CDs. What a brilliant discovery to find all this on you tube. I was once lucky enough to glimpse him near his cottage in Yorkshire . I was rooted to the spot and would have loved to have had the confidence to have spoken to him to tell him how much I admired and appreciated him.

His father's lifelong dislike of sport as a result of a cricket bat being taken back by the photographer at a sitting had me chuckling . Alan Bennett is indeed a national treasure , even though it's a term he cannot abide .

@Steve Sandford ... a great man that many should appreciate for more than linguistic skills and humour. He's an absolute delight. Maybe I'm a little biased coming from a Lancs/Yorkshire family, but I doubt it. Beyond beautiful. There is a Spanish word for this that we don't have in English, and that is duende.

Alan Bennets gently acerbic observations may whip up nostalgiac enthusiasm amongst the chattering classes it belongs to days long gone . Yes Alan Bennet is still alive and well in 1970s aspic.

Quite a long while ago I was a domestic in the home of a movie mogul. Aneswering the doorbell one afternoon I was surprized to seeTyrone Power standing there. I had not been warned so awestruck led him to the living room. Of course, I later put it together that it had been the son of Mr. Power and Linda Christian. Shortly after that I was let go for having had a quickie in the beach house with Peter Lawfords brother, a dead ringer for his sibling. I was very young.
