Dancing in the Cold: San Carlos Apache Pow Wow's Grand Entry

After spending the afternoon at the ASU West Pow Wow, my mom and I headed to the San Carlos Apache Gold Casino Pow Wow! I already knew it was going to be cold and, unfortunately, I left my warm jackets at home since I didn’t plan for the change in locations. I layered up with my packable puffer, wind jacket, scarf, and gloves to prepare for the chilly night ahead.
We arrived just in time for Grand Entry as the sun was setting and the temperatures started dropping quickly. The pow wow was set behind the casino and resort, at the golf course. We drove around the casino and found parking in a dirt lot near rows of portapotties and foot-pumped handwashing stations. The event had a line of merch vendors and another section for food vendors before reaching the main pow wow area.
It was heartwarming to spot friends right away, including Tate Honadick, a pow wow MC (who's set to MC at the CRIT Pow Wow in Parker, AZ). After a quick chat, I also caught up with Rick Yazzie, another MC. At this point, they both know me by name, and I’m always glad to share photos with them while they’re dancing or on the mic.
I used to think scarves and gloves were unnecessary, but they really kept me warm - except I couldn’t keep the gloves on because I needed to adjust my camera settings constantly. Still, they were a great idea for staying comfortable.
As the night went on, I was relieved when it seemed like the pow wow was going to end early due to the cold. We started Grand Entry at 7pm and wrapped up around 8:30pm. After heading home to Phoenix, I transferred files from my cameras to hard drives, recharged devices, and prepped to return for the final day. Next up: wrapping up the San Carlos Pow Wow on Sunday afternoon!
