It still looks kind of crazy, so painting it is incredibly exciting! We have chopped the dresser/cabinet up and stuck it back together again so it can fit perfectly in our van build kitchen.
We filled all the screw holes with wood filler, sanded them down along with sanding the entire piece of furniture before painting a base coat of underlay so the chalk paint would go on evenly across the entire thing.
The top of the cabinet also needed edging around the top to allow items to stay secure, which is why we opted to add a push-fit copper pipework around the top, which really completed the whole look!

You kids are doing an AMAZING job!!! This ole Nannie thinks it’s absolutely lovely. Thank you for sharing everything!! Blessings always ~Lisa
Y'all are so sweet together. Just love the work you are doing on your home. I get totally immersed in your videos.
Well done that kitchen cabinet looks lovely. it is really cosy. Love to watch and see how the van is transforming into a home now.
Wow, such great detail work here. You did an amazing job with the conceptualization and execution of this project.
It will pay dividends for years.
Thanks for showing us how you did it.
Cheers!
Wow the shelf looks great in that colour and what a great finishing touch with the copper piping, well done guys looking excellent
I’ve been following your barn conversion and am just now catching up with you van life/van conversion videos. It’s super interesting and how wonderful that you are actually incorporating heirloom furniture. You have a great eye for detail and an amazing work ethic.
Fantastic video guys. Love watching you two have fun and being creative. You make me wish I was young now. Keep being you..
LOVE your aesthetic choices!
For anyone out there, a word of advice from a professional painter: Always always ALWAYS lightly sand between coats of paint to get a super smooth finish on furniture/wood. I would use 320 grit sandpaper to sand after priming, then again after the first and 2nd coat of paint. Then, use 600 grit sandpaper after the last coat until the surface is perfectly smooth. Then, spray on a coat or two of polycrylic, polyurethane, or wipe on some furniture wax (my favorite, but the polyurethane is more durable for a kitchen). That combo will get you a pretty consistent glassy smooth finish. You can't skip it, or else you'll end up covered in brush strokes and/or pit marks from a roller (especially if you're using the wrong kind of roller). For wood and other smooth surfaces, you want a foam roller. Thick woolly looking rollers are made for stuff like stucco and brick, if you use them on a smooth surface you'll end up with a weird texture.
You can get away with 120 grit in a pinch, but you'll need to baby it so you don't break through the paint. Don't murder your paint job by scrubbing it away on accident. Also clay based paints are fabulously self leveling but can be pricey. They will save you a lot of time though. Chalked works well too and you can mix your own to save cash.
Kat Horton just subscribe to your channel let's see some panting vlogs lol I'm doing my van and need some ideas ✌
@@rubbertrampstokesy2047 I have a different channel for art stuff, but have been neglecting it for a while now 😅 need to get back to it
i realize it is kinda off topic but does anybody know of a good place to stream newly released movies online ?
@Malcolm Jameson meh I would suggest flixportal. Just google for it :) -emilio
@Emilio Zahir Thank you, I went there and it seems to work :D Appreciate it !
The antiques police are not coming for you two anymore. You have properly repurposed that old piece. It looks awesome. 👍 good job!
The cabinet looks fantastic, you did a great job!
That's looking great. It was well worth taking the risk. It has a lot of character.
Looks amazing guys!!! Love copper, it’s going to look so snazzy with the splash back.
Bee’s “whyyyyy” whilst sticking the carpet on the weird bit cracked me up 😂😂😂
Your van is going to look so so nice and cosy once it is all finished I love that colour :D Teddy
Love the copper pipe idea! Looking sick guys 👌
AMAZING !!!!! LOOKING FABULOUS ALREADY !!!!!cant wait for the next installment... thanks for sharing.
It looks incredible!! I can’t get over it 😍
I so enjoy your vids and look forward to seeing this all come together.
Wonderfully done, I love what you both done so far. The copper trimming is a popper, I'm excited for you.😱😁😁😁❤
OMG! You guys NAILED IT. SO FIRE.
You guys are such a cute couple. True pals.
Wow! Great job guys, looks fabulous!
That cabinet looks awsome guys...
So beautiful! Very inspiring. :D I’m preparing to build a shipping container tiny house and this video is SO helpful. Thank you.
Copper and green goes really well - of course copper actually goes green when it oxidises so there’s something natural about the combination. Lovely job!
Nice one! Copper looks so cool.
Love how you have deconstructed the cabinet for this unique look in your van. Great job.
That looks fantastic. Well done.
Oh, it is sooooo attractive! Good job u all
It looks fantastic! A labour of love 💚 well done both. Can't wait to see what's next 😊
I see the Ikia pencils are coming in handy on the home made scribing tool. The bulkhead ended up looking marvellous guys
Just catching up with your vlogs this piece looks stunning!! Love both of yours enthusiasm for each task :) so fun to watch, keep em coming x ~bex
thanks to you guys I just bought my windows for my Van build out from Van windows direct, I gave you guys a shout out and they did give me 10 % off...
Looking good, and I don't mean Theo's socks and sandals! We had classic Stirling caravans before the millenium, and they had a chrome bar on top of the cupboards, similar idea to your copper piping, which looks stunning. Best wishes from Susan, wife of Edward in UK.
Well done! It's beautiful!
As I said on Instagram, I love it. Converted furniture makes a van look so homely. Well done, guys! 👍🏼😉
Amazing!!! Great job guys!
Nice work guys ....it's looking good
Absolutely gorgeous!!!
When using the pipe cutter, just put it on the pipe so it just holds on ,spin it round once then twist tighter round once and then repeat until pipe is cut.I know its to late now but for future reference.
Well, I take my hat off to you, this is beautiful, copper piping is wonderful! I would do mini racks of more of it instead of shelves by the door, to hang stuff up with 'S' hooks, but I think whatever you do it is a real beauty. Love it!
Really nice job, looking good. Well done
That is cutest tiny hammer ever! Looks well used/loved, too... I don't know if you've thought of this, but finding a place for a fire extinguisher in a converted van tends to be a strangely difficult thing for some people. Most of them tend to stick it under one of the front seats, but since that space is completely separate from the rest of the van due to your build, maybe you'd want to save a section of that empty space by the door for a small extinguisher, so it's readily available (whether its inside the van or outside that you need it). So that's my thought... LOVE how that walnut stain really makes the sage painted shelves pop, BTW! Very Nice!
Yeah, having the fire extinguisher in the space next to the sliding door, just underneath the carbuncle (I think that's the technical term) is a *very good idea!* And hopefully they'll never need to use it.
Also, a fire blanket. And rehearse how to use it.
Great job 💪🏻 love the green colour and the copper rail 😎😍
Well done guys, looks great! 👍
Love it guys, well worth the hassle!! Love it!!!!!!
Love the copper pipe you put onto that. Such a great touch. Looks great guys 👌
The colour is great! I really like copper used in a van. Might want to put a light inside the copper tube?? I've seen that done and it's a clever use of light in a small space!
It looks beautiful great job guys you two work well together. This is Ivana from Canada
Great job on the unit keep up the good work both 👍
Fabulous!! I love everything about it.
Looking great guys
Tanx guys for sharing all your good work at the van! Been following you for a while, since I'm working on a Van myself:) Nice tips all the way:) Love the way you guys re-use old furniture as well, and make it your own! Lots of love from an artist in Norway who's working on a studio/livingspace Van:)
I love what you guys have done with the vintage furniture piece! The copper piping just finishes it up nicely. So unique 💕 I'm looking forward to seeing what you do to finalize the kitchen. 😉👍
I use a 2 part wood filler, it dries in 15mins rock hard and can be painted straight away. Also water based satinwood paint is much better as it dries in a few hours and doesn’t stink.
This never gets old. Who's watching in 2022...?
Amazing guys! I just enjoy you two so much. Much love. Safe travels. Namaste.
Gorgeous. .I used the same green for the table legs of my kitchen table...the rustoleum clear wax for chalk paint over the top not only makes it waterproof and seals it but it gives the paint depth and looks 100% nicer...well worth getting a tin from b&q...makes a world of difference for a really shabby chic farmhouse look xxx
If you want it to look a bit distressed sand the edges or just some of them a tiny bit before applying the wax. Not only does the wax seal the paint so it doesn't stain and chip off or absorb moisture, it stops it looking so flat and gives it a slight lustre
I love the copper piping! it now looks “steampunk”!
It came out so nice 😍
Great jobs guys
Great job guys
Oooo I'm so excited for you!! So frickin BEAUTIFUL!! Scribing... In all the million videos I've watched to prepare for our skoolie convert, I don't think I've seen that done...or I didn't retain it. I DID NOW, THOUGH! 🤞🏽🤪 And the lil pocket tubey cutter thingy...niiiiiiccce! So good, guys!! 😘👌🏽 Gorgeous. Come to the US and do my build with me. 😉
Great work guys ....
Looking fantastic! ✌🏻💕🌈
I think a better use of the space by the door, instead of tiny shelves, would be for mounting your fire extinguisher - keep it at arm's length but somewhere where you're not going to be tripping over it. But fair play, I feared for that cabinet unnecessarily. It looks SO good.
Looks so amazing guys.
Nice laugh at 1.43! Well done on your conversion. You're doing a great job.😎
I want to rent that farm building after you guys 😁
I’m a socks and crocs man myself lol awesome job guys looks awesome. Be amazing if you decided to put a stain glass window type thing in like you discussed before 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Very cool idea !
👍👍👍👍brilliant well done!
It looks amazing. You two are so inspiring to me. Some day I would love to diy too :)
It's beautiful! I love the copper! ✌🐧
Looks fab👍
Love it's looking great. Wood is such a warm looking wall lining. I love it in my truck. But it's NZ wood so it's interesting to see what you use in the UK
Its looking beautiful. Great job Theo. Much 💘& God bless!😘💖✌
Beautiful!
For a better finish when painting screws: stick them into the cardboard, so they don't lie in the fresh paint.
And btw: it looks amazing what you've done to this van already! Can't wait to see the final result!
That’s a great tip! Thanks 🙏🏻
Steinn yes thanks too!
You're welcome 😊
Don't forget to lacquer the whole pipe assembly with a special spray can lacquer that you can buy so that it doesn't tarnish and discolour.
Super cool!
It turned out very well nice one both you should be very pleased with yourselves your grandad would be proud too ❤️ another good video 👍maybe one day our paths will cross and we can check out your van and you can take a look at ours (only just started it) 😁 thanks again both 😉👍❤️
Just fab..love the copper pipe..😍
Thank you!
Heads up!
I was just watching a "doing property up in Portugal" prog on TV.
They mentioned "wood is very expensive! Bring it with you!!"
(They exported scaffold boards, I Think for stair treads)
Roger, can I ask what channel you viewed the Portugal property on, please?
Luv luv luv it!!!!
Don't normally comment freaking awesome 👍
Love love love the cabinet it rocks! Can’t wait to see when your kitchen goes in! So excited ... how sad am I??😂😂😂😂 x
Not sad at all! Really nice to know others are just as enthusiastic as us 😊
Nice colour! I like that green... I'm waiting to move in to my apartment, the walls have this green colour!
Lovely colour!
Good job guys looks fantastic.. but please when cutting ur clalding keep ur fingers a wee bit further away from the Blade in case it kicks .. loving the vids .. the pipe rail is fantastic
I have never clicked on one of your videos faster, I have been so excited to see what this ended up looking like! I can’t believe how amazing this looks! Great job guys 👍🏻 Will you continue the walnut stain on the rest of the wood in the van?
Love it!!
Looking great!
Tip of the day , dont buy wood filler use any sawdust mix it with wood glue fill and sand job done ! Also check out crackle glaze adds great weathering .
Old joiner's trick!
poulsonarrow I was just going to suggest that lol My dad & husband both did that. Then you also have the same colour as the wood if using sawdust from the same project.
Looks fab. :)
Solvoautosol ,for the copper pipe !!!!
Great, you may find you need an additional pipe bracket at each end of the long length if it is to take ant weight and be supportive. Many thanks AJ
You did a great job, but if you'd left that gap in the bottom shelf, you could have installed a narrow door into the cab (I'm assuming you don't have 3 seats up front, of course).
For the pipe cutter you start gently then tighten it abit ever time you rotate other wise you will damage the blade and possibly the pipe
I was sceptical about the Frankenstein job, but it’s turned out well! I do think you should remove the wooden trim and continue the copper pipe theme on all the shelves (including the arch ones). It will tie in nicely to the copper splash back and the look will be consistent 🙂
That kitchen unit looks amazing !! Love the copper pipe too - is that the same piping you will be using for your electrical bits? It must be great to see your vision turning into reality.
I HATE cleaning out paint trays. When you were about to pour the paint in I was willing you to put the tray in a bag first or use cling film so you could just throw that away & leave a nice clean tray haha
