Hey Flight attendant here :) please do not ever feel ashamed to ask for a seat belt extender! It is no big deal for us to grab one for you and deliver it discreetly. Just got off a flight where the turbulence got so bad we were lifted off our seats. We want to keep everyone safe! Now as far as the purchasing a second seat it really depends. Of course if a flight is normally kinda open probably not necessary to buy another seat. However you know yourself and if you know you need a second seat it is more comfortable for you and your neighbors to get a second seat, especially if it's a long flight.

@@LifeChanges83 I am 5'6 285 lbs had no issues except for one flight with Delta it was a small older plane. I had to ask for one. I felt a tad embarrassed so I got nervous and my connecting flight I asked before I was even seated down I saw the flight attendant and asked for one and she brought me one discreetly and actually didn't even need it for that flight. The flight attendants are really amazing about being discreet and not judgmental. Hope this helps

No one needs to apologize for who they are but they do need to apologize for taking up other people's space that they paid for! I am a big girl, so believe me I sympathize. however, flying is already stressful and it is already a small space. If you encroach on people space you need to be apologetic and do your best to minimize their added discomfort by purchasing an extra space seat or 2 seats or whatever is needed for them not to lose their right to what they purchased

I'm thinking that airlines should have a sample seat at check-in, of you don't fit, you dont fit. You need another seat. If there isnt one because the flight is full, it's not fair to expect someone else to stand or lose their flight because you didn't plan accordingly.

There's a trend with this subject. Larger people don't see it as a problem, however stick 3 plus size people in a row and see how your flight goes. Other people shouldn't have to be inconvenienced by others for whatever reason.
Me personally it wouldn't bother me for a short hour flight but any longer then I'd rather wait for another flight then have my personal space invaded like that. And that's not down to my fault but the larger person sat next to me.
That poor guy that had to stand for a 7 hour flight because of someone else. Paying for a seat he couldn't even use smh

Don't apologize for who you are, no. But DO apologize if you are knocking the living shit out of people with your hips as you walk down the aisle. Same applies to a thin person if they bump someone hard.

If you bump into someone while on the plane. Know you surrounding and understand that you may invade other peoples space! Apologies for intruding other peoples space! Its called being self aware!

Great video! I recently flew from Kansas City, to Kuwait...Totaling 15 hours in the air, and boarding 3 planes. This was the first time flying at my current size: 30W. I learned that people are not as judgemental on planes as I thought. The flight attendants discreetly handed me a seatbelt extension, and asked several times if I was comfortable. They allowed me to board first, so I wouldn't have to bump everyone as I walked past, and I was treated with the utmost respect. Now, on the flights back...Rude AF in Kuwait (asked me if I flew before, because of my size, and I was like...how do you think I got to Kuwait you dick), and once on the plane, no problems. Flew to France, and they were ABSOLUTELY LOVELY! Hopefully I won't run into a bad scenario. I have been truly blessed to have good experiences, and I am usually the biggest person on the plane. I snuggle up to my husband, and I try to stand up or walk around a bit to avoid leg swelling. Just because people are overweight doesn't mean they can't enjoy life and travel too. There are far more important issues in life other than worrying about if you're going to sit next to a snuggly, fat person on a plane. People need to get over it!

If we have pod for our seat just like u then understand why we may get annoyed uncomfortable and frustrated if you are eating into our already small space. It’s not just a case of get over it.

I bought an extender years ago, and I'm so glad I did. Some planes don't accept your own personal extender, but all one has to do is ask. II bought my extender on eBay years ago at a very affordable price. I also sit in the window seat.
Due to some back issues, I have to ask for transport to the gate, and sometimes, that can be challenging if there are no carts available. Unless I set it up beforehand, I have to ask for an attendant to wheel me to the gate, but I make sure to have some extra cash in order to tip either the cart driver or attendant. I make sure to also use the bathroom before I board the plane, as well, so I don't have to bother with needing to use the bathroom in an airplane.

Nothing worse then sitting next to a +++ size person who won’t try to give you room.
I flew to IL last year and had to sit next to a woman who just melted into the seat, hogged the arm rest to a point that her arm was spilling onto mine . she gave me a weird look every time her arm touched mine and it took everything in me not to just say “ I can’t help it if your arm is literally flowing onto mine”
I don’t think large people realize that trying to make yourself smaller for a large person is extremely uncomfortable for more then 30 minutes. Just take the aisle seat and be happy with it. Being 6’3 isn’t comfortable on a flight. So don’t get angry that you have so much fat in under your skin that even though I’m trying my hardest to shove my own elbows into my side, your skin is touching me without you even trying. Also I never complained but when that lady went to the bathroom It was heaven for about 5 minutes while I stretched my scrunched up legs and arms, then back to hell for another 40 minutes when she came back and took over the arm rest.
P.S I traded her my aisle seat for middle when she started complaining that she was cramped, and she still would just take over the arm rest.

I am a plus size woman who has to fly for work. First, let me say, It is agonizing for me. I make myself sick with anxiety for days leading up to the flight. That being said, I try VERY hard not to encroach in the space of others. I fit with the armrest with no problems, in fact, I prefer it down as a barrier between me and my neighbor. What is most difficult for me is keeping my arms inside my arm rest because I have very broad shoulders. Being the largest woman on the plane, NOT weight wise but in height and build sucks. I spend my entire flight scrunched up as well.

    1. Ask for an extender when boarding (Just keep theirs and use it on other flights! A Delta stewardess told me to keep it!)
    2. Preboard if you can (I felt self conscious about it before but then realized it isn't hurting anyone and it makes me feel so much better)
    3. Sit in the aisle seat

I had the good fortune I was on Delta and it wasn’t crowded and I had bought the upgrade to comfort plus and the seat I was in the armrest didn’t move (old plane) and the attendant let me move to a row of three seats and I had my own row to myself. Another tip is if you fly American Airlines, they have regional jets that have a 2x1 configuration. These are ideal as they have more leg room and you are next to the window and you have your own seat to yourself, which I do lift the armrest up if I feel a bit snug.

  • @ebonywahine

I have flown a lot for work and pleasure over several decades. I have always been overweight to fat, but the really real is that the sears have become smaller with less leg room over the years, as the corporations try to stuff more folks on each flight, especially the more popular routes. The act of traveling by air, even in economy, used to have an air of glamour attached to it, now we are like spam in a can hurtling through the air. I appreciated most your tip about buying an extender!! Great one! I always sit in the window seat, but have been stuck in the middle on more than a couple occasions Urgh! Happy Trails!

and here I thought it was just common curtesy to always get up if someone not on the aisle seat has to go to the bathroom. I don't care what size you are skinny or plus size, I'm always going to get up because it's just easier that way.
I wish seats in general weren't so small. Everyone would just be happier
I had a 6 hour red eye flight and My seat wouldn't go back. Everyone is sleeping, and this man behind was extremely large like 400lbs which stopped my chair going back at all. I sat straight up the whole night flight miserable. I had to stop trying to recline my chair because the guy woke up upset. it was a full flight and I didn't even bother getting the flight attendant.
Best solution is bigger seats for everyone.

I was fine until I realized u needed an extender ,it seemed that everyone on my flight was tired bc quickly everyone was buckled in and quiet ready to go.I stopped the attendant and whispered for an extender ,but it was so quiet it was if I was yelling .The couple next to me where very nice they smiled ,and the husband who was in the middle even tried to wiggle over a but to give my hug hips a bit more room.My anxiety was so high and I was so tired I feel asleep ,so that helped me not to have an actual full on anixety attack. It sounds crazy but until I loose weight I refuse to fly again ,I just can't handle the stress ,I don't travel much, and when I do it's to visit family, so I bus it in which I always have two seats ( bc the bus is always half full)and is less stressful for me ...

Fly Southwest, buy 2 seats. In the middle name portion put "XS", after your flight call and request a refund. Or you can request one in person when you arrive and hopefully they have some availabile.

  • @kole1ful

Honestly my greatest fears with flying are: flying with children (especially toddlers) who scream and cry during the flight, and sitting next to a huge person who will spill into my seat. I think there should be separate flights or better seats for bigger folks and flights for people with children. Like when you book your ticket, have the option of selecting your weight, also if you want to be on a flight with and potentially sit next to a big person and if you are willing to be on a flight with children. No prejudice at all, but I just want a comfortable flight, and I don’t mind paying a little extra for it.
But a quick question tho, don’t you think that if you are too big to fit a regular flight seat, you should maybe consider changing somethings??? 🤔🤔

Seat belt extender is so great! I'm traveling with my friend who is concerned she won't fit in the seat, but I don't want to buy it for her (she might get offended). I'm just always wanting to be prepared... But I'm sure if we ask the flight attendant it'll be cool.

I love your extender idea! I've developed a little trick to ask for one n' keep it private that's worked pretty well over the past few years. :) I just write my request out for one on the message field of my texting app & show it to the stewardess after I've beckoned her over, gesturing discreetly. :) It's helped SO much, and has proven a great way to keep my need for an extender private, if I do end up needing one. :)

The nice thing with Southwest flights are that the seats are pretty spacious. I've been taking 16 hour flights on Philippine Airlines and let me tell you, if you're plus size, it isn't fun to ride economy class, even in a front row seat, because the seats are so narrow! If ever anyone decides to fly PAL, save up and fly business class.

On South west you can buy and extra seat and when you get back you can call and ask for a refund. Yes you will have to shell out the extra money up front but you do get it back. Its an easy way to make sure you have enough room. You will get the extra seat pass that you set on the seat next to you AND YOU CAN PRE BOARD. You'll be one of the first 5 people to board the plane which allows you to choose pretty much any row you want.

On a day in which I had 2 flights. The first flight was a bit uncomfortable because the lady next to me was taking up a couple of inches of my back seat. Makes matters worse is that she wasn't actually larger than me so she had no reason to take part of my seat. I had to tell her to move because I wasn't able to fully sit on the seat. On the next flight, their was a guy who was clearly much, much larger than me. He had the isle seat just like the lady did and he didn't take much of my space. I was able to fully lie on the seat and the only issue was that my arm was against his.

I am a plus size women. I wear size 15-16. I can say I fit fine not perfect in a economy seat. I feel for us plus size women the aisle seats and the Window seats are definitely the best. For me I hate people in my space and I hate being in theirs so I either push my self close enough to the wall or out towards the eisle. For me if the person isnt all the way in my space to where I feel claustrophobic and they smell good im fine. 💁

Please, I DO NOT urinate in those nasty bathrooms. I am 5'10" and wear 16/18/20 (tops). My height and size make bathroom runs uncomfortable. I urinate just before boarding. I don't need a seatbelt extender, but I do put up the arm rest for more room. I get the window seats because I like the view. Middle seats are out and I don't like everyone brushing up on me for aisle seats.

I'm with you. I usually fly Delta and some seat belts are shorter than others. I don't even care anymore I'll just ask for a seat belt extender if I can't buckle it. It's never been a problem before. Also I choose a window seat so I can try to be as far away as my seat mate as possible. But as I usually fly alone I get paired with another solo passenger. It makes for some interesting conversations sometimes.

  • @caseyvee4419

Something about flying while fat: all of these videos I see are addressing commercial flights. On private planes, charter or otherwise, there may be weight restrictions. This is because some of the smaller planes can literally be out of balance (I am not joking) with a large person in a seat, and takeoff weight limits might be encountered. On a 4 place Mooney, for example, the useful weight limit including ALL passengers and ALL luggage, is about 1000 lbs. So, pilot and his gear is 200. The other 3 people who have hired the plane cannot exceed 800 lbs, WITH luggage COMBINED. Laws of physics set the limit, not political correctness.
