    Thank you for info on installing drivers. Ironically, I sold my Dell 4100 and now don't have to install Drivers.

    Are these worth the $100+ ones on ebay? Didn't see anything cheap except a Dimension 8400 and i bought it. It was 32 bucks usd+ 40 shipping. Came from a collector's house and the guy who acquired it powered it on. Hopefully it has a hard drive.

    I recently purchased a Compaq Deskpro EN with Windows 98SE installed on it. However, it does not recognize either the CD-ROM drive, or the Floppy drive despite both drives being internal. I have a disc for the Windows 95 OS (which I will install in lieu of Windows 98SE if necessary and/or possible on this machine) but that is a very last resort. The really strange thing is, because it doesn't recognize when you insert a CD-ROM into the disc drive, I'm not sure how I was able to install it from the installation CD that came with it. Regardless, it does not register the Floppy drive as being there whatsoever despite it being internal. All that to say, I would love it if I could get both drives to be recognized by the computer so that I may use them. Furthermore, if you know of any safe drivers, this computer only seems to come with running 16-colors instead of 256-colors. I found some drivers for that (though I am uncertain if they will actually work given my luck). If I could get my computer to recognize at the very least the CD-ROM drive (preferably the floppy drive also), I should - hypothetically - be able to install the aforementioned drivers. But first I need my computer to recognize that I do, in fact, have both drives built into the computer. Can you help me? I would greatly appreciate it. :D If you need the exact specs of my computer to fully help me, I will gladly provide them if asked. :D
    By the way, I have ONLY the installation CD and the respective floppy disk. I have no other driver disks.

    Sir, Recently picked up a IBM "PCjr", all manuals, keyboard, power supply, many CD's, video cable, but with out monitor. If interested in photos, and/or to purchase, please contact me. Tell Billy to. (P.S: haven't had time to work on Dell 4100; It looks new and will sell also. I know you can get audio and internet connection to work. Photo's available if desired.

    Hey Jay, I just took delivery of my dell dimensions XPS t450 and I’m having some power issues with it since I changed the time on the bios ( I know unrelated but still ). I changed the time, turned the pc off went to turn it back on and zip, not even the diagnostic light. My question is, you know the 6 aux power reserve, does that need to be plugged in as I believe it’s the power supply at fault and was going to try my dimension 2350 power supply just to prove my theory.

      because windows nt is inferior to windows 9x
      none of the applications have physical access to the hardware, great for stability, horrible for realtime applications
      most applications were written for windows 9x and windows nt was still unsupported until windows xp came out

    Why so many command lines at the start of your install? I only dimly remember far fewer commands like setup c: ? Did you remember to bring the w98 disc to your wedding?

    • @TheFlyingScotsman
      @TheFlyingScotsman  7 років тому

      The reason there are so many lines in my Autoexec is because I have a UK keyboard attached to the machine so the Keyb command has to run. The regional settings also mean the MODE command will run at startup changing the codepage to 437. Also because I have a Creative Labs Sound Blaster sound card, it has DOS drivers that launch on startup.

    • @taketimeout2share
      @taketimeout2share 7 років тому

      Ok. Surely a keyboard is a keyboard and couldnt you alter the regional settings after the instal?
      And finally how did you get to learn to use all these commands/n Did you do a course or read loads of books or just pick it up as you went along?
      Thanks for quick reply.

    • @TheFlyingScotsman
      @TheFlyingScotsman  7 років тому

      Actually Windows puts those lines there if you set the keyboard layout and/or system locale to anything other than United States of America.

    • @taketimeout2share
      @taketimeout2share 7 років тому

      Guess I am not a power user like yourself. Mode command nor codepage 437 means nothing to me.
      But thanks for your time.

    • @TheFlyingScotsman
      @TheFlyingScotsman  7 років тому

      I'm going to be honest here I have never written out this command manually. All this is done automatically by Windows if you're using an alternative keyboard layout (like the British one I use which has one more key than the US layout) or system locale (Telling Windows at install time which country you are located in so things like date format, 12/24 hour time format and number formatting can be set according to your nation). Just by selecting these options when setting up Windows, or even changing the settings after Windows has been installed will update the Autoexec.bat file accordingly. As to the sound card, when I installed it's drivers, the installer also updated config.sys and autoexec.bat automatically to reflect how the sound card had been set up on my system.

    • @billthewhovian
      @billthewhovian 4 роки тому

      @@M453-p8n Because Jay formatted his hard drive (which he had to do) He would have to get the Windows ME (the original windows version he had) disk and reformat his hard drive and reinstall or he could trick the installer into upgrading to ME by renaming two files win.com and winver.exe respectfully, however, doing things this way can lead to problems for non upgrade versions of Windows, namely applications not working and issues regarding the control panel.
      Windows ME has also got allot of issues within itself so I would recommend the first option of reformat and reinstall especially when it comes to Windows ME but really what Jay did here is way better although 98SE is older than ME it is way better and more user friendly (In my opinion) than ME ever was. But yes reformat and reinstall ME would be the way I would recommend you do if you wanted ME back for whatever reason.
      However an upgrade (using an upgrade disk) to ME would be another option (Also much quicker as you get to keep all apps and might only need to reinstall drivers) but with ME's record of upgrade issues I would recommend upgrading to Windows 2000 or XP instead of ME.
      I hope that answers your question. :)
