About 20 years ago I bought a house in a newer HOA 'hood on the East Central Fl beaches. If I had a square foot of dead grass, the fussy St Augustine expert committee would come over and set me straight. Just leave a garden hose on the lawn and they knocked on the door or left us a note. I moved out to a more rural area and bought a house surrounded by three acres of maple/oak forest. Can't see my house from the road. Much better and no one can say anything about our food plants.

Just watched this video with my husband who loves the outcome of gardening but not the effort! (Obviously, the lawn/garden is my domain.)
We were howling at the native plant upgrade of builder plants!
Living in an HOA, we don’t have much freedom to create a native garden in the front but we are creating a native and Florida friendly garden in the back. Losing the grass.
People are looking at our yard and scratching their heads. “Did you know that you have a lot of dead grass here?” Uh yeah! Isn’t it great?!
Once that’s done, we will try our hand (and when I say we, I really mean me) at a native garden in the side yard using the great ideas from this channel!
HOA friendly in the front and environmentally friendly everywhere else!

🤣🤣🤣 You crack me up 😂😂😂 My front yard is tree mulch, crushed oyster shell and WEEDS/GRASS that's growing through everything that's meant to kill the weeds/grass! I lost my yard people (after 8 1/2 years) because the owner moved to northern Florida and I really haven't felt like looking for a company that'll be happy providing non-poisonous weed control and mulch a couple of times a year for the front yard only. Right now I'm doing OK with backyard (shaded by live oak) so can handle with a weed-wacker. I'm still learning about growing anything in west central Florida so can offer no suggestions for plants. Thank you for your humor, wit and knowledge of FL plants. 🥰 😎

Bring back some of your sweet potato vines to the front while your natives and milkweed get established. If nothing else, they will keep the weeds at bay. Ornamental sweet potato vines in planters are the rage (pinkies up!)
And when you get your grasses, add a couple stalks of lemon grass for a spray of vibrant light green. Great culinary addition for Ben; refreshing teas, great zip in curries and grilling marinades, full of antioxidants, etc. etc. AND grows like crazy. Good for chop and drop, and wonderful smelling wherever you apply it, days after you chop and drop.
Even in my un-woke neighborhood, fire bush and coontie are sneaking in, and not a boo! from the HOA.

One idea is peanut plants. I don't know the scientific name for them. They do not grow peanuts. They do have pretty little yellow flowers that speckles around the plant itself. They're wonderful on spreading across the ground and giving you little tiny yellow flowers. As soon as I can find them I will get them in my new yard. Have fun and have a wonderful day.

    • @jlbutters2
      @jlbutters2 Рік тому +1

Perennial peanuts ‐ a versatile groundcover that can be planted statewide and blooms all summer long with cheerful golden flowers.
It can be planted on its own as a groundcover in larger beds or used as a lawn alternative in areas that receive low levels of foot traffic. It also can be inter-planted within some existing lawns.
This spreading groundcover is particularly effective on sites that have problems with erosion, since the rhizomes grow to form a mat that helps hold soil in place.
Perennial peanut is evergreen in frost-free areas of the state. In colder parts of the state, it will drop its leaves, exposing its brown rhizomes. If you're using perennial peanut as a lawn substitute, you can overseed the area with ryegrass to keep the area looking green throughout the winter.
Some of the best features of perennial peanut are its resistance to nematodes, pathogens, and drought. Plus it requires little fertilizer.

I’ve been doing different native grasses. Not familiar with them, I’ve planted just a few plants of different ones.
I’m terrible at names, but I’ll try to remember to get you the names & description of my favorites.
One is definitely “blue tops”. They look “grassy” - but get blue ball shaped cowers in the fall. I *love* them.
Another suggestion, I’ve been following a butterfly gardener “Butterfly Inspirations” - I think - and she throws zinnia seeds in her largely native garden.
Very beautiful & the butterflies love zinnias
They also love old fashion pintas 😉
