Sanda people don’t train for throwing in a way to land close or in a dominant position in the ground. It certainly happens from the opponent struggling and hanging on. Still easy to pounce once they throw, though.
Honestly wish there was a Kung fu equivalent that was as popular as karate combat. Sure there’s the Sanda/Kuoshou competitions but I wish there was a more popular platform for kung fu fighters regardless of what style they rep
The most powerful thing I've seen in sanda is their ability to dish out lightning fast side kicks. That's probably the least thrown strike in MMA and even kickboxing but they use it SO effectively with their speed and flexibility. There is a brazilian female fighter in the UFC whose name escapes me right now and she is doing REALLY well

I kinda disagree, mainly because the whole point of Sanda is being very well rounded standup fighters. Sanda is about being pretty solid at every component of standup fighting. If you consider that a quality that makes you an MMA fighter, then all Sanda fighters are MMA fighters via your logic

Since sanda is 2 thirds kungfu, I' d have to say kungfu is officially back.Some of those Russian wingchun guys could do good in this competition. Till could do good too. We've officially rebounded from the disaster bout when Xu Xiadong mopped the floor with Lei Lei 7 years ago.

Okinawa Karate-DO have a lot of Grappling skills it's complete, Some Guys say Karate Combat are not Karate they are wrong people think Karate are only a Striking style but that's wrong.
It's because of the "Japanese" karate that (which is based in kendo ruleset and fighting fundamentaals) is heavily focus in striking and sadly, the most know worldwide.
My dad got a chance back then to train karate back in okinawa around 70s. The spar just brutal.. and yes they have a takedown, my dad learn kyoukushin which is heavily on striking but mix it with silat

The most dominant point sparring karateka- who also competed in karate combat- aghayev is well known for it. So in all styles throws and sweeps are-or should be- part of the training.

Sanda fighter actually has real venom in his ground and pound too, good leg control when the opponent's grounded. Seems to give him a massive advantage in this type of competitition
It wasn’t a question mark kick. It was a roundhouse kick, but no roundhouse telegraph. So instead of raising his leg from the side like a regular roundhouse, he brought it straight up, making it harder to read for the opponent. Very Chinese! Done well.
Would love to see you cover the martial arts taught in PE programs worldwide. Some schools even requires you to learn martial arts for PE. Would be interesting to see what they're like to compare with "average" training. An example I know for PE martial arts in general schools are Karate in Okinawa, Arnis in Filipino high schools, Judo/Kendo in Japan and so on. I don't get the "karate" part in the "karate combat" title. The rules are against the karate style and more in line in MMA. I think any other full-contact martial art entering the ring would have advantage over karate. Especially on heavyweight categories.
It mirrors how older karate styles traditionally were more well-rounded akin to mma. That said, the direction of allowing sanda, kickboxers, and muay thai might just be turning it into another kickboxing promotion in contrast to its beginnings
They have changed the rules a few times, it's a fairly new promotion, so I think they are working the kinks out. Bas Rutten and GSP are also pretty heavily involved, so I think that may be bringing more of an mma influence to it.
When it started, the competitors were exclusively karate blackbelts. The fights from 2018 - 2021 were great. Since then, rules have been changed in an attempt to steal UFC and One's audience. And the current president seems to have a preference for bjj instead of karate.

Karate Combat has become an MMA league. I say this is great. Either karate evolves or it dies.

Karate was originally very well rounded and had answers for every range of combat, and still is if you go to a proper school from a proper lineage.
