I Ruined My Boat ! While Trying to look for new fishing spots

- while I was browsing the new marsh system where I have never been before, I ran over an Oyster bed and got my boat stuck. I was going to wait for high tide to push It off but as the day was going by it was getting colder. so I ended up reaching for help. fortunately I was able to get pulled out but unfortunate for my boat; the whole bottom of it is ruined from the Oysters.
Thus far no leak. But it has lots of big Gouges and chunks of gelcoat came out throughout the whole bottom.
Yeah I've been watching them kayak videos in those marshes too and wondering if I could get my big ass 22 ft CC in there. Thanks for taking one for the team and letting me know my big ass don't need to be in there. I once heard that there's 2 kinds of captains. Ones that have run aground and ones that haven't...yet. I can honestly say I have and had to get my crew to jump out and shove me back off the sand bar. Luckily it was just sand and mud. No oysters. I'm sure they can do some damage like a giant cheese grater and your a block of Kraft! Tight lines and better luck!
It’s doable if you do your research and plan ahead. Tides, routes, areas to cover. unlike I did. Now I will be needing to re-do the gel coat for the whole bottom of my boat.
my 1st day owning my boat I ran aground in the old inner coastal near freeport, texas. My buddy hopped out and pushed me off. Said it happens to everywhere but I would not take a 22ft CC in a marsh system. If anything just stay at the mouth in the bayou and fish for trout.

I hope the aftermath wound up being repairable.
I just got an Uber cheap 1436 Jon for this that I am starting to fix up and then mod for stuff like this.
Keeping it Uber light with a 5hp 2-stroke on a Jack plate. Should be easy to push-pole too.
I will still cringe when I hit things… but will only be worried that it is still solid. A $400 jon boat hull is cheaper than a beater kayak. Lighter than my old pedal drive kayak too.
It’s bad, oysters ripped the Gelcoat deep. Luckily, it didn’t penetrate the laminate. So I didn’t find any leak. But Gelcoat repair of the whole bottom is going to cost me a hefty price

Ouch. Oysters will definitely tear into things. I even had some slice into my old kayak a few times like razorblades.
At least it is repairable... even though it is painful.
I had been sitting here for the last year or so debating to go either fiberglass or to get a Jon boat.
I didn't want to have to worry about corrosion (+1 for fiberglass) but also was worried about price, ease of repair, and how the hull would hold up to things like what just happened to you.
It turned out to be a +3 for the Jon on all of that second set of categories. The first category, corrosion, turned out to not be a big problem either after doing research.
I just got a basic Jon that has open/visible hull everywhere... and will be coming back with aluminum rivnuts I will be putting into the ribs of the hull to add decking everywhere myself. I will spray it down with fluid film once a season. Taking the decking back off every winter for a solid wash/rinse/inspection...then apply another layer of fluid film. Apparently, there are plenty of folks out there that leave theirs sitting in salt for years at a time (NOT recommended) and they hold up fine.
Then, I found out about Aluminum Brazing rods. They are about 4x stronger than aluminum with a melting point of 700F vs the 1200F of Aluminum. They are made of a corrosion resistant aluminum alloy. It is literally just like soldering with a cheap propane torch! I got my 2018 Alumacraft 1436 hull for $400... and did the repairs in about 30 minutes. It had been dragged up and down a concrete ramp a billion times and the very back had micro holes worn through. Never even had a motor attached to it.
I will be stripping off the paint and adding "Gator Glide" to the bottom. It is an epoxy coating that adds a slick layer to the bottom... that can be repaired in small sections as needed. Going to paint the rest of the hull white with gray decking. Then adding Millennium Marine seats to make it uber comfortable out there. Should be about $1500 into it at that point... and be focusing on a quality fish finder and trolling motor. Though, I did just buy a new $1600 aluminum trailer.
Dang, so sorry you went thru that. Not sure if you mentioned it but did you attempt to push off with your push pole? and could you share what marsh/bayou that was to help prevent others from making that costly mistake with their boat? God bless
It’s the marsh to the right of Swan lake boat ramp. I did get off and tried to push but it was really stuck. Oyster bed sucks lol Here’s the ordinance, be safe. (28.9882385, -95.2500346).

I have done it once but really slow I was lucky just a couple of scrapes
These boats can go stupid shallow but not foolproof lol 🫣

Highly Unprofessional !! Ha !! ...if you fish long enough, it happens to the best. Oysters on the hull is like fingernails on a chalkboard.
