The Great Jessye Norman (Strauss Im Abendrot -- VIDEO)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 лип 2014
- Richard Strauss (1864-1949)
From Vier Letzte Lieder (Four Last Songs):
Im Abendrot (At Sunset)
Jessye Norman (1945-2019), soprano
Orchestre de la Suisse romande conducted by Wolfgang Sawallisch
Recorded in 1979
Text (Joseph von Eichendorff):
We have through sorrow and joy
gone hand in hand;
From our wanderings, let's now rest
in this quiet land.
Around us, the valleys bow
as the sun goes down.
Two larks soar upwards
dreamily into the light air.
Come close, and let them fly.
Soon it will be time for sleep.
Let's not lose our way
in this solitude.
O vast, tranquil peace,
so deep in the evening's glow!
How weary we are of wandering---
Is this perhaps death?
Wir sind durch Not und Freude
gegangen Hand in Hand;
vom Wandern ruhen wir
nun überm stillen Land.
Rings sich die Täler neigen,
es dunkelt schon die Luft.
Zwei Lerchen nur noch steigen
nachträumend in den Duft.
Tritt her und laß sie schwirren,
bald ist es Schlafenszeit.
Daß wir uns nicht verirren
in dieser Einsamkeit.
O weiter, stiller Friede!
So tief im Abendrot.
Wie sind wir wandermüde--
Ist dies etwa der Tod?
Great Great Great Great. VOICE! - GREAT SINGER! ABSOLUTLY GREAT PERFORMANCE
When I heard this for the first time i was driving my car and had to stop, else I would have crashed. Never before in my life I cried so hard
I had to listen to this after hearing news of her passing!! Truly an inspiration to me and so many others! Her voice will sing on!!
Binah Israel same here. I was drawn here after the news broke
I still cannot believe she is gone. How young she is here!
I played violin as a kid and had a teacher who had me listen to this when I was 14. It showed me the essence of the romantic period and forever changed the way I felt about music’s ability to impact emotion...voice especially. I loved her music and had to come here for a listen as well. So powerful!
You all prolly dont care at all but does anybody know a trick to log back into an Instagram account..?
I was stupid lost the account password. I would love any help you can offer me!
@Jesiah Samson instablaster =)
RIP. - Heinz
I truly believe that Mrs. Jessye Norman had the single most beautiful voice to have ever graced this Earth. God gave her a gift, and it was the voice of an angel.
The high note simultaneously sends a chill down my spine and floods my mind with emotion. That note quite literally pulls the tears out of my eyes.
Not to mention the song itself. If you know the words, meaning, and history, it’s so incredibly touching. What a love song. This is what I want played at my funeral, specifically a recording of Mrs. Norman. I’ll put it in my will if I have to.
Which god? Phenomenal natural talent and years of training and practice. Truly magnificent ... leave god out of it, you devalue it.
@@Thinkwit Which God? Any God anyone may want to choose. A "God" is spiritual to hundreds of million of people. Obviously not you.
Along with this recording, another recording of Jessye's I want played at my funeral is Purcell's "When I Am Laid In Earth"......Remember me.......
@@toddmurphy523 Don't need one. Nor did Ms Norman, even if she thought she did.
@@Thinkwit You do not think for other people, especially Ms. Norman.
One of the most beautiful voices ever, singing one of the most beautiful songs ever. It touches our feelings that take us over when we lose a loved one, but instead of sinking into the earth, it ascends into a glorious sunset as a metaphor for the end of a life.
WildStrawberryFilms yes indeed a perfect match and exquisitely painful in it’s beauty one of my very favourite pairings. I think it connects us all through its power to transcend individuality.
The tenderness in which she sings this is unsurpassed.....
Last Verse English Translation:
"Could I complain? Could I be apprehensive?
Could I lose faith in you and in myself?
No, I already bear your heaven
here within my heart.
And this heart, before it breaks,
still drinks in the fire and savours the light."
Beautiful!
Thank you.
@@georgealderson4424 No, thank you....This notification brought me back to listen to this remarkable voice again. So I, again, thank you...!
@@toddmurphy523 Haha. My pleasure. I have listened to the other three Four Last Songs and this is without doubt my favourite and I may request it for my funeral rather than Ombra Mai Fu, much as I like trees! In any csse, I will be laid in one!
@@georgealderson4424 Oh yes, I must have listened to her full recording of the "Four Last Songs", with Kurt Masur, a thousand times. Her opening of "Fruhling" gives me goose bumps everytime.
Miss Norman’s breath control is unbelievable. This is a beautiful performance in every way; just sublime. The best performance of this song on UA-cam or in the universe. Heavenly.
Outstanding Performance Deeply moving ❤
R.I.P. beautiful, black orchid!
Panayiotis Vyras Black Orchid ❤️
Her skin colour matters not my racist friend.
@@MajorJimPlays - a black Orchid is rare and precious -- DUH!!... I would love to be cherished with such a description.
ps. I am black, a Sop2 and I keep orchids. Let us see the good in the words and efforts of others who only want to share love.
@@MajorJimPlays Obviously, you have a very restricted idea about colours or flowers! And you know little about friendship, for that matter... It would seem that racism is a big issue in your poor mind.
This lady was definitely born to sing These Four Last Songs...
One of the greatest artists of any century and a great noble woman whose loss bring me to tears still.
I've viewed this performance a dozen times or more, and am moved to tears every time.
The world loves and misses Ms Jessye Norman a great deal.
O weiter, stiller Friede!
So tief im Abendrot ,
Wie sind wir wandermüde -
Ist das etwa der Tod?Ruhe in Frieden, große Jessye! Du bist etwas, was bleibt, von diesem schrecklichen, schönen 20. Jahrhundert!
These words are just heartbreaking, especially when sung by Jessye Norman. Thank you.
Please translate, I want to know what you said, thanks!
@@bulova9284 We have, of need and joy,
wandered hand in hand;
From wandering rest we now
amidst the silent land.
The valleys fold around themselves
before the deepening gloom
Alone two larks still soar
Rapt in the twilight perfume.
Stand here and let them whirl,
soon enough comes their rest
Would that we not lose ourselves
within this loneliness.
O utter silent peace!
Suffused with this sun's last breath
Of wandering grow we so weary -
Is this our sense of death?
@@agure111 I thank You,
Beautiful indeed!
I played this wonderful song when my mother died. I was conceived in 1948, born in 1949. This is the last song the maesto wrote in '48. Last words - How tired of wandering are we...or...is this perhaps death.
I just heard this as I was driving home. I sat outside my house, listening, totally mesmerised..oh, the utter joy of life!
One of the great soprano Goddess. In classical music, were entertainment ends; Spirituality begins.
RIP Ms Norman. How incredibly sad in this "stillen Land".
Jessy Normans Kunst ist unsterblich, sie wird die Zeiten überdauern und das zu wissen, ist troestlich❤
Vier Letzte Lieder is one of Richard Strauss' master piece, I never get tired listening to these beautiful pieces. Absolutely Beautiful rendition of Abendrot, R.I.P my Diva, our loss is Heaven's gain.
My favorite, the best. ❤
MY GOD IVE NEVER HEARD ANYTHING KIKE IN MY LIFE!!! I just found this for the first time!!!! AMAZING. OMG !!!! I AM IN TEARS!!
a diva, without a doubt ❤❤❤
What a stunning voice! Rest in peace Ms Norman.
Un-be-lie-va-bly WONDERFUL❤️
Her warm voice masterfully delivered reaches out to your soul and moves me deeply - she was an exceptional person
A gift from the Lord Jesus is Jessye and her voice! I'm a classically trained vocalist and I am amazed by her talent!
Jesus had nothing to do with it.
@@Thinkwitthere's a real danger you'll only realise how wrong you are when it's too late to do anything about it.
@@jimtunn5034 Your evidence?
@@Thinkwit take pleasure in doing your own research. It's not hard to find
@@jimtunn5034 you mean read all that mythology? About a god? Which one? Ra, Odin, Zeus there are about 3000 to choose from. All created by men. Not a shred of evidence that any of them are real not a shred. Just irrational belief. I'm above that I use my human intellect.
R.I.P. Jessye. The world is missing you
No word can describe the great richness and beauty of this music and voice .
Jetzt sind wir wandermüde... R.I.P. Jessye.
Beautiful voice, beautiful songs.
👌 Wow 💐🌹❤
The most glorious singer of all time. She makes me want to cry she is so incredible.
Céleste....Divin....d'une beauté incomparable !!!!
Wow. 😮👏👏👏👏👏👏🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌😃Thank you for sharing this magnificent piece with us! I grew up hearing this very same voice, and music. Once I learned of jessye Norman, and this piece of music I've been so happy. This piece was featured on the opening credits of the 1991 film "Wild At Heart ". Staring Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern.
A film I've enjoyed watching on and off for a long time.
~Cheers! ✌💗💯
Прекрасно
What a heavenly voice!
A fantastic performance of a fantastic piece of music...
What a fantastic version of this great song.
Forever the greatest singer in the Opera world...how much I loved and will miss her.
Utterly amazing.
Sehr entspannte und ruhige Atmosphäre. Perfekt den Text umgesetzt.
Yes, it's truly great ... Magnificent music, and I'm very fond of Joseph von Eichendorff.
Absolutely wonderful! Jessye's rapt interpretation and vocal control are miraculous - intensely moving. For me, her 1982 recording of the 'Four Last Songs' with Masur and the Leipzig Gewandhaus is one of the great artistic achievements of the last century. Do you have the other three songs from this 1979 event?
Yes, it's very moving isn't it?

You can even download it yourself... long live The Radio télévision suisse!
Thanks Erwin - I'll check it out!
pianopera I was led to this sublime music by watching the Trip last night with Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan when it framed a poignant ending to to the series. I can't believe this has passed me by until now. I'm just floored by it
+paulprocopolis Thanks for that recommendation; superb! I do like Margaret from my pretty little country Wales too :)
+paulprocopolis totaly agree
Que interpretación mas maravillosa. Su fraseo, la manera de "declamar" cantando... Brava!!!!!!!!!!!!! Una delicadeza exquisita.
gorgeous, one of the best.
Beyond beautiful
Her death still haunts me. It’s pretty selfish to desire someone to stay on earth, just for our selfish reasons, but I will miss every lyric, every interpretation of her craft.
So glorious!
I remember her concerts for my SOCIEDAD DE CONCIERTOS DE BUENOS AIRES (!974/6).I´ll never forgot..!!!
Completely beautiful,moving goosebumps music.
I couldn't care less what year it's from or whether it's in mono, stereo ,quadrophonic.
This is 100% beautiful music.
Ar dheis de go raibh a anam dilis. If god exists then you are sitting at his right side. Rest you beautiful , sweet soul.
I tear up every single time
So powerful, can’t help the tears
Jessye Norman! Simplesmente maravilhosa! Inesquecível! Brava!
A gift to mankind.
So, this is the victoria hall that my father always mentioned! The acoustics are great that's what he read, and now I can hear it was really true, it sounds great! I would love to visit there one day....the performance is also very nice!
Actually this recording is very poor, mono sound in 1979?? However, yes the acoustics in the Victoria Hall are actually marvellous and for this reason Decca chose the venue for many of their finest recordings during the golden age of the Suisse Romande Orchestra and Ernest Ansermet.
Sublime 🙌😌
Love and miss this woman
The greatest operatic voice ever lived?
Fantastic!
I tried to listen to this and was interrupted, NOT ONCE, but TWICE by commercials!! Wtf UA-cam?!! What's wrong with you!?! One of the most famous black opera singers of all time, her phenomenal performance... And you CUT HER OFF WITH COMMERCIALS?? SERIOUSLY?! FIX IT! This is some serious BS when this incredible woman & her beautiful voice are interrupted by commercials!! Aaaagghhh!!! It's INFURIATING! Who does this?! A bunch of damn congenital miscreants running things at UA-cam? FIX IT! 😠
They make music via the Youtune Premium (no commercials) system.
The best! Thank you.
Wie kann man da Werbung dazwischen schieben 🤷🏽♂️😱
Exquisite.
MARAVILLOSA
RIP.
Devine
I think this performance is in the same class with E Schwarzkopf's recording with George Szell and dare I say even edged hers. Truly magnificent
I have chosen this great music for my welfare .
Bought that lp 3 times!
Sublime.
Dans la peine et la joie
Nous avons marché main dans la main ;
De cette errance nous nous reposons
Maintenant dans la campagne silencieuse.
Autour de nous les vallées descendent en pente,
Le ciel déjà s’assombrit ;
Seules deux alouettes s’élèvent,
Rêvant dans la brise parfumée.
Approche, laisse-les battre des ailes ;
Il va être l’heure de dormir ;
Viens, que nous ne nous égarions pas
Dans cette solitude.
Ô paix immense et sereine,
Si profonde à l’heure du soleil couchant!
Comme nous sommes las d’errer !
Serait-ce déjà la mort ?
Waw
Unvergeßlich und einmalig im Klang, in Diktion ....!!!
You cannot understand one syllable she sings.
well . i am german and i understand every word she sings. maybe you should go and check your ears, Mr. BOB SMITH!!!
Because your heart was broken a very long time ago, Mr Smith, that is why.
Could not ask for a more boring conductor than WS. Everyone knows it. The performance can't be saved by Norman's great artistry. Awfullly sluggish and listless from the orchestra.
Michael Doyle hahaha are you fucking high? What measure of heaven would please you then, sir?
