This is one of the best series of summaries on literary classics I've ever used. I have 16 classes who are reading different books and I use these to aid the students mainly with understanding the themes. I'm using this series and the one on To Kill a Mockingbird. Thank you, Prof. Over.
Thank you so much for this video! I read this my sophomore year of high school. But I am in college now and am having to read it again and this video made it easy for me to remember. Thank you!
why is the climax the destruction of the church? I thought it was Okonkwo killing the messenger and then realising that the clan wouldn't go to war, because it's when his character has the biggest (and practically only) development. Seeing as he is the main character, any turning point in his character should be the climax. The entire book lead up to him finally realising that he is powerless.
Read this book 10+ years ago for a HS class… the only thing I remembered was the father committing suicide at the end and the importance of yams. After hearing the summary, it makes me want to re-read the book
Betrayal 1. Nwoye abandoning his father and the Igbo society and covert to Christianity 2. Okonkwo killing Ikemefuna even though the boy calls him father and he is secretly fond of him 3. The clan’s response to the invasion of the white men with passivity rather than strength and they did not aggressively fighting back. Okonkwo sees the clan’s acceptance of the missionaries as a betrayal of the clan’s tradition and their warlike ancestors
Another point is his upbringing of hyper masculinity because of his clan’s perspective of his father whether correct or not through narrative of the clan or Christian settlers. Okonkwo didn’t want Ikemefuna because he didn’t want to show weakness to his son, henceforth the hyper masculinity but ultimately pushed his son to convert.
Sounds interesting because gives the different perspective on how new cultural influences both help and harm an existing culture. Colonialism brought many benefits to Africa but lead to many new challenges and a real loss of their culture. I don't blame them for seeing white men as locusts.
I think mindsets of people prefer looking an aidless things like music pornography politics and others leaving watching credible important things like this
I am now reading the book as well as processing information from the summary since this was supposed to be summer work which I did not get so I have 2 weeks to finish it I will try not to have a bad start on sophomore year 😁
