Nah, It's more complicated than that. Em was a white guy who was down and had the approval of the most "gangster" rappers in hip hop. Every white person that listened to gangster rap in the 90s suddenly had a champion, and he was dope. Not to mention he had the backing of one of the most powerful teams in the industry at that time. I still remember hearing his song on the radio the first time, the fact that he was white was a big deal. They played into this, and it was genius. Canibus never stood a chance against that, his beef with LL definitely didnt help his career as far as connections in the industry go. But Canibus went on to write argubably the most advanced lyrics the genre has ever seen.

Canibus was a "Pure" spitter. 1 of the best to ever bless a mic 🎤 but his problem was he couldn't make a HIT record. That was the difference with Em and Canibus.
Canibus and Em, at their peaks, were neck and neck lyrically. There's a reason people wanted to see them battle. Canibus didn't take off simply because people couldn't relate to his content. There was absolutely a lane for him, but it was in the Redman/ Def Squad lane. Everyone loved his bars, but his songs didn't connect with the majority of the people. Em however had an entire race behind him, content you had never really heard and he was backed by the culture. Nobody was beating that back then..
absolutely not true. From '98-2003 they were literally even in terms of bars. It's ok to be an Em fan, but let's be objective. For every Em "freestyle" (because that's what they called them back then) I can find a Canibus freestyle to match it.. and vice versa. EVERYONE who was a fan of BARS wanted to see them battle because they were that close in skill. This is just a fact
Didn't em and canibus trade shots 🤔. Not full on battle but they had lines for each other. I got no bias because I wasn't a heavy lyrical miracle guy. But I def knows lines were exchanged. It would have been dope, but LL situation kind derailed his momentum. He had a better diss, but LL had a machine behind him and LL indirectly kind of slowed canibus whole campaign down. The album being wack made it even worst smh 🤦
Lyrics and storytelling not the same thing, canibus had bars but he couldn’t paint a picture with words or tell a story like ‘‘em he wasn’t even close. Eminem’s songs were a movie canibus just had bars there is a huge difference
Eminem blew up before Canibus because he had substance that created his fan base. He spoke on things that his fans could relate to. Canibus was dope af and he could possibly body Em. But he didnt have that connection to the fans that Em had.
@@doncardi8699canibus didn’t have the streets lol … if anything he had a street lol. Canibus has never been universally liked…he’s championed amongst a certain type of rap fan … while Em had an entire race behind him plus other hip hop fans. Big diff
Exactly. The same could be said for The Game. Game is a great rapper but not necessarily a great songwriter on his own. I grew up listening to metal and progressive rock and didn't get into rap until well after high school and the same basic principle in regards to songwriting can be applied there as well. The common listener doesn't care if you can play a million notes or play some ridiculous poyrhythmic groove in some undiscovered time signature. That isn't going to sell albums, but what is is a simple, catchy, and memorable melody/hook that gets stuck in your head, and Em was the master of marrying technical lyrical skill with infectious hooks.

When it comes to lyrical rappers, it’s plenty out there. Some can layer story telling with the lyrics, Some can add crazy punchlines, Some got creative patterns and flows. And let’s not forget beats and production.
I remember back then around '99 Eminem was mainstream all over MTV with comical videos + Dre droppin Chronic 2001, Em was basically Pop music and the entire world paid him attention. Canibus was more underground spitter. But in '98 the anticipation for his album to drop amongst DMX Nore Big Pun Cam'ron etc was intense. But his debut was a bit of an anticlimax so when Eminem dropped around '99 Canibus weren't at that mainstream level and his next album 2000 B.C (100 Bars 🔥) dropped in 2000 only Hardcore Hip-Hop heads were paying him attention and he faded into the deep deep underground. Don't pretend we didn't see this in everyday life back then where white brothers had all the support & opportunity handed to him but the black brother with the same or better skills was not and left to fade & rot. White people lived on a different plateau back then, a different world. It's was like the Blind Side. When Black & White unite, major things take place.
There's alot of non black rappers out today repping gangs and using the n-word/ being culture vultures that need checkin. Em has earned his stripes in my opinion
eminem popped because his core empathized and connected with the vulnerability and honesty in his music - him being dead nice lyrically was just icing on the cake
Em was a dope mc who knew how to write music, Bis was just a dope mc. There's your difference on why one made it and the other didn't... simple as that.
The truth is this. Eminem had Dr. Dre’s co-sign. Period! I don’t care how dope of a lyricist Eminem was, if he didn’t have Dre backing him he would have been a white Ras Kass or Common Sense. That’s a fact! I don’t want to discount his lyrical genius but he had a machine behind him that the others just didn’t have in Jimmy Iovine and Dre. When you’re white in America the world is yours. The Beastie Boys had Def Jam and Run DMC in their corner and they became legendary too and outsold Run DMC! Regarding Canibus he destroyed his entire legacy by having Wyclef Jean produce his music alongside beefing with LL. That was career suicide. The music business is a tricky ride where timing and poor execution can destroy a promising career.
@@jman1562001 Dr. Dre heard the talent first, and then knew he could make MONEY off his color 2nd, and then realized he actually could make songs 3rd. The rest is history. Smart black dudes somehow people don’t wanna here, but when Marshall Mathers LP came out a couple months later, no one hesitated to listen to it. Redman had that crazy comical persona. Big did also. More people just gravitated towards Em. Sorry, dude was not revolutionary with the shock value stuff.
The hip-hop artists that blow up aren't necessarily the best emcees. They're the ones who know how to write songs that people like, not simply have the best bars. I love Travis Scott. Is he the greatest lyricist? No. But that's fine. Eminem is both a great lyricist and a great songwriter. That's why he's a superstar.
Canibus messed his album up by having like 4 or 5 of his legendary freestyle verses on it. Why he didnt succeed like Em, his album wasn't all that, he didnt have the versatility Em did, didnt change his voice, his mood, his flow, his delivery, aggression, cadence, NOTHING.
Let’s just say it. Both Canibus and Eminem were lyrical miracle. Em got a pass his entire career because he’s white. And Canibus got blackballed for doing what Eminem just got finished doing against somebody with more rank than LL.

Canibus was a "Pure" spitter. 1 of the best to ever bless a mic 🎤 but his problem was he couldn't make a HIT record. That was the difference with Em and Canibus.
its really that simple
Well said, Canibus was a lyrical monster, but he just wasn't a hit maker.
i just listen to his freestyles. them songs was ass
Canibus can’t write songs
Eminem wasn’t making hits either… Until he got with Dre.
There's more to being a great rapper than just being gifted lyricist...
Canibus was nowhere near em lyrically. I love him but he wasn't as witty with his bars. They were hard but they were predictable
absolutely not true.
@@blaackouut9844definitely true
Lyrics and storytelling not the same thing, canibus had bars but he couldn’t paint a picture with words or tell a story like ‘‘em he wasn’t even close. Eminem’s songs were a movie canibus just had bars there is a huge difference
Eminem blew up before Canibus because he had substance that created his fan base. He spoke on things that his fans could relate to. Canibus was dope af and he could possibly body Em. But he didnt have that connection to the fans that Em had.
Eminem dismantled canibus on multiple tracks lol. Christ
He had the streets. Thats the difference.

Only difference is that Eminem can actually write songs which was canibus biggest weakness
Canibus can write songs as well. Canibus songs have more depth and layers. It's just alot of people are not intelligent enough to appreciate it.

When it comes to lyrical rappers, it’s plenty out there.
Some can layer story telling with the lyrics,
Some can add crazy punchlines,
Some got creative patterns and flows.
Well said.
There's alot of non black rappers out today repping gangs and using the n-word/ being culture vultures that need checkin. Em has earned his stripes in my opinion
eminem popped because his core empathized and connected with the vulnerability and honesty in his music - him being dead nice lyrically was just icing on the cake
Eminem talked about bullshit, and still does. He blew up because druggy white kids liked a talented white boy talking about controversy.
Em was a dope mc who knew how to write music, Bis was just a dope mc.

No mainly lyrical dudes around that time ever blew up. Has Mos Def , Common, or any of the other lyricist lounge or dudes associated with Rawkus gone platinum, let alone gold? It’s a whole bunch of dudes other than Canibus. Em was the ONLY one to blow up, so that whole ‘these dudes can’t write good records’ was bs. People didn’t wanna hear lyrical black dudes. It’s just what it was. Some sold just enough and were respected enough to stay a float. Smart black dudes somehow people don’t wanna here, but when Marshall Mathers LP came out a couple months later, no one hesitated to listen to it. Zino aka zzzster is one funny dude without even trying, everyone knows someone like him with all the excuses in the world 🌎 it's never his fault either lol
I'm an eminem "stan" that does not respect benzino, but his almighty rso shit from the 80s and 90's something every hip hop fan should check out. I feel like nobody knows the old boston scene anymore
Canibus was hot as blue flame on the streets but his debut album destroyed his huge buzz.
it just wasn't what we were waiting for
Beats was garbage 😮
Mad respect for em but let's not act like whites don't blow each other up when one of theirs does something good that's apart of our culture. If em looked like Gza, would he be held so highly, legit question
Canibus was blackballed because he destroyed LL. They couldn't admit he got the better of him so they blackballed him instead. They silence dissent in hip-hop just like politics.
Bus came on here already and said why his career didn't blow
Canibus had Wyclef Eminem had Dre that was the difference
along with the fact that eminem could write songs and cannibus doesnt all he knows is battle rappin that dont translate to hits
☝And Keith Murray, people forget Keith (the "lyrical leprechaun, Matador of Metaphor") was next on deck, if jail didnt derail his momentum - he was 1 too
He said I WAS obsessed lol dudes still obsessed
Hip Hop is in the Army now!
Em ripped out his soul jeesh!
A real battle rapper can have that effect 😂
Em budgets were bigger & his production was better. Canibus is still nasty tho. A better battle would b sticky fingaz vs canibus!😮😮🤔💯👀
Em songs was never mainstream and was weird canibus was going in the same lane wit weird rhymes but he was black he can only do what the label push
Most a em songs was main stream..wat u talking bout..n he had music videos for most a dem
Canibus didn't rhyme weird. He rapped intellectually
@@IslandmonGanjamonNot at first clown

A shit load of Em’s songs were mainstream
Eminem knew how to make a song like Stan and had a persona that no one seen before, Canibus didn’t pretty simple concept as to why one blew up and the other didn’t
Redman had that crazy comical persona. Big did also. More people just gravitated towards Em. Sorry, dude was not revolutionary with the shock value stuff.
@@chadalahio8266 not talking the shock value rap I’m talking the persona slim shady it worked
@@chadalahio8266 True. Big L was doing that heavy violent, satanic shit way before Em was. The thing Em had was VERSATILITY!
Wow. Crazy stories
Math needs new topics. Should be on Shade45 the amount Em comes up.
Stg
Canibus messed his album up by having like 4 or 5 of his legendary freestyle verses on it. Why he didnt succeed like Em, his album wasn't all that, he didnt have the versatility Em did, didnt change his voice, his mood, his flow, his delivery, aggression, cadence, NOTHING.
Canibus is not a good song writer. Him and Wyclef didn’t work. Eminem was a good song writer. Em and Dre obviously worked.
Canibus was poppin for a few years tho and his first albums platinum
Eminem worshipper's will skip right past this
@@maestrogamersz2120for real dawg 😂
When this drop
Did you hear Canibus 1st album? It was below average. Slim Shady LP on the other hand....
this was good
CANIBUS > eminem .. ALL DAY .. EVERYDAY .. AND TWICE ON SUNDAY ..
Ouch. That's horrible
It's not horrible. Just an opinion.
EMINEM > canibus .. ALL DAY .. EVERYDAY .. AND TWICE ON TUESDAY ..
Where is Canibus? Lol where is Em stop being filled with hate
No one in Africa, Asia or Europe knows who tf that is 😂. Em tho...diff story
Can y’all please for the love of all humanity get someone who proof reads what they type before posting the title for the video
They say they didn't f*** with Canibus album. I thought it was dope.
It was because of all the hype they expected to be so much better but definitely is a good album
Let’s just say it. Both Canibus and Eminem were lyrical miracle. Em got a pass his entire career because he’s white. And Canibus got blackballed for doing what Eminem just got finished doing against somebody with more rank than LL.
Em didn’t start getting lyrical miracle until his 6th album…waaaay after he had already blown up
@@Kiki-xx3fj LOL. You were still listening up to his sixth album?
Obviously you were too or you never would have made that comment in the first place
@@Kiki-xx3fj Up to album six? I don’t think so. I lost faith in him on The Eminem Show. He’s been trash ever since.
Lol, whatever you say
