- Writing papers and giving talks are key skills for any researcher, but they arenΓÇÖt easy. In this pair of presentations, IΓÇÖll describe simple guidelines that I follow for writing papers and giving talks, which I think may be useful to you too. I donΓÇÖt have all the answersΓÇöfar from itΓÇöand I hope that the presentation will evolve into a discussion in which you share your own insights, rather than a lecture.

*My takeaways:*
1. The works that just have novelty is not enough in computer science, they must also be useful 2:13
2. Research paper is used to convey ideas 5:03
3. The speaker suggests PhD students do not rely on high-risk ideas that may be useful in 50 years 8:18
4. One idea per paper 9:30
5. Start to write early, and use the paper to guide what you should do in experiments, and to help your understanding 11:20
6. Start from a simple idea 13:35
7. The structure and content of a paper 16:08
- Abstract, title 18:00

"writing is a really good way of finding out what you are talking about..." - brilliant
I couldn’t agree more. And all the heavy lifting is done before you even begin seriously writing. It begins in the preparation work and brainstorming.
Here’s a fantastic intro to how to prepare for a great research paper: m.ua-cam.com/video/5z_iaQmdCBg/v-deo.html
6:27 "If you keep your brilliant ideas to yourself and you don't tell anybody, you might as well not have them."
During the last two nights that I've watched this lecture, I've had to pause the video to write paragraphs of my paper. There are so many nuggets of gold in this talk! Thank you Mr. Peyton Jones!!
I think the most precious thing is that you could be easily influenced by his enthusiasm, which always encourages me to open the Tex Studio...
Ideally it should be your idea that motivates you to write it but yeah I agree
For sure, I've just opened it 😂
He is a great teacher, thank you for making this available!
20 minutes into the video and this gentleman does not have shoes on. I love it.
A helpful talk. He broke down the writing process of a research paper into easy and executables steps. As a research student willing to publish papers, you should watch this at least once.

Guy is good, I didn't even notice he didn't have shoes till the end.
I'm a phd student currently drafting my first manuscript for publication to JACS and I feel overwhelmed and like it will never end. Thanks for the video.
4 months later: how did it turn out?
"Details section: 3 readers" - yes, one is you, another is your supervisor, and the other is the reviewer

Useful and informative...one idea one paper
This video is really helpful.
Really helpful ....
Useful video lecture
Very informative video.
I feel that "write the paper" in step 2 is too strong of a constraint. It could be - write down a plan for the project. "Write a paper" forces correctness onto the idea, whereas a plan is free to be incorrect and modified.
It's also fundamentally challenging to have claimed to have done the work before even starting the work (papers are typically written in such language). It is much more natural to declare a promise of the work.
The main objective behind the "model 2" is that the research should be well-motivated, well-defined, and there should be a concrete plan in place. This is just standard practice for good project management, told in a more confusing term of "write the paper".
Step 2 could instead be "write down a plan for your project".
Very nice Thank You...
very good lecture
Hello Sir, I think your structure can be matched to normal table of content of research. Can you kindly match between them by completing the list below?
0. Abstract - Abstract
1. Intro /Problem/Idea (Cure?) - Intro
2. Related works - Literature review?
3. Details- Methodology?
4. X- Results?
5. x- Discussion?
6. Conclusion - Conclusion
Thanks a lot.

E = MC^2 is a catchy title :-)
This speaker actually makes writing a research paper seem exciting! "The exercise of writing your paper will have made you a better person...Writing the paper is how you develop the idea in the first place." Excellent words. And if you are lost about how to STRUCTURE your research paper, check out our brief tutorial: ua-cam.com/video/aO6ipI-d2fw/v-deo.html

Use paper as a forcing function
Watching this as I am writing my first paper
You can any help. Pls Share your details.I Will Help You.
Im 14 min in and so far ive learned: write about it before you know about and do research later, and feel free to write about weedy, insignificant things - not important things. Sounds legit.... gonna go do my research paper now
Are the slides available somewhere?
