Thank you:)
"civilization would carry on much as usual if all of its theorems were to disappear,..."
If only the author had the foresight to know how number theory would be used for encryption algorithms when sending private data online.
I, for one, would like to express my gratitude towards number theory for allowing me to make online purchases with my credit card more secure.
The best introduction to number theory is The Higher Arithmetic: An Introduction to the Theory of Numbers by H Davenport read in conjunction with A Pathway Into Number Theory by R P Burn
I've got the Dover re-print!!! :) :) :)
Off topic but "Underwood Dudley" is such a cool name to have.
He also wrote "Mathematical Cranks" and other books about pseudomathematics.
Thanks Math Sorcerer, I've been waiting for this, I'm taking the Number Theory course in the coming fall and I need a book to study during the summer.
It's curious that Number Theory isn't considered a core course in a Mathematics curriculum.
Not that curious. If a class uses something from number theory, you can just introduce that result then. Most core or foundational graduate math classes do not require a full course in number theory to learn.
It's not even required for a masters or PhD. It really is of interest because of of computing.
@@user-dv8ym8ry9g That's surprising.
The first hundred or so pages of "Machinery's Handbook" is mathematics (mostly geometry & algebra), including the prime factors up to 1,000.
In many universities in my country, it is (Brazil).
I took an extremely advanced Algebra course, such that number theory was completely fundamental.
@@kayqueelson1761eu ia falar isso agr kkkkk
The "EU" letter combination is always pronounced "oy" in German. That's why SIgmund Freud is pronounced "Froyd" rather than "Frood" (unless you're Bill S. Preston, Esq. and/or Ted "Theodore" Logan).
Why are you using the inclusive or? Being Bill and being Ted seem to be mutually exclusive.
When I earned my degree in mathematics, Number Theory was a required course. In fact, we used this book. I loved this course.
That said, many of these concepts and topics find their introduction and use in other mathematical fields/courses, even if discretely.
I wish textbooks didn’t make “math stuff” sound so boring and dry. I think it turns people/students off. I now teach middle school math, and the hardest part is getting students to get over the “fear” of math or their boredom of it.
WOW ! That's an outstanding book. Many thanks for sharing 👍🏻
I majored in math (BS) I had to take a course in number theory I loved it.
"IT'S OYLER'S THEOREM!" 🤣🤣
Taking number theory this semester. 110% the most boring thing I've ever done in my degree so far. "A number is a number is a number." Can't wait to get it over with.
I feel so sorry for you. Number theory can be fascinating.
@@Steve_Stowers I feel sorry for you as well for trying to conjecture numbers without philosophy while claiming there’s a theory, without philosophy, and only utilizing higher arithmetic lmfao. “A number is a number is a number.” Come on, give me more than that if you want to claim “theory”. Boring subject.
I couldn't disagree more. I have just done my first course in number theory and thought it was really cool. Maybe it depends on how you were taught.
This was the book used in my introductory number theory course in college.
Fun fact: on page 6 of the second edition, there's a fun little math error where we find the GCD of 69 and 21 is 7.
I think the best introductionary book of number theory is Elementary number theory by David burton
~8:50 when books skip steps, some do, some don't, I just write to the side the missing step that made me stop reading and get stuck, if I can figure it out. This helps later, b/c when I read it again, I get stuck at the same place for the same reason. Side notes are HUGE sanity savers. Ppl who have better retention probably need fewer side notes, but I'm not one of those ppl. btw, that chart on the front, not on the newer copies sadly, is nice where it has all the prime numbers darkened to help w/ factorizations.
This is a good introductory book on number theory. I also recommend “Topics From the Theory of Numbers” by Emil Grosswald.
Thanks
On a frivolous note, it's the only number theory book that mentions sex: look in the index!
I'm in a number theory course right now using this textbook!
As a general rule, the last letter of a French word is not pronounced unless it is an accented vowel, so Fermat is pronounced Ferma.
Hello from Iran! I love number theory and I have started studying Maryam Mirzakhani number theory ... It is really cool! but sometimes lack of not having a teacher shows itself while the explanations are not clear enough but I usually handle it if I spend more time and think more...however it is good cause makes me think more! as she always said if we are patient we can enjoy math and understand its beauty! I think there is not the book you said in my country but I will try downloading its pdf and If it was cool I will print it! thanks a lot😄
Appreciate all you do Sorcerer.
I used this book as an undergrad back in the 70s. Oiler
Veri nice information
One of my friends puts his email in his books in case he leaves it some where. I took a course out of silverman and thought it was a very readable book.
Diphontine equations arise in process control, MPC..
The most readable Number Theory book is by Kuldeep Singh by far.
Yeah I saw a few chapters of that one online and his linear algebra book. Have you found a free pdf of this? I can’t find a free pdf?
Can you help me get better at math there for getting better at my job
❤❤❤
Hellow sir.greetings from Bangladesh. Im watching your vedios since 2020.can you please upload vedios from advanced engineering mathematics by erwin kreyszig
How do you learn writing proofs on your own without talking a course?
Can't wait to take number theory in the summer, hwuaah, spirals of the prime number sequences and concepts like direchlet's theorem, etc. Like to say direechley, jk.
Joe: So what did you major in college?
Math Major: Math
Joe: Oh you just be good with numbers!
Math Major: Actually, I never took a course in Number Theory.
Joe: 😮
That’s what I hate about most math books they don’t explain everything in great detail.
The way its titled makes it sound like it is where we should start learning Maths :).. im so confused
On the cover of the book 1 is marked as a prime number. What a shame, pretty low quality.
