Anyone who lives long enough understands how terrible the health care insurance system is. Nothing is clear. They do that on purpose. The affordable care act didn't fix the system but did make it better, Too many greedy CEOs out there. Want their bonuses.
I had Blue Cross/Blue Shield, and I was going to a clinic for infusion treatment. 3/4ths of the people there were covered under the same BCBS department I was, and they decided that the treatment was "not medically necessary" and just stopped paying. Suddenly I was responsible for about $7k of copqykents, when they had approved everything up to the point things were getting stuck in pending. Now, even though my insurance covers it, I have to sign a waiver every time I go in for necessary treatment (once a week) saying I will pay for it if my insurance decides to do the same thing. That happened to hundreds of other people who go to that clinic, too, and it wrecked me financially. The billing dude that they hired essentially harassed me, and I ended up wracking up thousands of dollars in debt paying basic bills, not being able to buy groceries, and in worse physical condition than I already was. Now. I am allergic to life, so this might be expected to some... but a lot of the people who were there only had the one health condition and they were just as screwed as me... or are just as screwed, really.

Insurance companies are incentivized to deny claims because claims means money. And at best, insurance companies just do their job to offset the cost of financial risk. I didn’t know this until recently, but insurance companies are actually regulated by the states. Like if they deny your claim, you can file a external review with your states department of insurance. And they actually keep track of how many claims they deny and if the company had enough money to pay out claims. If a company doesn’t pay out enough claims, or they don’t have enough money to pay claims, the company cannot do business anymore - they will get shut down. But each state difference in its laws and regulations. There are some federal laws too, but part of the reason why insurance is regulated by the states and not federal government is because different states have different types of risk. Like there are parts of the Big Island that overflow with lava. And some states have high risk of tornadoes and other have low ones. So regulation is good on state level, but then who knows how many states would change vs not. If change will happen, it should come from the federal government so all states have to follow it. I think that might be more feasible than universal healthcare at the moment because that is a big shift. But I don’t know if the fuddy-duddies in the federal government will act after maybe realizing how fed up citizens are. Ideally they would act to protect us but the big companies pay them. Anyway, even though a loss of live is sad, I cannot bring myself to hate him at all. I also have a similar story to his but with my younger sister. Eerily similar. I am from Germany, we have universal healthcare, but sometimes there a people without insurance and then it becomes very difficult for them. They have to pay out of their pocket.
