Actually, Nu Metal was formed way back in 93 with Korn. And a genre is different than style. There's a genre for Thrash Metal, but there are different styles to it per band. Megadeth and Anthrax gave it a hard rock spin, Slayer gave it a punk spin, and Metallica gave it a progressive spin, but ultimately it was still Thrash Metal because of the pacing and composition. Korn and Disturbed and Limp Bizkit have similar composition but they all have different takes on Nu Metal.
People sh*t on this album so much and I don't get why. Sure, it is very inconsistent on the style, but lyrically LB has never written a better set of songs.
Q Magazine are the only guys who had it right. No "Results May Vary" is not a great album, but it's a good album and while it showed us a different side of Limp Bizkit, but it still maintained that Limp Bizkit kick. Fuck the haters. At least it wasn't anything like Linkin Park's "A Thousand Suns"! Jesus H Christ. My ears are still bleeding after puncturing them with sharp pencils!
Talking about tangible themes does not make an album experimental at all. The only way ATS is experimental is how they pushed the envelope on ambient rage, which is a conflicting sound in the end. There is no balance whatsoever and it ends up being bland. But experimental pushes the boundaries of a particular subgenre, which is not at all what Linkin Park. What they did was pander to mainstream audiences and forgot that their band had levity to their spin on Nu Metal.
