Sounds fantastic! I can't believe that it took KTM this long to seriously look into the market demand and sales potential in US and specifically western US and Australia for this type of bike. I feel like all previous models, 950/990 included, were just platforms with potential but never purposely made for our type of riding. The 990's stock .48kgf forks springs, wide body with tiny pegs and the terrible placement of the radiator on top of the superheated oil reservoir were a screaming proof of this lack of R&D research and proper testing. I really hope that the overheating issue is gone on these bikes and I am stoked to hear that people like Quinn Cody were truly involved in the R&D efforts. Good job to all and looking forward to rip around the desert on one of these soon.
I have mine now for 1000 km with 700 km off-road and I com from a 1190 R but the 1090 R is a complete other bike and rides much easier off-road I love it
I found him a bit arrogant saying adv riding is quite a bit different in the US compared to Europe and that's why he was on the project. it just a case of a company growing and becoming more successful as they progress into the big adv market using their Paris Dakar wins and also from the motocross which they have dominated for years. As always the more info and money they have for R&D the better the bikes get.
After riding mine for several years, great bike, but I find it too heavy and hard to lift it back up on tougher terrains. I would need someone to ride behind me incase I get into trouble. Lifting points are too spread apart, handle grip to back to the bike. If I get separated, and I drop my bike, I'm hosed, at least until riding buddies come to the rescue.
Big bikes do have their challenges and there is no question that the 1090 is a little difficult to lift solo. But it is a great bike. Thank you for watching.
Wild One, IT CERTAINLY IS, mine finally arrived Friday and I am thinking WTF, or what was I thinking??? I am partaking in the BC ralley and will know what I have gotten myself into after that in the fall, Otherwise a 650 in the woods is probably a big bike.... had to react to your comment as I was flogging or slugging in the bush last evening..... getting to the bush, well that was cool.
What weight of rider are the Shocks and Springs rated for? 85kg rider? 90kg rider ? Im trying to evaluate that if you have to revalve them, then the 1190r might be the go?
Great review fro a rider who actually understands the real world limitations of these overweight and overpowered 'Adventure bikes'. Reading between the lines, this is the bike that KTM expect serious RTW guys to use, adequate power v middle age crisis brigade 160 BHP ego boosting and with a much better performance/ fuel range ratio. On several real world RTW situations I have been stranded in enough places to appreciate that an extra 50 miles or so of range is much more important than a totally irrelevant extra (and purely marketing led ) 35 BHP.
FYI : I spoke a KTM sales guy at the opening day of a renewed dealer two weeks ago, he confirmed it's possible to install a PDS shock on all recent adventures as the structural components did not change in between those models. And for the 1190r front forks, a stronger spring kit is available if needed.
It's pretty close. It delivers much better power and the suspension is better setup and more sophisticated. The 990 felt less top heavy though. The 890 is better offroad without question.
Thank you so much! I am dying to buy it do you know the release date on the East coast please? so i can bother my KTM dealer Thanks a million again really enjoyed this anticipated launch you guys rock, period.!
Awesome great review guys. You kept met on my seats edge. Listen it would be very interesting if you guys could do a 1000cc adventure bike shootout video. Thanks again
125 vs 150 HP, and the "torque is still about the same as the 1190". No, no it's not. It's good, but it's not the same. 1090: 125hp / 80tq 1190: 148hp / 92tq
Lifted_Above weight savings makes the difference in feel. I have rode both. 1090 especially if you guys the emissions crap is beast mode runs right with stock 1190. It's way more than you need off road and powers down interstate with no issues

Good to hear straight from Cody!
Thanks for sharing the information, one of the many videos I watched before purchasing mine. Really happy with it, fantastic bikes!
Glad you are loving it. They really are great bikes in a market full of really good bikes.
I hope to get one of these in the summer of 2018. Can't wait.
Sounds fantastic I cannot wait to take one for a test drive ... I have to buy one!

"more of this stuff and less of the road stuff." Hell yes!
on order cant wait
Nice bike, can't wait to get mine.

Interesting that Quinn didn't mention the 1090R is 2 kg lighter than the 990! (207 vs 209). KTM should play that up
XL Adventure Motorcycle Rider bingo
507 vs 509
207 vs 209 actually. My bad
still fat pig for off-road, don't cheat yourself.

Great review for an amazing Bike. Thank you.
Anybody know if the European version comes with the same spec suspension?
my dream bike.

Would a 1190R benefit from this 1090R rear PDS shock ? And is this compatible ?
We're not sure on this...

As good as 990 ADVR off road?

Should be in stock now, or by the end of this month
Still not in stock and no firm date

Thanks again
Thanks!!
In Sweden this bike is quite a bit cheaper than the Africa Twin.
Jon Söderqvist here in Australia its slightly more expensive
after I watch this I want even more ktm 500 exc...
Would a few more teeth in the back make this bike even more capable off-road? Just seems like so much power for the off-road I do in Colorado, USA.
207kg sounds great. I am on.
Daniel Verenchook 507 pounds when you can ride it
Funny Bike 👍
125 vs 150 HP, and the "torque is still about the same as the 1190". No, no it's not. It's good, but it's not the same.
1090:
125hp / 80tq
1190:
148hp / 92tq

That music needs to go. It's like dripping on my head.
Lifted_Above you're right it's absolutely terrible
Lifted_Above The music is cool.
Of all the things that 'music' could be called, it's not cool.
sorry, I have to stop watching now, I want a 1090 bad. I have been waiting since I saw it on KTMs site.
it is not a new engine..same motor as the 1050 with 30 hp more. Sick bike though..first choice!!
Danilo Perini Not true.
