Lots of crossings have detectors that can detect when the train isn't moving, and lift the gates. This crossing isn't one of those, but since the railroad is too cheap to install a proper crossing detector I think people should cut the drivers some slack.

I agree. If this crew were an example of what kind of company Norfolk Southern is,I would never use them to haul any of my freight. They just might be doing something wrong, dangerous or illegal and don't want it filmed. Train crews used to be really nice people. Not sure what turned this crew.

@Robert Dean Distance from the track is completely irrelevant. Their faces or names are irrelevant. He is in a public place. The people he's filming are clearly visible in or near that public place and not doing anything for which there would be an expectation of privacy. He can film whatever he wants in that situation.

Yeah, I stay back and never approach them. The guy closest to me didn't seem to mind but it was the guy way at the end of the train inside the customer property who didn't like it. Thanks for your comments Brian!
I like how you're being constantly reminded to be on the lookout for the thing that never actually happens. It's a total hypothetical, whereas real safety problems are ignored because fixing them costs money.
@J Navarro Yeah but terrorism has a specific definition and the things you're talking about are vandalism. Terrorism has to be politically motivated with a political goal to be called terrorism. If you never know who did something or why they did it, it cannot be terrorism, by definition. After 9/11 in the USA, the government paid some people to sit around and dream up stuff to warn the public about. That's where you got stories back then - very scary stories all over the news - to be on the lookout for things like beer coolers (because they might be bombs) and, in the case of trains, hobos (because they might be terrorists attempting to move around the country undetected). None of those things ever happened nor were they based on anything real. I think we can look back on such things today and see it as another sad chapter in the human story of irrational paranoia, like the satanic panic of the 1980's. On the other hand, you hear stories all the time of railroad workers being discouraged from reporting safety hazards - things that could get people killed - because the company doesn't want to spend money fixing things if they can avoid it.
Anyone could go out and photograph or record video surreptitiously. No need to advertise oneself with conspicuous video gear. Being suspicious of obvious photography is - as said in another comment - the same as the satanic panic of 40 years ago.
"I work in a Rail terminal and we're constantly being reminded to watch for unusual activities such as filming" Dear Railroads, You may have noticed that there are these people called "railfans". You might haven noticed them because, you know, there are a lot of them. _A lot._ They like taking photographs of your trains and making videos of your trains and this is completely normal. "Unusual", the word you use, is the exact opposite of "normal". If somebody is filming your trains, that is not an "unusual activity". That is a normal activity. Jeez.
The reason the gate didn't release is that they were up the spur, and they didn't bother to put one there. But yes, the gate runners are normal. Especially when the locomotive is at a full stop. Because as happened there it had to go full forward, take a switch, and then back up, which makes for a long time at the crossing. At least that was a low volume crossing.
It would be perfectly safe to jump the gate if 1) you can see that the train is stopped or moving away, and 2) there is no oncoming traffic at the other gate. That just leaves your willingness to risk a ticket.
I hope you were able to show the video to the cops which indicated that we you were on public property (hopefully, we'll see that in part 2). Then, file a formal complaint with NS for harassments.
Cool video work 👍 . Some people will find anything to complain about . Hoping to see part 2 , but it's all up to you if you decide to post it . Have an awesome day , JT !
As long as you don't interfere with their jobs or pose some kind of safety risk, I don't see why they'd get mad at you for filming them. As a truck driver, I've been filmed numerous times and it never bothered me. Anyone who gets mad must have something to hide, that's why they don't want to be filmed. Great work!!
Some people just don't appreciate being recorded. MOST people don't appreciate being recorded. It doesn't matter where you're standing when you're recording them.

@@BillBrasky7718 All I can say is that if I told someone to stop recording me, that would not be framed as a request. They can claim they have a right all day long, but they'd be doing it while their camera was recording the inside of their colon and they were taking their food through a straw. I don't see a problem in recording some train roaring by at 60mph, but the instant your recording becomes a distraction of any kind to people trying to do their jobs, then you have an ethical obligation to cease and desist.

Well done JT for not confronting the conductor. Hopefully someone form Norfolk Southern sees this and will remind their staff that filming from public land is not a problem. In fact hopefully they will use you video to inform the police of the cars and trucks that put their staff in danger by going around the crossing gates. Thanks for another good video.
Thank you for the videos Jaw Tooth. It is good to see Railfan videos from our local area. I come from a railroading family and have lost a lot of respect for the railroads and more than a few of their employees. In Butler County we have been having a problem with over length trains stopping and blocking major railroad crossings which presents a major dilemma for emergency vehicles. And train crews used to be friendly, waving to kids as they passed by. Now many of them are surely and as likely to flip the bird to kids as to wave back to them.
They need to upgrade that crossing detector. Newer ones go on train speed not just track location (I think you told us that?). That would have lifted the gates and the cars could have gone on. Blowing gates is a fools errand, but folks are mighty impatient these days and so we see what happens :) I am not sure why RR workers don't understand railfans. Seems to me they think it is invading their workspace which couldn't be farther from the truth! There are lots of us who love watching the short lines work - especially at a customer location. It might be that they think you are filming how long they hold the crossing closed and they are sensitive about it. Heck I enjoy this stuff! Thanks :)
I filmed this same crew in Franklin Ohio from the sidewalk and they called the police. The conductor stopped the train and walked over to my car to get the license number.
Caryl here. I couldn't resist making a few comments. My husband Bob is an engineer for the U.P. out of Los Angeles. He works a switch engine putting trains together. He always gets his trains out on time. He has a female trainmaster who gives him a load of crap at least twice a shift. Railroading is a man's world and women don't belong in it, especially in a supervisory position. They are insecure and always trying to prove themselves. They shouldn't be Engineers either. That's a man's job. This lady engineer needs to keep her mind on her job. She's more likely to make a mistake than a man. By the way, my husband doesn't mind railfans as long as they don't get in the way, because he's a railfan himself! Have fun!!
@@JawTooth your content is something else man. You give out detailed info and you don't just shoot a video of a random train and post it on UA-cam. . I appreciate your channel ❤️❤️❤️
If they are backing up to get a consist, why not open the gate, since they are not crossing the track? Maybe it doesnt need a gate anymore if they can stand there watching the train, they can stop traffic manually when they cross.
I think cutting the crossing really depends on a case to case basis. I definitely wouldn’t risk my safety to get past a mainline train going 60mph. But rightfully, people aren’t as concerned about a local. Because they don’t have time to wait for the train to change direction and switch out freight cars.
You're very respectful about the railroad property my Jaw! This is very sad that some bad people like thoses drivers and the crew who dislike great railfan like yourself! Stay safe jaw and continue to publish good stuff! :)
I’ve seen that video too on dual train tracks one train sitting and the gates go down for one passing on the other side of it. Right as the car crosses so does the other train at 50mph
This is straight from the National Highway Transportation Safety Board aka NHTSB. In every state, it’s illegal for you to go around a lowered crossing gate or to ignore signs or flashing lights posted at a railroad crossing. Trains always have the right-of-way, and for good reason: Trains can’t swerve, stop quickly, or change direction to avert collisions.
I've seen many unpatient people at crossings that have 2 tracks. A split second after only 1 train passes, they immedietaly cross over while the gates are still down for the last few seconds not expecting a second train to come. It's better to lose a few minutes in a life than to lose a life in a few minutes.
These switching moves can keep a street blocked for a really long time. Instead of running the gates, drivers could just turn around and look for a free crossing.
My grandfather worked for the railroad it’s called the Texas and Pacific Railway and he has seen a lot of people die at the crossings so my advice is stop and wait no matter how long the train takes to cross
You do good work, JT. Thanks for the videos. They remind me of times watching trains with my father. Years ago, I was watching a train crew working a small yard close to our house. Suddenly there were angry words in the cab and two men came boiling out engaging in fisticuffs. You never know what anxieties people harboring. So be a bit cautious, please.
Hey Bryan !!! Jason up there in the MI.. U/P has the same issue with the RR up there if you watch his videos !!! Guess they DON"T like Railfans ??? ""KEEP IT SAFE ""!!!
They've stopped and checked to make sure the way is clear and it's safe to cross. Why should they sit and wait all day because the railroad is too damn cheap to install equipment that works properly?
Thought I'd let you know about when I was in Bucyrus, OH several years ago. I was taking still pics of the Ohio Railroad Crane Co. Several cranes were sitting in plain sight when someone from the company came up to me on the other side of the fence telling me that I would have to give him my camera. I too was on a public sidewalk. I just told him to come and get it & then left
It never bothered me have people filming or taking pictures of us working. Hell... I'd do the same thing on my days off. As far as people running crossing gates...Well that's just plan stupid! Nice video JT.
Very COOL NORFOLK SOUTHERN EMD dropping off four tank cars! Don't worry about the mad people driving, cause the whole world has just about gone mad! AWESOME video JT!
I reported a malfunctioning gate to CSX. Saw the maintainer working on it, and he explained what had malfunctioned. Ive always been safe around trains and heavy equipment. Transported railroaders on NS and got to know them. Big respect for them, and they respected me becsuse I got them home safe. This crew could just be having a rough day. A nasty customer griping at them. A boss who took his bad day out on them. Dont let it bother you. Be safe, be courteous, and theyll get it.
Judging by the distance the train sat away from the Xing the first time you'd think the circuit would have sensed the inactivity and gone up. The real problem would be at a dual track Xing and not see an opposing train or misjudge their speed. The SD40 looks out of place on that track and even the Thiele tank car looks more at home at a paper mill (kaolin clay) RR crews can be finicky as some think you're a management snoop or the careless fan who gets too close and the crew also has to look out for them. Perhaps a cape with the JT emblem would put them at ease knowing theyre going into a quality film production
I love watching trains. My grandfather worked for the L&N Railroad. As child I got to ride on freight train from getting on the engine just before it entered the roundhouse til it got to a point 70 miles away where I could safety where I could safely get off and board another going back to where I came from. I had a ball doing it I didn't fear anything about it. Both engineers were friends. One was simi-family as he's was married to my aunt's husband sister. I got of the reason I am writing this. In my current town there is a rule passed by city 10 or more years ago that city streets could not be blocked more than 10 minutes. While that train when back in there the gate should have lifted to let cars go by until the train was ready to pull back over the roadway. Rev George Universalist
When they have a crew on the ground that can protect the intersection when needed and they plan on tying the intersection up for a while, it shouldn't be a problem for the motorists to cross so long as they can do it safely and not bang in to each other or endanger the workers. You'll be hard pressed to find a cop that would be writing tickets there, or a judge that would uphold the charge if you did.
You should save goodbye to them with your radio that way they know you were listening to them. You are doing nothing wrong. Keep filming, and we’ll keep watching!
A more accurate title would be: Patient Drivers Finally Go Around Railroad Crossing Gates After Unreasonable Delay, Crew Discusses Me Without Exhibiting Anger! Railroad Switching Spur
IMHO, the railway employees should be able to manually shut the gates off for a few mins. while the cars are being connected, or have a 3rd employee who can flag cars thru. It's good P.R. for the RR company.
Once the loco was in, there was really no need for the gates to still be down stopping traffic so kinda dont blame them. If the loco was coming out again quickly then it would have been different ...plenty of time to let traffic go by.
Those gate runners are idiots! The gates are down for a reason. Nice work as usual, Jaw Tooth. I don’t know why that crew was complaining, you kept a respectful distance.
I've been through this as well. I even had the local FBI field office contact me once. As long as you're on a public sidewalk, you're fine. Ignore them. Next time they try to get your license plate, open your trunk and leave it open. The plate will be facing the sky and they won't be able to see it.
That's why you always stand by someone else's car when filming lol. My first impression was that maybe they had an issue with the guy from the other day that they were talking about. I have seen people follow a train right on the tracks while filming. I would send the video to the main office and ask what you did wrong (nothing).
Don't send the video to main office and ask what you did wrong. It is completely legal to overtly film people who are in or clearly visible from a public space, so there is no need or benefit to retrospectively asking for permission to do it. All that can come from that is normalization of the idea that people need permission to film.
My comment was not meant to ask for permission as he did not need permission. Most companies take seriously how their employees act in public. He had no reason to approach Jawtooth as he did and they should be made aware of the fact it happened. I film BNSF trains all the time. They seem a much friendlier company. They always waive and if you respect a 25 foot distance from the centerline of the track. They leave you alone.
@@michaelpakadronermike8146 Ok but your OP said to “send the video to the main office and ask what you did wrong”. I have never seen a female engineer in my 52 years of life. Cool! Regarding the gate-runners, I am against doing that unless the driver is 100% sure there is no train approaching. That means coming to a full stop. In this case the driver would see it's only one track which helps. But they would have to be sure no train was coming on one of the spurs. I am not sure what a police officer might have done here. He might let it go, or he might issue a warning.
When it’s a single track in a siding and a very short train is stopped and completely visible it understandable that someone would go,around the gates although it’s illegal.
I've seen that near my work in Warren MI a lot, mainly it's people in a super hurry driving around the crossing gates, and that rail line is a busy one as well
Should have asked them to show the camera their union cards or other ID, to save the company time in sacking them for doing whatever it was they were feeling guilty about for doing wrong.

The guy complaining was way out of the picture inside the customer property coupling and uncoupling the cars. I didn't even get him on video until I filmed this crew in the next town when he came up to me and told me his dissatisfaction with me. lol. Then he called the cops on me and lied . @@JawTooth I don't work for NS, but don't let that 1 guy reflect the whole outfit. Of course, if you see a pattern among NS crews, that's a different kettle of fish...
All traffic must keep clear of the tracks and stop when the barriers go down and the signal bell is ringing and must not go until the barriers are lifted and signal bell has stopped ringing. You get 3 demerit points for weaving through signal barriers when they’re down.
I don't think their problem was with you, but with the other guy who had been there the other day. Apparently, he did something they didn't like, and thought you were him back again. Heck, if he has "issues of modesty," he could wear a Lady Speedo. I'm sure that would not alter the special & transformational reception they'd give him. People respond to Speedos. That's why they wear them at the Olympics.

I wish it was still like that. I wanted to film a long train going by the station but none came.
I sometimes feel like the car is going sideways real fast when I watch a train at a crossing. I think the tracks have moved so there are less crossings now. I liked to ride my bicycle to Armco and watch the glowing hot steel on flat cars at night. that was over 50 years ago.

I agree. If this crew were an example of what kind of company Norfolk Southern is,I would never use them to haul any of my freight. They just might be doing something wrong, dangerous or illegal and don't want it filmed. Train crews used to be really nice people. Not sure what turned this crew.

#1 PUBBLIC SIDEWALK #2 30 FOOT OR MORE FROM TRACK/ CROSSING = GOOD TO GO. You were not filming close enough to get faces or names. Ignore them
Thanks Robert!
Even if he filmed faces or names it’s not against the law.
@Robert Dean Distance from the track is completely irrelevant. Their faces or names are irrelevant. He is in a public place. The people he's filming are clearly visible in or near that public place and not doing anything for which there would be an expectation of privacy. He can film whatever he wants in that situation.
I work in a Rail terminal and we're constantly being reminded to watch for unusual activities such as filming do to the constant threat of terrorism, and yes I know JT is not a terrorist or could be they just don't like being filmed , those guys definitely didn't good video Jawtooth
Jeez.
Yes, ignore them Mr. Jaw Tooth! A lack of patience! Thanks for your report Mr. Jaw Tooth! Have nice Sunday! 😀👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks, you too!
Another great video! What's NS's problem with you taping from sidewalk off their property? Interesting, part#2 please!!!
Good question!
Wouldn't be NS, just that crew. I have never had such behavior from an NS crew in my life.
@@cp368productions2 Point well made!
Single track, obviously a switching operation, no train horn; Yeah, I'd run it too.

@@JawTooth Makes no sense. Bunch of grumpy RR guys that should find other work.
Have fun!!

If they are backing up to get a consist, why not open the gate, since they are not crossing the track? Maybe it doesnt need a gate anymore if they can stand there watching the train, they can stop traffic manually when they cross.
Maybe the conductor had a bench warrant for his arrest and was afraid he would be recognized when your video aired.
I think cutting the crossing really depends on a case to case basis. I definitely wouldn’t risk my safety to get past a mainline train going 60mph. But rightfully, people aren’t as concerned about a local. Because they don’t have time to wait for the train to change direction and switch out freight cars.

If the train was sitting still, I'd go around the gates myself.

I was way back also. I can't believe how they act. lol
They've stopped and checked to make sure the way is clear and it's safe to cross. Why should they sit and wait all day because the railroad is too damn cheap to install equipment that works properly?
Maybe you got the crew that Jason Aselin gets in upper Michigan

Love the switching videos, this was especially entertaining with the radio dialogue.....never say you as a RR felon! 😁

When they have a crew on the ground that can protect the intersection when needed and they plan on tying the intersection up for a while, it shouldn't be a problem for the motorists to cross so long as they can do it safely and not bang in to each other or endanger the workers.

I've been through this as well. I even had the local FBI field office contact me once. As long as you're on a public sidewalk, you're fine. Ignore them.
