How to Pick an Alternative Color Palette & Why

- In commercial art, clients often want to see more than one option to their visual marketing solutions. It's the artist's job to create them. Still, in our own work, it's a good idea to plan a color palette with alternate options to get the best results, have the piece "pop," and to satisfy our creative spirits.

Really cool to see your process! I found once i started digital I started exploring with more alt colors using separate layers. Exploring is always the most fun! I also like traditional because more happy accidents are likely to happen !
Thank you, STICKY Art. I can see how your own process would benefit greatly from the ability to digitally explore and try all kinds of things. Hope all is well! ~ Mark
That is really cool. A few years ago I gave my 300 dollar iPad to my son-in-law and daughter. He bought procreate and has written and illustrated two stories for his sons. He had them printed and bound locally. Now I am wishing I had one, but probably I would be clueless if I had one. So I will enjoy your digital art vicariously.
Thank you so much, Diane Thoroughman! My iPad was a good investment for me because I use it for such a variety of things. Funny, but all the technology they put into the camera and that's really the part I use the least, with the exception of capturing a photo of a drawing. But, with the collection of drawing apps I use (Sketchbook Ink, Procreate, Art Rage, etc), it's hard to get bored. Plus, music, video, audiobooks, etc. So much! I hope you are doing well! ~ Mark
Nice to see you back on UA-cam, Mark! I’ve been saving this video for a time when I could watch it without distraction and it was worth the wait!! I love painting with alternative colors, but I never thought of doing a quick trace or sketch and trying palettes out. It’s a great idea and much more helpful than simply swatching colors choose a palette.
I also never thought of using the digital option directly with a client but I can see many ways that that would be valuable. I’m so glad you shared these ideas, my Friend! Thanks!!
Thank you, Nan, and as always, I am grateful for your time watching and especially your feedback. I can be very lazy when going into a painting. I'm impatient and want immediate results, but that almost always ends up with mistakes or poor decision making. However, when I take time and breathe and little, and allow myself to make educated, thoughtful decisions, I'm always amazed at how much better the work comes out. Stay well and talk more soon! ~ M
Thanks for thinking outside the box😊
My box, as I'm sure you can relate, is pretty full so there's no where else to think _except_ outside it. LOL!! Thank you for the thoughts, QueenViolet8. I hope all is well!
Great video it reminds me not to be lazy, and plan my colours properly, so worth it in the long run. Love your style Mark👍🏾
Dodging laziness and procrastination is always a constant battle for me, Patricia Page, especially as I get older! But, I sincerely find that when I take the time to apply common sense and patience - with anything - the results are always 100% better than I expected. Thank you for checking this one out and especially for your kind feedback! Hoping you are well! ~ Mark _(ps. I hope you are being creative and, if ever possible, would love to see something new from you on your channel! A guy can wish, right? lol!)_
@@MDCampbell I paint and craft non stop, I think I lost the will to post.
Guilty if picking my colors on the fly, as you say, which is funny because I will often do a number of thumbnails and preliminary sketches to make sure everything is to my satisfaction in the layout. I am going to have to try this, it is indeed a useful tip! Thank you for sharing your experience with us!
I’m guilty too, especially when I have a short window to play around. But, usually I’m good about at least doing a swatch palette to the side, just for a reference. Thanks so much for your thoughtful feedback, Robin. Stay well!!
I would love to hang that piece on my wall. The alternative colors are so pretty. I love your art
Wow, that's such a wonderful compliment! I'm grateful you see my work with such positivity! Thank you, Emily Love!! :)
@@MDCampbell Awe. I absolutely love it. You’re very welcome 😊
Hi Mark, good to see you! Thanks for your Input, great as always. Have a great Easter time! 🌷🐣
Thank you so much, Sinja ja! I hope you are well and I thank you for your feedback and Easter wishes! Hoping you had a lovely weekend, as well! ~ Mark
Going to attempt these techniques as part of a SubStack article, lol.
It's like sunshine on a rainy day when you post a new video. 🌞 Haven't you considered posting shorts of your quick sketches? No editing, no music, no commentary, just the sped up video of a quick morning sketch?
That may be the nicest comment I've ever received, Moma B! Thank you so much! As for posting shorts, I don't do that here, but I do post fairly regularly on TikTok (mdcampbellart) where I try to blend a quick drawing, new music from aspiring musicians, and a positive or inspirational/motivational thought. It's a small channel right now, but it's been a fun experience working on an entirely new platform. Hoping you are well and indulging in your creative spirit!
@@MDCampbell I do not use tiktok but it seems I can watch them without extra registration! 😃🌞
I've learned a lot from you, watching your videos. Thank you for everything you share with us! 🤗
Thanks Mark for the wounderful video as usual.
Thank you so much, my friend. I am always grateful for your kind words! Hoping you are well! ~ Mark
Great video, thank you. 💜
Thank you so much, Jeanie Jean!
Interesting, thanks!
Thank you, too, Suzanne van Kampen!
Hey Mark, how has it been? Happy Easter. Thank you for your video. This is very inspirational and informative, appreciate the different approach
Good morning, Made by Dawn! All is well on this end and I hope the same goes for you! Happy Easter to you, as well! A little different this year with all the kids away at school. We're not planning anything big this year, so hopefully it will be both peaceful and reflective. I'm really happy you enjoyed this one! Thank you so much for taking your time to check it out. Stay well and enjoy your weekend! ~ Mark
Missed the name of the color book you showed. TY for info on color.
The book is called, "A Book of Colors" by Shigenobu Kobuyashi. I got mine in the mid-80s and it's been on my studio desk ever since.
@@MDCampbell I'll have to see if I can find it at a thriftbooks or goodwill. Looks like a great resource! TY
Procreate seems so cool. I use Sketchbook, but ohh how I want procreate with an iPad and an Apple Pencil
There are definitely a lot of good apps out there, but Procreate seems to be the current industry standard, though Adobe has brought their Creative Suite to the iPad and the apps are impressive. The iPad itself was pretty expensive, but I was able to trade in my old one which helped and I saved up for a year, putting $100 a month or so away until I was ready. I didn't buy lunch at work, so it forced me to be creative at home! lol!
@@MDCampbell That’s awesome! I definitely plan on getting one when I have the opportunity. Procreate does seem like a fun app to create on, from what I’ve seen in videos. I use to use an Adobe app before I downloaded Sketchbook, but then they stopped updating the one I was using and started fresco or whatever the new one is called. I never tried the new one
thanks , once again, mark, for a great video .. you forgot to take your coffee break!!!😳😳☕️☕️when i start a painting, i have it in my head , already , the basic palette that i want .. then , i wing it :-)) i think i don't have the patience , anymore, to plan it out too much lol i admit it freely and not even ashamed lolol this was great video , though, and i can totally see the value in planning it all out better, before committing .. thanks, mark!! norakag 😬😬
Thank you, my friend! I dropped the "coffee break" a while back after too many complaints from viewers. I understand people like to just get right to the point, so I made the decision it was a good idea to remove it. Of course, I may replace it with a clip of me dancing, instead! lol! Maybe not. As for planning, I know the habit of "winging it" because I do it often - but only when I have very limited time to paint. In fact, I did it just today where I just went with my gut during an exercise. It really shows, of course, when I take that time to really think about what colors are going to go where. A splash of orange on a cool background or a bit of blue on a dominant warm piece. Amazing how it makes a huge difference. I think, for me, it's all about discipline. Again, though... maybe not. lol! Thank you for checking this one out and I'm always grateful for your thoughts! ~ m
I liked the coffee break. Thought it was a an original touch. It was also cute 😊
I love your style but that green pickle tongue - creepy! 🤣
Thank you, Linda Smith! That is such a generous compliment! As for the pickled tongue... I assume you meant in the drawing and not mine. lol!! Stay well! ~ Mark
