At no point do the rebels actually look like they can win or make a dent, and when they do, they get absolutely smashed. The fleet is desperately holding on until the ground forces, who are outnumbered and outgunned, try their best to finish the mission. @@theenclave50 They're all to aware in writing and pacing that we know generally how the movie ends. But instead of dealing with the forgone conclusion that they will steal and deliver the plans no matter what by slowing down and developing the characters, they're violently propelled from action to action with no real actual or natural progression in relationships. Jyn goes from yelling at Cassian to quoting him passionately and Cassian goes from cold blooded killer to organizing a suicide squad for her because he chose not to kill the one person he was specifically ordered to kill, which was her father. And he had good reasons for not killing him, I'm sure Bor gullet was used, despite him making people go crazy, to learn the truth. Yet nothing comes of that truth gathering scene. When the X-Wings attacked Jyn's fathers position, we're told that they can't be called off because they're already committed. Nonsense. No shots were fired yet, and there's apparently instantaneous two way interstellar communications in Star Wars and with that squadron, so there's plenty of time to call them off. Even if there wasn't, there's nothing to prevent one of the X-Wings from hovering over the pad for a few seconds and sweeping the pad clear of enemies while his squad mates covered him. The end battle scenes went from "Cool visuals, I guess," to, "Seriously?" The inclusion of Red and Gold Leaders, obviously limited to what they could cull from cut angles meaning the almost the same exact lines from A New Hope was jarring. Then there's the out of place Mos Eisley jerks somehow being on Jedha, being jerks on Jedha because they have to cram some random cameo in the movie, just for them to leave Jedha immediately after being jerks and going straight to Tattoine, without freaking out over almost being killed by the Death Star. Pretty much everyone died in an explosion immediately after serving their one purpose in the movie, which was to flip a switch. And some of those switches were outside and exposed to the elements for no reason. And the antenna was out of alignment for no reason, and somehow transmitted to everyone yet just the rebel flagship, which had Leia's ship in it for some reason. And let's not forget that C-3PO and R2-D2 were in the Yavin hangar when everyone left yet on Leia's ship when it got boarded not much longer later. Also, the battle scenes was ridiculous. The rebels had the element of surprise, yet they didn't immediately start shooting everything on sight upon exiting lightspeed. There was no general plan and at most minimal coordination. Orders were given sporadically, instead of rapid fire. There was no shooting between the capital ships and minimal firing from the capital ships. There was no bombing or bombardment of the Imperial structure surrounding the shield opening. There were no squadrons of fighters firing volleys of torpedoes, just random fighters almost casually flying about and shooting at the occasional target. There were a total of 3 star destroyers in orbit around Scarif and yet not one deployed any troops to reinforce the surface. Instead, they just let the surface fend for itself and eventually Tarkin destroyed the Empire's own base, despite only some rebels being on the surface and despite the rebels already getting the plans. And fuck the rest of the data stored there, right? That's not important anymore for some reason. Vader's scene at the end was supposed to be orgasmicilly amazing, yet it's a let down. He dramatically took his time and turned off his life support and almost casually walked down the hall killing fools, instead of being mister badass sith and using the Force to brush everyone to the side and at least trying to Force grab the plans or using the Force to at least try stopping Leia's ship. Then he's standing in the vacuum of space like his suit is rated for that.

Fun lore fact: the voice on the intercom at Yavin 4 is Wedge, the reason he wasn't present during the actual attack on Scarif is because he wasn't cleared to fly an X-wing yet and was still undergoing the last part of his training
Yeah, but they are fine in letting Luke, someone they don't know, fly on the battle of Yavin, or Making, someone they never seen fight, Lando a general, and in charge of the fighters, on a modified freighter in the battle of Endor, which Wedge would of been their best pilot that was flying at that time. .

I don’t blame the writers that worked on 8, because they just made a gamble and lost. Tweak a few parts of the story, and 8 would be much better. Some experimental attempt at making a certain type of script, which failed. And then 9’s ending was decent, but the rest of the movie is not well written. "Attention all flight personnel, please report to your commanders immediately, you have been redirected to Scarif." I don't know why, but that intercom really makes you realize just how big an operation this is.
Remember that right before this, the Rebel Alliance was on the verge of dissolution. They all just learned the Empire has built a superweapon that has the capabilities of absolutely wiping out planets. Many of them had lost hope in ever beating the Empire. But then they heard that their fellow brothers and sisters-in-arms, defied both the Rebel command and the might of the Empire, launched a daring raid on a highly secure Imperial stronghold on Scarif for the slim chance of taking down the Death Star. In that moment, everyone remembered what they were fighting for, and what they were ready to die for; the chance to rid the galaxy of tyranny and to restore peace and justice. Everyone knew this was the all-in play; if they lost, there would be no chance to ever beat the Empire. But if they didn't fight, there was no chance of surviving either. We should all strive to live and die for a cause so noble. Obviously in the real world the lines are much more blurred and rarely would we ever see ourselves taking a side so vividly "good", but remember that if you don't stand for something, you'll fall to anything.
The Rebels were honestly pretty disorganized before the destruction of the first Death Star, with numerous groups acting on their own accord cuz nobody had a clear plan or path to victory. After the Death Star went kaboom, it basically told a lot of the leaders 'Hey, we did it. we've got a shot at victory!' and they were galvanized to work together.
@@atomic_wait No, a lot of people like that join up, and they don't have many skills, or whatever, but they are contributing to the rebellion, just like aged people fighting in Ukraine or wherever, putting whatever skills they have to use. Andor really brings this idea home, because not everyone had military or combat experience, or was a rich senator. Some were just average people with no specific skillsets. He might have just joined, and so not even had the time to gain any ranks. I actually think people like that are very brave and inspiring. Average people like that can turn the tide in wars. That is the whole point of this movie, and of the Andor series. It isn't about Jedi or Sith, or famous pilots, but regular people taking a stand.

Rogue One was the only Star Wars film in the Disney era where the two sides are actually competent. The Rebels understand when they have the opportunity to strike and they deploy incredibly fast while the Empire reacts quickly and its military acts as a professional fighting force. Compare that with the First Order, the Resistance as well as the Rebels and the Empire from the Rebels cartoon and it is a night and day difference.

@@Itisoverthere-rw Thrawn couldn't check because that entire Star Destroyer and all the data on it got blown up. But it suited him just fine because his divide-and-conquer approach worked out. Seeing this for the first time in the theatre is probably the closest I’ll ever get to feel to experiencing the original Star Wars in the theatre. When the rebel fleet showed up and showed out, I was speechless. Then to follow it up with Vader’s hallway scene? The best Star Wars movie ever made.
I love the scene of the pilots preparing to take off and getting refueled while command announces a general mobilization over the intercom and ends with “May the force be with you” absolute chills!
Of the Disney films, this one is by far the best. It connects the Prequels and Originals beautifully and adds more to the lore. It gives Episode IV clearer context and tells a gritty but inspiring story of how hope can burn down the evilest of Empires. And the seamless transition INTO Episode IV was well done. Seeing Red Leader and Gold Leader on screen, via unused takes from A New Hope and watching the Rebel Fleet in action was a stroke of genius as you began to feel how truly close this film was to the iconic film that started it all. I flipped out when I first saw them on screen in the theater as I knew exactly what the filmmakers were doing and loved it. I definitely felt like a kid again watching it, knowing full well that it was only leading up to IV. And the ending scene with Leia just sealed the deal. I have the deepest respect for this film and much gratitude for Gareth Edwards for putting together such a wonderful masterpiece. This is a guy who definitely knows his Star Wars, is a passionate fan, and actually knows how to put together a decent story under the banner of a galaxy far far away.
As a die-hard fan of classic Star Wars, this has always been my favorite film of the entire franchise. It perfectly recaptures the same energy and excitement of the Original Trilogy, while also giving it a modern, heavier twist. I'm always down to rewatch Rogue One, moreso than any other film in the franchise. It's just a darn good movie.
It's not just that it's the best. It's one of the best Star Wars movies period. It's also the only Disney movie that was any good and that makes it look even better by comparison.
I still go back to that game every once in a while. Sure it had its flaws but outside of X-Wing Alliance it's the only game that ever made me feel like i'm ACTUALLY a star wars pilot. So damn good.

@Phillip Scott I think that's your opinion but the fact that so many people love R1 and Mando has got to account for something; that it has good quality at least in some way.
@Phillip Scott Well people have done that too; every piece of media they've consumed goes into them thinking its a good, whereas you're the opposite. I don't think Mando is a phenomenal series but I get the hype. I do think objectively its a good quality show based on everything that goes into it and the feedback it follows.
Of course the Rogue One was always going to be better than the sequel trilogy. The beginning of the original trilogy made perfect sense, but it's ending made no sense whatsoever. The writers of Rogue One already had a perfect plot laid out for them before they even began writing, AND they had the freedom to make amazing characters who would all die. The writers of the sequel trilogy had so many bizarre constraints to work around that really held them back.
@Phillip Scott Do you think that A New Hope was really a great movie? It wasn't. It was just the first sci-fi film with half decent production value, but overall it was a very strange movie that somehow won our hearts.
@Phillip Scott definitely agree on that. I watched battle scenes on the show and the stormtroopers are hella dumb as fuck. I mean, just how much do we need to see your enemies incompetent and act cannon fodders? Script is subpar and the amount of references just to generate nostalgia is strong especially on the later episodes instead of explaining the reason for their involvement. It’s all fan service. Not that it’s a bad thing but the story sure needed more improvement.
After this movie and Andor, Mon Mothma has fast become one of my favourite SW characters. She may even take over Ezra as my favourite. I love her smirk when she hears the rebels fleet is gearing up for battle.
The Ghost being included was a dream come true for me, for this was the first Star Wars film to incorporate elements from a TV series. The shot of the X-wing leaving hyperspace followed by the Rebel fleet and the look of pure shock on the Imperial's faces was simply awe inspiring when I saw it in theaters. @@auralian1428 I'm not saying it was bad prior to Scarif, it's more that, well, something I covered in my other comment but which I'll copy/paste here. All throughout Rogue One the Rebel Alliance was acting all grim and gritty and making hard decisions and being morally gray and so forth and so on. And they were losing, badly, to the Empire. But Scarif they threw all that away and made the GOOD choice rather than the necessary one, threw out the gritty realities and acted like damn heroes for a change, and as a result, they won their first battle with the Empire despite having only a fraction of the resources, AND the direct result of Scarif was what by all rights should have been an impossible victory at Yavin.
1:15 is the most epic shot in Rogue One, with the Rebel Fleet jumping straight into the battle guns blazing, excellent visual effects, and a brilliant rework of the Resistance Fanfare from the original trilogy's score.
It may seem like nothing, but I absolutely adore the look on the officers' faces after the 00:26 "He's going to fight." It's like "Alright, let's fucking go then"
It must have been quite a shock for the imperial navy when the rebel battle force showed. The Empire has been dealing with guerilla warfare and insurgency and suddenly out the blue the rebels are about to fight a conventional battle with a sizable battle force. The moment that cruiser drops out of hyper space it's a declaration of galactic civil war.
Yes, but most of those ships are either obsolete or rusting clone wars surplus. Their main force gets routed quickly. The empire only had trouble taking down their fighters.

@@andymiller6661 How so??
@@andymiller6661 because this was an absolute love letter to the originals. The stormtroopers are deadly. At no point do the rebels actually look like they can win or make a dent, and when they do, they get absolutely smashed. The CGI was gorgeous, and the whole battle is a beautiful parallel to the final battle in ROTJ. The fleet is desperately holding on until the ground forces, who are outnumbered and outgunned, try their best to finish the mission. As well this films perfectly explains a massive plot hole in A New Hope perfectly, and seamlessly transitions into that same film without it feeling like blatant fan service. And not to mention the demonstration of the raw fear, hatred and power that is a prime Darth Vader on display. Completely underrated film that every true Star Wars fan should cherish. A love letter to the originals far too late.
And he had good reasons for not killing him, I'm sure
Bor gullet was used, despite him making people go crazy, to learn the truth.

I realize everyone is getting hyped about the Mandalorian recently, as they should, but Rogue One was also top quality, and at least partially made up for the misguided sequel trilogy.
This movie was trash. I actually started to fall asleep because it was so boring.
@@arandombard1197 I started to fall asleep reading your comment but I pressed through it
@@lookatthisstupidcomment5064 Cool comment bro.
Watching a fleet dropping out of hyperspace is one of the most coolest moments in cinema history ever! It worked great in ROTJ and Rogue One! The sequel trilogy was supposed to deliver fan service with iconic moments such as this yet there is not a single scene close to this in any of the newer movies...
@@DerpaTure9503 Sequels are too over the top. Po shooting down like 8 Tie Fighters in as many seconds? Like I'm watching a video game or something. Guy's not even a Jedi.
Ryan Hussain You can have your opinion, but I had more fun watching this than the sequels. Admittedly the beginning was slower, but by the third act it was just epic
Kind of ironic how the battle to get the Death Star plans was bigger and needed more ships then it took then to actually destroy the station.
More like because what was in episode IV was the leftover from this operation. The MC75 was destroyed by Darth Vader, only a few corvettes and Nebulon B frigates made it out of the fight, and they wouldn't be of any use against the Death Star. Blue squadron was destroyed leaving only Red and Gold.
@@alexsolosmexactly...the battle of Yavin happent just a few days after Scarif.. the alliance had taken quite some casualties in Scarif and most of the fleet that scaped Scarif scattered and had yet not reaorganized at Yavin and even if they had it was no use against the Death Star..they only had the remaining of Golf and Red squadrons to launch an attack
Never forget the heroes of Blue Squadron.
I just love how shocked the Imperials are, that THEY are being attacked.
Like a bully with a bloody nose. They have no idea why anyone would attack them lol
Rogue One and The Mandalorian is the best thing that has happened to Star Wars the past decade
This is a battle the rebells are fighting against the empire when it was on its peak of power, all hope lost in the face of the rumors about the death star, the feeling of commitment of the rebel fighters gives me goosebumps all the time. The fight for freedom and liberty against an enemy that outpowers you 1000:1 and has all the money to nuture his armies. This my friends is a battle that is someday going to take place on our planet, we are on the brink of a complete economic breakdown and takeover of the "emperor". May the force be with us and YOU!

When you realize Red and Gold Leader are in the older movies.
But not blue :(
Even the out-of-focus image quality when they were showing pilots in their cockpits matched the 1977 aesthetic. Someone was really paying attention to all of it during production.
